Yeah, he is on the short side for 8-9 year old, about 125cm so 10-15cm shorter than SA average. I will go with 20 inch for now - don't want to scare him off with a BIG bike. 🙂 Thanks.

Thanks, looking for first bike for my 8 year old son. Don't want to spend too much since I will have to upgrade within 2 years. This seemed like a good brand but 4K seems too much for 10 year old bike. I will have a look at FB marketplace for modern brands then as resellers here seem to price secondhand ones rather high. I mean I understand they need to make profit but still.

Apologies to OP if this seems hijacking of the thread. Any opinions about Trek MT60 20-inch boys' mountain bike ? They seem to go above 3K on bikehub for secondhand ones but I can't seem to find new prices for comparison.

I agree 100%. You just politely say No and move on. No need to take it personally. It could be that they are taking chance that someone is emigrating and would be desperate.

Price is what buyer is willing to pay and what seller is willing to accept. Simple. If I do a google lens lookup, similar bike was sold for R3500 last year on bikehub. You would never know unless you put it up for sale. Good luck.

I am happy to buy from private sellers and compromise on aesthetics etc but private sellers also seem to take cue from shops & dealerships and keep similar price that dealerships have for 2nd hand bikes. Maybe it is just a question of time to find right price & seller. 🙂

True however second hand market here seems dominated by shops (and not private sellers) and prices are just about 10-20% less than new ones. I suppose these shops can afford to keep these prices high for a long time.

I am not OP but second hand market seems to be dominated mainly by shops and prices are not too far off new prices. Hardly any private sellers. I put up my son's bike for almost 1/4th of price I paid so it is confusing as to how these shops keep up the prices so high.

Oh wow, he is quite tall for his age. My son is 8 but about 125cm. Would you reckon 20cm for that height is ok ? Sorry for hijacking your thread but google search gives many opinions. TIA.
