  1. Did the 2 day event on the weekend and really enjoyed it despite the first day really getting the better of me. I had been sick for a full week with gastro leading up to the race and at about 35km (round about the bottom of Spionkop) the cramping began! This made for a very painful walk up the hill followed by a somewhat hairy decent as my wobbly legs did not instill much confidence down the side of the mountain. This resulted in a very slow, long and painful day for me but some lessons learnt. Day 2 was far more fun - I started slowly and let my partner ride ahead which took the pressure off, all in all a very cool day out, loved it. Accomodation in the race village was not bad (a tent is a tent) but one thing begs a question. If you know you snore like a mating lion why do you stay in a tented race village and torture all other riders out of a good night's sleep!?! This is directed to the gent a few tents down. Bricks and morter for me next year I'm afraid! The hospitality was otherwise great, women were really catered for as we had nice hot showers and flushing loos - thank you!! The men roughed it a bit more. The food was great and the beer was cold! The water points were incredible and the spirit of the locals lifted me when I was really suffering on day 1. Funniest moment for me was riding past some local kids and telling them I am sooo tired to which they all started shouting in unison: "shame, ah shame, shame!" - I laughed to a fellow rider "at least the local 5yr olds feel sorry for me, lol!"... Really an amazing race! Next year I will be make sure I am better prepared so I can enjoy it more. Weekend warrior with one or two spinning classes thrown in doesnt really suffice
  2. Beer in my camelbak - now that would be a novel riding experiment. I hear there are lots of electorlytes in beer
  3. So its a BYOW party this weekend? Will be carrying bottled water in my camelbak methinks.
  4. Lol!!! Nope, now I'm going to keep my identity top secret
  5. Well done guys! My turn this weekend. Only issue is I've been down with gastro since friday so couldn't ride this whole weekend. Got some antibiotics today, doc reckons I'll be fine by weekend. Do u think rest and weight loss will be as helpful as a ride this weekend anyway can only do my best, am still excited!
  6. PS. a ride would be good - my bf needs some more challenging riding partners and I need to find a girl or slower guy to ride with so let me know if you have any more ppl round the dam who might be keen.
  7. We're in Westlake so on VG doorstep. We used to also ride around Redstone and that side but not sure you can ride there anymore, seems closed off now?
  8. GU berry powder (electrolytes for training) and GU Carbohydrate Tropical Fruit for racing - very mild flavour, not that sweet at all and doesnt change flavour. Not sure if its hardcore enough for you riders though but suits me fine as a weekend warrior and middle of the field rider. Also freeze the inside of your camelback and water bottle tops to avoid bacteria and mould build up between rides. Works like a charm.
  9. Seems like it but in my case it might not be a bad thing!
  10. Oh no! oh well - I am pretty sure we'll catch you on VG some time. We have an unsellable house at harties so go there every weekend just about...its my training camp.
  11. PS - not the decent, the original 2 day
  12. The 2 day...this is my first stage race....btw riding van gaalens this weekend for a last ride. Going to do concrete road, then into farms (so turn right at bottom not left), then pompheis, oem piets and greek church - reckon thats about 60km?
  13. If you want to be safe the PWC MTB Park - they open at sunrise as far as I am aware. Have only ever done trail runs there so not sure what the cycling is like but probably better than a spinning class. Else the spruit.
  14. Thanks - managed to download it on my blackberry eventually! The Strachmeisters...we are newbies, so G for us...G for good times I guess.
