  1. It was a good one...are you the man in 10th position in the 50km. I was 10th in the 34. At least the weather held quite well. Any idea where the photos can be purchased? Cant get hold of the photographer
  2. Thanks very much. Sorry, I have registed and paid. What I meant was the collection of numbers, etc and the start of the race.
  3. I think I have missed something, but where are the start times, etc? Do we register on arrival?
  4. I am doing this one. My first event longer than 35km...looking forward to it.

    2012 94.7

This is my first 94.7 and I am doing it on a MTB (which is probably not ideal) and was wondering whether I should be using road tyres. Any advice in this regard....please?

    Breaking Spokes

Minion, what you say makes sense. I havent had the misfortune of the chain falling off the large sprocket, as mentioned by Mojoman. Maybe I spend too much time on the smaller ones (read "Granny Gears" ) Must say, the bike has been good at keeping the chain on the sprockets. Scotty, I havent been to Bike Scene with this issue.

    Breaking Spokes

Thanks all, for the input. Looks like this is going to cost some money. I will look into these options. @Mojoman - I honestly cant tell you which side. I will check this in future. What is the relevance, as I am not technically inclined? I would be interested to know. @ Scotty - They are the OEM rims that come with the GT, but I dont know the brand.
  8. I have been riding my GT Avalanche MTB for about a year. In the last three months, I have broken and replaced 3 spokes. They seem to be breaking at the bend where it is joined to the hub. I am a large person at 1.92 m and 122kg. I thought that this might be the problem, but why are they only breaking now? Should I get new wheels or keep re-spoking (if thats the correct term)? Any advice would be appreciated.
  9. On any tyre, don't exceed the maximum pressure and load, as recommended on the sidewall of the tyre. Lots said about the damage caused by low pressure, but too hard and you increase the risk of an impact fracture. My entry level GT has tubes, but its no coincidence that that most vehicles sold today are fitted with tubeless tyres....
  10. Just learned something new regarding that "Freeway" sign...thanks LeTurbo. Always assumed that it was just there on all dual carriageways. I regularly see cyclists on the N17 out on my side of town! Call me a "Weiner", but I tend to follow the law...just makes life a little less stressful. Take the mystery out of it. I want to enjoy the ride, not be looking out for cars with blur lights. Thats why I have a motorcycle licence. I can ride without worrying about cops. Different strokes for different folks. If other okes want to do things differently, go for it, just dont interfere with my life. Unfortunately, three years ago, new years day, a stupid, liberated couple let their unlicenced son take the videos back, just quickly, in Dads car. He wrote off my wifes car, with her and my two-year old son in it... Being law abiding citizens, my wife was wearing a seat belt and my son was strapped into his seat. Both OK, but we lost R70k on the new car. It could have been a lot worse. The "law does not apply to me" is fine, unless it effects somebody else!!!
  11. Thanks. I will check them out. Of course I use...Garmin Training Center at the moment
  12. Without wanting to hi-jack the thread, which of these programmes is the must useful?
  13. You make a good point, but being in sales myself, I believe that it is my job to introduce myself to a client. He is, after all, paying my salary
  14. Why do dealers have a book to write your details down if they never phone back? I am bigger than the average person, at 1,9m tall. I went to 7 different dealers, looking cycling kit. Five of them wrote my details down....not one phoned me back. I eventually went to the Anatomic factory shop and bought my kit there. This proves that two phone calls could have made the sale...but they didnt bother. I understand that they keep the more popular sizes, but at least you could order bigger sizes if required. One well know shop I went into, I scratched around for 15 minutes...no-one offered to help. I walked out. The other one, the owner, who is well known, lost interest once he realised he didnt have stock. He said he would try and source, then his mate walked in and they started chatting. I eventually walked out. This shopping experience is not limited to clothing either...It seems like they are only interested if you are buying a big ticket item, like a bicycle. I will vote with my feet. As Peter Cheales said..."I was your customer"
  15. Thanks for the welcome. I are in Springs...kidding. Grew up in KZN, so no accent. I do, however, really enjoy living the East Rand. Good people.
  16. This is my first post here...couldnt find anywhere else to post an introductory mail, like some forums require. I bought a GT MTB about a month ago. Does anyone know of any safe rides out in the far East Rand? I would also like some advice from the boffins on the MTB races. What races are good to aim for in the beginners side, like myself? I am sure that there are certain races which are more geared for the newer riders, or are not so technical as to frighten the living daylights out of a newbie! Any guidance would be appreciated.
