Due to the success of last year’s routes we have decided to keep them as is. The event will start and finish on the same premises as where Robertson Winery will host all their Wacky Wine activities. So expect great food, live entertainment and, of course, awesome wines waiting just across the finish line! ROUTE DESCRIPTION: All the riders can look forward to a scenic ride through the vineyards over undulating hills in the Robertson Valley, giving you access to areas only available for this event. There is more than enough to challenge the riders on the two longest routes so be prepared! The 70 km route is for the serious riders that like a challenge. We’ve stuck with the 2017 route the included more climbs and more single tracks and we look forward to seeing the endurance riders tackle this one. It will be tough and technical with a total climb of about 1600m. Please do not attempt if you don’t do these distances on a regular basis. The 50 km route is a rewarding route for fit riders, as this route includes challenging and technical climbs and descents. This is also a brand new route and will have amazing scenery to enjoy! Only experienced riders should attempt this route. The 30 km route, on the other hand, is a pleasant ride through vineyards and over gentle hills and is not as technical as the longer routes but will provide a nice challenge for everyone. Expect a combination of jeep and single track sections on all three the longer routes. The 10 km route consists only of jeep tracks and is suitable for children and novices. NOTES: All four routes are opened exclusively for this event! This funride forms part of the Wacky Wine Weekend Festival in Robertson. 7. Event Name: PPA Memorial Ride When: 6 May 2017 Where: Greenpoint Urban Park parking area, Western Cape Category: Road “The law has to protect cyclists,” says PPA CEO, Robert Vogel. Hit-and-run incidents have become a common phenomenon in South Africa with few, if any, of the drivers being prosecuted, fined or jailed. In January 2017, the Pedal Power Association was shocked to hear about the tragic deaths of Daleen Boonzaaier and Greg Basson who both died in hit and run crashes in the Western Cape. “We are organising a memorial ride in Cape Town on Saturday 06 May in honour of cyclists killed and injured in crashes. We would also like to express our dissatisfaction with the current situation,” Vogel says. All cyclists in and around Cape Town are invited to join the protest ride. In 2013, a law was promulgated in the Western Cape which makes it compulsory for drivers to pass cyclists with a berth of at least 1m. “Families and friends of those who have been affected by hit and run crashes agree that there is a lack of interest on the side of the authorities to prosecute and proceed with these cases in court. Since the inception of the ‘one metre law’ in 2013, not a single driver has been prosecuted, which means that the law is not being policed,” explains Vogel. “This memorial ride is our way of expressing our immense frustration with the current situation,” says Vogel. “The safety of cyclists on our roads is of utmost importance. Since 2011, we have invested Millions in various safe cycling campaigns to secure safer roads and awareness for cyclists, and to advocate mutual tolerance and respect amongst road users,” says Vogel. The memorial ride will start at 08h00 from the Greenpoint Urban Park parking area. The ride will follow the various cycle paths along Somerset Road to Adderley Street and Government Avenue, where a letter stating PPA’s grievances will be delivered to representatives of the MEC of Transport, City of Cape Town and the SAPS. “We would, however, like to urge everyone attending the ride to write your own letter of grievance and bring it along to hand over,” Vogel says. “If you cannot attend the ride, ask a friend to bring your letter along. It’s time that the authorities hear from all of us.” There will be marshals to assist during the ride but no road closures and all cyclists participating in the memorial ride are expected to obey all traffic rules and wear helmets. Please wear your ‘Stay Wider of the Rider’ cycling jersey, should you have one. DETAILS AT A GLANCE Date: Saturday 06 May 2017 Start Venue: Greenpoint Urban Park parking area Start: Meet from 07h40 to depart at 08h00 Distance: Roughly 6 km one-way For more information, please visit www.pedalpower.org.za. 10. Event Name: The Night Harvest When: 24 February 2017 Where: Potato Trails, Hout Bay, Western Cape Category: Trials & Dirtjump THE NIGHT HARVEST Africa's biggest MTB & BMX dirt jump competition returns to Cape Town!!! The Night Harvest is back for it's 5th year and every year the news spreads overseas and more of the world's top riders flock to the Cape, making this the most fun and spectacular event of the year! The Night Harvest started as a locals only jam at one of the most beautiful set of jumps, Potato Trails in Hout Bay. Word of this unique event held at night with the trails lit up quickly spread and a few international riders made it out to see what the fuss was about. They enjoyed themselves so much that they brought more friends the next year. Since then every year the list of international riders grows and it has now become a full scale international event. Perfectly manicured dirt jumps surrounded by mountains with the best riders the world has to offer throwing down for your pleasure, with more of a jam and party vibe than a serious competition. This format makes it more relaxed for the riders, but that doesn't slow down the amplitude of spectacular stunts! The evening starts off with a warm up jam for everyone to get used to the trails, then moves on to the BMX & MTB runs. The top riders make it through to finals and that's where the boys reach into their bags to pull out their biggest tricks! That is followed by a best trick comp on the massive trick jump where riders get more air and can go even more crazy to try impress the judges with their wildest tricks. This year also sees the start of a new addition to the evening, the Spank SA Whip Champs, where riders can see who can throw their bike the most sideways and still manage to bring it back. This is one not to miss, so make sure to head to Potato Trails in Hout Bay for the madness on the 24th February! 24. Event Name: Land Rover West Rand Silverstar MTB Challenge When: 10 September 2016 Where: Silverstar Casino, Krugersdorp, Gauteng Category: MTB The 9th edition of the Land Rover West Rand Silverstar MTB Challenge takes place on 10 September this year, offering its traditional 20km and 40km options on the Krugersdorp Ridge. The event starts and finishes at the revamped Silverstar Casino and a special treat is in store for riders with the finish moving inside the square which boasts a host of new restaurants. The race finished in The Globe last year, which was well received in wet conditions. This year, weather permitting, the finish line will be in front of all the restaurants in the square, which will create a delightful atmosphere. Race director Darren Herbst has been hard at work on the trails for the past four months in an effort to present a delightful world-class off-road experience, which this year includes vast sections of unchartered trails within the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. The route offers participants spectacular 360 degree views as well as varied terrain and challenges, including the incredible floating bridge we built last year AND a new floater measuring 130 metres! The 40km route features 700 metres of climbing and the 20km 400 metres. The majority of climbing is dealt with in the first 3km as riders summit the ridge on the R28 tarred road, escorted by our long-standing supporters – the Mogale City Metro Police under the expert guidance of Chief Superintendant Bryan Murray. After the climb riders duck into various stretches of jeep track and single track. There are ample technical challenges on route but also enough fast sections which will allow riders to take in the views and the abundance of fauna and flora on top of the Ridge. The 20km ride does a shorter loop on the mountain with some of the more challenging technical bits taken out. For the finish all riders drop down the mountain on a ride-able jeep track, which also features a 100 metre palliated section to ensure ride-ability in the gorge above Silverstar Casino. This year our route builders have spent considerable effort working on the gorge and it’s a super cool decent, which pops out just above the Casino. There’s a little technical section to get riders onto the Silverstar Casino square where they will finish to the cheers of family and friends who wait in a relaxed European Street Cafe vibe. Our experienced ASG marshals will be on duty to ensure safe passage for participants and water points will be stocked with Coke, High 5, water, bananas, choc chip cookies and koeksisters to keep riders going throughout the morning.
