  1. As a rule I do not buy flies, I bind them. Bought a few Tigerfish flies when we visited Cahorra Bassa. My eyes are not that good anymore. I bought a desk lamp with a magnifying glass over the weekend and those #20 hooks will be within reach again.
  2. Think I told you this. I had a yellow strike indicator on with a klinkhammer on the front. They slammed the yellow strike indicator and left the white klinkhammer. I went home and returned the next day hammering the yellows with the yellow Klink. A day steeped in history....... that was the day I struggled a lot on a very rocky bottom in a fast flowing stream. That was also the day I decided to start cycling to make my legs stronger!!!!!!!!!!!
  3. Also here..... http://www.strikeindicator.com/
  4. You guys will like this one....... Strike indicators are always problematic. THIS ONE IS THE ANSWER........ I made my own by stealing a thick yarning needle out of EM's toolbox. Doctored it with the Dremel and used some Scooby Doo tubing. Worx like a dream!!!!! http://vimeo.com/63412360
  5. Yup, the hair from my own Brindle Boerboel was awesome. He is old now and lives in Wellinton in the Cape Colony with my son, but if he sees me with scissors he runs!!!!! Roadkill also makes for interesting feathers. I have korhaan, troupant and many other in my collection. Rooijakkals, haas en bakoor jakkals werk ook goed. Moet net vars roadkill wees wat ek met stoom ontsmet.
  6. I always do the right thing, turn rocks at the water edge over, identify insects, size, colour etc, wash my hands thoroughly with the river water to take my scent away and then choose my flies accordingly. I have a very nifty book at home that identifies most aquatics you find in streams. It is a DOW publication. I have become a little rusty over time but the book is packed. Also helps when tying flies as all are colour pics. It helps you when blending dubbing. Being colour blind help a lot as I can match the colours very accurately. Years ago I sent an email to Scintilla Lace in America. They sent me a massive parcel of ALL the dubbing material they had at that stage, from little Ziploc packets to samples stuck on cardboard. I still use that dubbing today. We recently bought a Bobble Off machine that "shaves" the bobbles off your jerseys, the best dubbing ever "fo free"!!!!!! I also spin my dubbing using silk or copper wire using a little jig I made myself with a beeswax mix I made myself. I love making little thingies used for fly-tying myself. I have a dubbing needle made with a piece of copper round bar with the needle made of a bicycle spoke. I have a dubbing spinning weight with the hooks made from bicycle spokes. I have a set of hair stackers made with the doppies of different calibres of bullet casings. I do have a little metal lathe that makes these things easier to make yourself.
  7. Yes it was, taken on a Mrs Simpson tied on a no 18 hook. I had it mounted but the fish disappeared before it was delivered.
  8. My largest yellow that did not bust me measured 850mm before I released it. It gave me a look and I could swear it said "F..k You" before it disappeared in a swirl of water.
  9. Yellow taken on a San Juan Worm and a Golden take in a dam. San Juan and a Green Eyed Damsel is my most productive Yellowfish flies.
  10. Saturday we leave for Aliwal North, Lady Grey is ONLY 45 km away. Karingmelk Spruit, Kraai River, Barkley East ....... ALL AN EASY DRIVE.......... YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11. My very first yellow taken from a Southern Free State stream and a Brown from a dam near Bronkhorstspruit
  12. I have used this on occasion. Not sure if it will strip coatings off fancy pansy lenses. http://www.swissvax...._Code=SE1032490 Also wear a bandanna or sweatband. I hand my glasses to my stoker to clean, she sits back there doing nothing in any case.
  13. Woolly Bugger is so een. Ek ken 'n paar woolly buggers wat ek baie graag op 'n tippet sou wou sit met bakstene aan hulle enkels om hulle te laat sink!!!!!!!!
  14. Ja swaer, jy weet nooit of jy 'n gele met twee koppe of twee sterte gaan vang nie en of dit 'n muddy of 'n turdie is nie!!!!!!!!
  16. We went to a farm dam east of Witbank. You go to the inlet where they are feeding. I used a black tungsten beadhead nymph with some gold tinsel in the body. You attach the fly with a piece of fluorocarbon 1,5 time longer than your rod. You absolutely stealth to the river or dam bank and with outstretched hand lower the fly into the feeding target fish's periphery. This all without splashing or heavy footfalls. If you see the fish turn it is too late. You do not feel the carp take and quickly get the hang of it. When you are on it is the freshwater equivalent of a bonefish. Brutal and very light touch on the drag and patience........ BUR MOEROFVA FUN????????
  17. Cannot wait to relocate to Aliwal North, Lady Grey net oor die bult. Also want to drift the Kraai. My fly tying kit and box of material was the first stuffies I packed.
  18. Net soos fietsry, dit is net die begin. As die gogga byt kos dit net geld........ LEKKER,!!!!!
  19. Carp fly fishing is absolute stealth fishing. I landed 11 in one day with a the largest a six kg monster. Used a seven wt rod. It is great fun.
  20. Then buy her a book to read while you fish.
