  1. Thanks guys... I personally like the Conti Race King's...but then again I have not ridden everything. Whats the deal using a non USt on a tubless setup? The tudeless seem heavier but why use a "beaded" tyre as a tubeless? Don't you have to use UST on a tubeless ready setup?
  2. Hey Guys, Well I have got all the bits for my Scalpel and putting it together... What I need still is a set of tyres. I used to ride Crossmark UST and they are good. I want a good race tyre thats light but does not puncture whenever it gets rough...yes I knoe there is a pay off between weight and durability. What are the Mitchelin tyres like? I have DT X400 Tubless ready rims with ust kit, do I ride only UST's? 2.0 or 2.20???(Will be going to MAvic SLR soon) What are the pro's and cons for: Crossmark/Monorail LUST Race King/Mountain King UST 2.0...or 2.20 Schwalbe Mitchelin Wild Race'R Advanced or regular I want a low rolling resistant tyre, light as possible without puncturing all the time, I ride hardpack or lose over hardpack mostly and I weigh 65kg's so I am light.
  3. After reading my last post I realise I was a bit stupid... The BB30 takes a 30mm axel right, the FSA has a 24mm axel...????
  4. Please excuse my Tech inexperience but don'tall the cranksets have the same diameter "axel"??? ie... whats the difference in BB's, can"t I put a BB30 Bottom Bracket in and use the FSA's?
  5. Hi Guys, I have a 2010 Cannondale Carbon Ultimate with a BB30 size frame. I have just purchased an FSA K-Force Light triple blade 3x9 Carbon Crankset and need advice on what BB/BB30 or BB adaptors I need to get them in (there is no BB in the frame or on the cranks). I don't want to run a regular BB if I can run a BB30 and have nothing protruding outside of the BB area of the fame... Any advice will be appreciated... Callum
  6. Totally Agree Ctp!!! I am thinking of just trying to stick to XT or X9/XO mix...but spend on the wheels. Edge Design has a 3x9 XT groupset new for R4500, maybe thats even a plan for now, can always upgrade that at a later date as I need... The new XT brakes are just like XTR too and light... I didn't get the 2012 pedals they the old trusty XT M770
  7. Bought my first item for the Scalpel!!! XT M770 Pedals, new "used" for a bargain.... next is the lefty and wheels!!
  8. Thanks again guys...soon as I get the frame I will post pics but nothing to show for it yet!! So far I'm 99 % sure I'll go X9/XO mix (maybe OX twist when it comes) and for wheels ZTR Alpines on a lefty hub and a Hope...I think? Race Kings for rubber... The biggest choice is brakes...looked at Formula R1's...yummy!! And not much more than XO brakes (R4500). Just need to be careful not to get caught up in the "just one better" trap!! I like the Easton SL series riser bars and seat posts...and probably stay with Shimano SPD pedals, not sure which are the best?
  9. I can get a set of Avid Juicy Ultimate Carbons locally, they 2nd Hand... what are they like?? I have seen them on 2010 Scalpel Ultimates before... Is there a down side to 2nd hand brakes, other than wear on the pads??
  10. Hey guys...awesome feedback and info...!!! THANK YOU!!! Leaning towards: Elixer Cr Brakes X9 Shifters/Crank/Front Dr XO Rear Dr or XO Brakes XO Shifter/Crank/Front Dr/Rear Dr ...ZTR Alpines on Hopes or Eastons 90's built on a Lefty hub. I weigh 65Kgs so I can ride light on the wheels... I agree, if one is patient you can get New(used) parts here for a lot less than new online! Itching to get going on this but still waiting for the frame and for the Rand/Dollar to settle so I can order the Lefty Speed Carbon XLR
  11. Kosmo...if you knew what I got the frame for you would never tell me to sell.. I have bought bikes built many times and sooner more often than later I change everything... This thread is to see what's changed in the last 5 years... I'm leaning towards XO/X9 and XTR/XT... I like the ZTR Crest rims on Hope hubs, they seem reliable but still race quality...
  12. Thanks for that... I agree... don't need the latest and greatest... thinking X9 even or like u say the new XT and spend money on wheels reather... I'll look at the brakes from CWC...THANKS!!!
  13. Would you say Hope Tech X2 or Race X2's??
  14. Hi guys, I have posted in other threads asking about brakes and groupsets for a 2011 Scalpel Frame build I want to start... I want a good reliable result thats not too heavy. Looks like XTR or X9/XO and Hope 2x brakes if not XTR brakes... What would you guys recommend for someone who is getting back into mtb after 5 years, I'm no pro but have had Scott RC 10's, top end Cannondales, GT lobo DH.. and want something light and reliable and not super expensive... I was thinking of ZTR Crests on Hopes or American Classic wheels... You thoughts/comments appreciated... Callum
  15. Frame? what frame....? I KNOW NUTTIN!!! (heehee) - Right time and place and Gods Grace...
  16. Well lets just say for the price I'm getting the frame and fork for I can build one as spec with XX for R40k less than one in the shop...
  17. If I go XTR brakes I'd more than likely go XTR Group....
  18. So I posted a thread on "Top end disc brakes - what to buy?". I'm building a new 2011 Scalpel Ultimate with XLR Lefty... I am not weight worried but want good fairly top end stuff on the frame to take advantage of the weight... I don't want unreliable or fussy components... I've narrowed the brakes for the Scaplel Ultimate build down to: Hope X2 (Good value) XTR (Reliable) R1 or M8's (Bit pricey) Now I need to decide on groupset....choices would be: XTR? X9? (if I want to skimp) XO? or XX? (is it that much better than XO?) Seems XTR is pretty good for the money and so is XO...I've always liked XTR's presision and touch... I want 10speed and will go SRAM gripshift XO when the 10 speed come out... What would you say is a fair spec to do justice to the Sculptimate??
  19. Well looking at the replies and the pricing online...my choices are: 1st choice - Hope X2 (Good price and Cool green to match the Sculptimate) 2nd choice - Shim XTR 3rd choice - R1 4th choice - Mag M8's (pricey!!!) Now I need to decide on groupsets!!!
  20. I am about to custom build a 2011 Scalpel Ultimate and wondered who can advise me on the best options for disc brakes... I want it custon but reliable... and wondering what Magura/Hope/Avid/etc options I should consider specifying on the bike... Any help appreciated - please specify make and model and your feelings on each.
  21. TNT1 - So I'm a noob then too....maybe to this site....and your comments...your words are really welcoming and inviting to people who think it may be a great way to spend R20,000...and perhaps bring much needed money and support to a sport that was started by noobs who knew no better... I'll make very sure I read very carefully through posts on this site before I take any comment seriously if that is how someone new to this great sport is treated by someone who by his own admission is wiser and more respectfull...and not gay...
