  1. Yes, the Records were fine planes, for a while until they outsourced manufacturing. I have an #8 Record which were abused by the previous owner. Used as a hammer and have a crack on one corner of the mouth.
  2. You can obviously buy US made Stanleys from eBay sellers in the US, but the shipping would be insane. So far I managed to get 2 US made Stanleys. But they are very scarce. I think it is because since around 1960 the suppliers in SA sourced new stock from England, and not the US. My biggest issue with the England made Stanleys are tolerances in manufacturing, and a poorly made frog. It also seems to me that the sole bends more easily when planing.
  3. It boggles the mind. It is like I heard from somebody where the wife asked the husband to paint all the kitchen cabinets white because she could not stand the wooden look and said they were not modern and also unhealthy after they moved into a new home. The cabinets were solid oak!
  4. Just rounded the blade. Thing about using the #5 is that the throat is more open than the #4 which is supposed to be a smoother. But I might open it a bit more as there were a few shavings that got stuck.
  5. Anybody got today's stage on Strava yet? My wife ditched her sister at 20kms. By then it took them 3 hours to get there. My wife was quite frustrated as her sister was walking almost every hill. And she is supposedly fit and not even close to overweight. I think she weighs about 58kgs. Thereafter my wife went it alone and took 3 hours to do the remaining 40kms.
  6. Here be the pics. Here I am trying my best to true a pine beam that is twisted like a corkscrew with the newly set up scrub plane. Here is a close up of the #5 converted to scrub plane, with lots of thick shavings. And with said beam put away and shavings cleaned to show where I am at now. I am running out of beams. So far 2 beams unsuitable for the top. I simply had to plane away too much to make them true. 2 still left that I can use. They seem fine and will only need minor planing. 5 beams laminated so far.
  7. I got a nice performance bonus and bought myself 2 LN chisels and 2 Dia-Sharp diamond sharpening plates this past week. My workshop is still on chaos though, but working on it. Rocket-Boy inspired me to finish my workbench. I need 2 2400 X 100 X 70 pine beams though to finish the top. Today I converted one of my Stanley Bailey #5 planes to a scrub plane. I will post pics once my wife returns with my phone. She and her sister is doing the Sanlam Invitational and needed a phone, since she broke her own which is in for repairs.
  8. I think I am going to leave the Lie-Nielsen Catalogue that I received from BPM Toolcraft somewhere where my wife can see it. As a hint. Maybe my wife will get the same idea as your wife.
  9. Nou maak jy my nog eers die bliksem in! My gran's anvil looks like that English one. It is BIG. And I know it has a nice bounce. I worked on the thing when I was a kid. My gran used the reclaim nails and wood from old shipping crates, and I had to hammer the nails straight again. He used to get the shipping crates from SAA Cargo where he worked for a while before he retired.
  10. Don't worry. I am still in the hunt for my grandpa's anvil. One big motherload of metal. My dad, for some obscure stupid reason, gave it to my sister's loser ex husband. Claimed that he did not know I was interested in it. I almost throttled my own dad. Now I am sitting here close to Cape Town, and the ex is somewhere north of the Vaal. God only knows where, because my sis don't want to talk to him.
  11. Jirre! People like you should be relieved of your Manly Card.
  12. And the stomach for the associated corruption when tenders were going to be awarded.
  13. Whatever that is, it is f_d up. My wife and her sister got seeded in A batch. Her sister never ever did a race longer than 30kms. BTW, can the riders ride solo if their partners can't make it? I see no rules at all on their site.
  14. We all said hurrah when he left the WP. I have no idea who would want him as coach. Maybe some club in his old 'hood.
  15. Not just the coach. There is mos a selection panel.
  16. Bok supporters are like some women in an abusive relationship. The keep going back thinking that he has mended his ways for the better.
  17. Lamb tjops only for well heeled people these days. My wife tells me they now R140/kg. And I can tell you it takes a lot to get her to bypass the lamb at the meat counter. She was born in Calvinia.
  18. I think by the end of the night the local Saffas there developed a sudden Irish accent.
  19. And there we have it. The 1 point loss to the ABs was just another outlier. The way we go now, we will not even go to the second round in our own WC in 2023. Our players are too big and slow for a game that has stepped up a notch or 2 on pace and strategy.
  20. My wife and her sister has an entry that they want to sell. The sister did not do her share of training. PM me if you are interested.
  21. My body starts cooking just looking at those pics.
  22. I hate storing and moving sheet goods. Edges always ends up getting a beating.
  23. Pity they are only bringing in the metric rules. I prefer to do my woodworking in Imperial.
  24. That shark's teeth got pulled a bit. In the end the Storm from the SW blew Nemo away.
  25. Besides, the guns in GTA and Battlefield looks much more real.
