  2. Event Name: Gravel & Grape When: 4 May 2018 - 6 May 2018 Where: ATKV Goudini Spa (Worcester), Western Cape Category: MTB The fourth annual Gravel & Grape Extreme 3-day is taking place from 4-6 May 2018. Featuring some of the gnarliest singletrack in the country, the Gravel & Grape Extreme is an event that takes mountain biking back to it’s roots. With challenging technical riding, the Extreme is best suited for riders with a sense of adventure and a well-stocked arsenal of rock-hopping, berm-bending, switchback-sizzling talent. The distances, for day 1, 2 and 3 respectively, are 69km, 68km and 50km. The Gravel & Grape Mountain Bike Events are the ideal windows into the world of the Breedekloof Valley. Stunning views, bountiful wine farms, green valleys and abundant nature are the rewards for riding the Gravel & Grape. After riding, take the time to explore this stunning region. Participating in the Gravel & Grape is the best way to experience the valley and region; the riding is beautiful, unique and exciting. While the region is all that and more. By involving a number of wine farms into the race, each day offers something different, from the highest peaks to the lowest valley floors. As it is for the region’s famed chenin grapes, so it will be for the Gravel & Grape riders – on the lower regions of valley the soil is sandy with gigantic river pebbles, while higher up you find broken rock and sandstone. To help you through it all will be the expertly carved trail. This is an event that will test you, but will also provide warm hospitality and the opportunity to indulge in the regions award-winning wines after each day’s riding. The route has been crafted to reflect the rugged nature of the Slanghoek Valley, but also to show its gentler side. Stunning views, unique scenery, and three days of pure mountain biking will leave you gasping for more. The Gravel and Grape Extreme is also a showcase of the regions hearty country food, majestic mountains, vineyards and sparkling rivers. The hot springs of ATKV Goudini Spa, stunning Fynbos and hospitable people make this an event like few others. The Breedekloof Wine Valley is just one hour from Cape Town, and includes Rawsonville, Slanghoek, Goudini & Breerivier. The race is a clover leaf, with each day starting and ending at Goudini Spa, making your overnight experience one to remember. It is racing, riding and touring across this magnificent country. It is sharing a passion for mountain biking with those who love riding. From the creators of South Africa’s two favourite mountain bike stage races, the Berg & Bush and Sani2c, comes a ride set to capture the imagination of passionate mountain bikers across the country, if not the world. Starting in the south of Johannesburg and finishing nine days later at Scottburgh on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. Part race part adventure, the Old Mutual joBerg2c takes competitors through the country, from the heat and dust of the big city to the cool crisp air of the sea via spectacular mountainous passes. Using a community-driven formula along the way, the race will also uplift communities and give them a fool-proof way to raise money for their schools, churches and charities. Every organisation who works on the Old Mutual joBerg2c will be paid. From road crossings to watering points, it is a way for these communities to raise money and work together for fun. In Old Mutual we have found a sponsor that is committed to the vision of the event. It will not just be about media exposure, of which there will be plenty, it is about an association with a lifestyle and our sponsors being excited to be part of the event. Our aim is to provide a journey where the destination is less important than the experience along the way. Find out about Bike Hub's experience at last year's event here. Go to Event Page

  15. Event Name: To Hell & Back When: 18 November 2017 - 19 November 2017 Where: Die Hell, Western Cape Category: MTB CS Lewis said that ‘the road to hell is the gradual one – the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.’ In this case, the road to the Hell is a rocky dirt road with steep slopes, sharp switchbacks, ups and downs, dropping a hair raising 3000 feet down into a valley. This race proudly is the first MTB stage race in South Africa. The views while riding on these historic roads are extraordinary, jaw dropping and nail biting all in one. It is known as the longest mountain pass in South Africa. The overnight stop in The Hell means everybody stays together, which makes for a great atmosphere. The uniqueness of the race village is ‘captured’ within the shear remoteness of Gamkaskloof, no electricity, no cell reception, no TV, not even radio reception. It was in 1995 that the first To Hell and Back took place. It came about from the love of riding and to popularise The Hell. Due to limited accommodation and facilities in The Hell, only 500 participants are allowed. 21. Event Name: Pedal Power Association Memorial Ride When: 22 July 2017 Where: PWC Bike Park, 1A Libertas Road, Bryanston, Gauteng Category: Industry / General Cyclists are invited to attend a Memorial Ride on Saturday 22 July 2017 in Gauteng, hosted by the Pedal Power Association (PPA). The riders will pedal from Bryanston to Sandton where a letter voicing concerns regarding the safety of cyclists on the roads, the need for a law to protect cyclists in Gauteng through a minimum passing distance, and discontent with the lack of prosecution in respect of hit-and-run incidents involving cyclists, will be delivered to the MEC of Transport in Gauteng. The death of Cycle Lab Fourways club member, Greg Anderson, in a hit and run incident in Hazyview, recently left the cycling fraternity in shock. “Greg was a humble gentleman off the bike and a real racer on the bike. He lived to cycle and will be sorely missed by many,” says Andrew McLean, well-known cyclist from Cycle Lab Fourways. “The Pedal Power Association takes the safety of all cyclists on our roads very seriously. The organisation has invested millions in our safe cycling ‘Stay Wider of the Rider’ campaign in order to try and secure safer roads and better conditions for cyclists throughout South Africa,” says Robert Vogel, PPA CEO. “The bicycle is a legal form of transport. For many people the bicycle is their only affordable means of transport, while for others the bicycle provides a way to keep fit and healthy. We advocate tolerance and respect between all road users. Motorists are sheltered within their cars, but cyclists have no similar protection and are infinitely more vulnerable. We’d like to see that all cyclists - from sports cyclists to utility cyclists and kids riding to school - can safely use our roads.” The Memorial Ride will start at 07h45 from the PWC Bike Park, 1 A Libertas Street, Bryanston and is organised in conjunction with Cycle Lab Fourways. All road rules will apply during the Ride. Please wear a ‘Stay Wider of the Rider’ cycling jersey, should you have one. These will also be jerseys on sale on the day. The first 200 riders who arrive in the morning will get free coffee from Vida.
