  1. Had a great time at this event last year. Lovely people and great part of the country. I would encourage any one considering it to make the journey. Huge meat prizes for the racing snakes and lots of spot prizes for the rest of us if I remember correctly!
  2. Aye Aye Captain, with boots on but I expect also half asleep after a 4.30am start.... hope to see you there.
  3. Anyone know anything about this event ? Have found the following but it's not a lot to go on. http://www.wildcoastjikeleza.co.za/images/stories/2012fest/jikeleza%20ww-inside%202012%203.pdf I think it has been run before. I'd like to get a better sense of the course & event before making the trek there from G-town. Assume some EL riders may know a bit more ? Many thanks!
  4. Great event yesterday! Tough getting to the top of the mountain but the views, and the flapjacks, were amazing - well worth it. Big thank you to the event organisers and supporting sponsers (excellent goodie bag)! Really appreciate the effort you all put in. S p.s. anyone record total ascent on the 55km route ?
  5. I rode the Thomas River race last Saturday. After about 2hrs of racing I found myself riding along with 2 guys on 29'er FS's (an Epic and a Spark I think). Whenever we hit bumpy flat or downhill they dropped me with ease (on a 26" hardtail). They seemed to be able to keep peddling whilst I was bouncing all over just hanging on to my bike, really wasting energy trying to drive forward. It's the first time I've so directly experienced that side of the FS advantage. I eventually caught them again only when we got onto smoother climbs. My conclusion HT vs FS: it's really course dependant, if you can afford both....
  6. I understand that the Big Nine Carbon Team D is expected to land begining of November and be priced around R45'000-R50'000. Have searched but cannot get any weights on any of the Big Nine bikes. Any one know what the Team D will weigh ? thanks
  7. Thanks All for this quick advice. Useful and narrows it down a little but has got me back in two minds an epic vs hardtail .... Specialized seem to have a few availability issues if you go by their website. Any views on the new Momsem SL929 ? Or would it be better to just buy a secondhand 26" now everyone wants a 29'er..(i see a few s-works epic going on here)? Cheers, Thanks. p.s. i realize it's about the engine not the bike, and I'd ultimately be lighter and richer if I could just stay off the pies. But I like pies. This is just bike lust. There's absolutely no way to justify it. But the mortgage is paid off and I could die tomorrow with money in the bank....
  8. Hi All, Advice please, I've got R50k to spend and want a 29'er before xmas for xc and marathon racing. My parameters: 1. I'm 169cm and 64kg. 2. weight matters - must not weigh more than 9.5kg (w/o pedals) if hardtail of 10.5kg if dual. 3. Must come with a decent frame and warranty for it. 4. Will build myself or buy "off the shelf". 5. Budget R50k (will consider good condition 2nd hand for up to R40k) Grateful for your collective expertise!! Thanks.
  9. Thanks for the welcome and glad to hear G-town brings back some memories..... FYI - Mountain Drive is still a great "on your doorstep" place to ride and currently plays host to not one but two MTB race series, one a night race, organised by the new bike shop in town.

If you live in, or are coming to, Grahamstown you can now get in touch with local cyclists on their new forum: http://grahamstowncycling.proboards.com/ Local rides and expanded route info will be included with time and The Motion Cycling Club has just been launched to serve G-town riders (joining info on forum). Aim is to share knowledge and help grow the cycling, and potential cycling, community in the town. Inspired by, but not intending to replace, this great site!
