  1. I'm amazed at how many ads i see on gumtree where the front forks are set up the wrong way, as per attached example recently seen. Come on?!

But then again its always on these scary budget bikes so i guess they don't know better as aren't avid riders.....still amazes me.

I always reply to their ads telling them their forks are the wrong way hahaha muppets

  2. So many times advertisers have to be asked what size their bike/frame is. Can we not have a step where you have to select it in order to continue with post? See attached pic.

Could this also be used to help filter ads when searching for bikes as i have to go through heaps on awesome looking bikes only to see they're medium, or small or what ever i'm not looking for????

    Would be awesome

  3. So im looking to migrate to the 29er side and being a bit skint will be looking at the entry level rides.

Can anyone offer some advise on which of these would be the better deal to go for???

Merida Big Nine TFS 300-D 29er

    Mongoose Meteore Comp 29R

    Titan 29R Elite

  4. Yea it proven pretty fruitless so far trying to source suppliers of 4130 chromoly here in SA :(

I am looking to build a bike too, hopefully more than one and havent had much success yet. I was considering using 304 stainless or even mild steel but not sure how it would turn out, or how strong they would be. Most bikes are from 4130 and have been heat treated etc.

I am thinking i am going to build one from 304 ss anyways just to check how it all works out...a prototype. This will get teh ball rolling and allow me to check dimensions and how components fit as well as allow for a jig to be made up.

I know Salvo are making their own frames from 4130 in CT and seem pretty good at what they do. I did approach them for help and as k if they would supply me some tubing....it fell on deaf ears and i had no response lol. I did however get a response when i emailed from a different account asking a price on their latest fixie. Go figure.

  5. So looking forward to the Amashova 106km and Asishove 50km. If you enjoy cycling you aint going to complain too much about what time you have to be up :)

    Bring it on

  6. This was my first event and by the end of it realised i had bitten off more than i could chew. What a tough event.

Who else did teh event and what were your thoughts??

I thought there were way too many hills, especially for a novice like myself who struggled from teh 23km mark. There must have been at least half the course that was merely climbing. Im proud i finished albeit in a time of 3h33min.

I was completely drained....i wont be doing that event again thats for sure. It was teh most gruelling thing i've ever experienced lol

Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the race :)

  7. Aaaah great...i thought the 4130 might be difficult to get hold of. Strange considering we have so much steel avail to us here in SA.

Im looking to build a fixie, which will be a larger bmx ultimately. WAs contemplating mild steel but weight might be an issue. Will keep looking.

I know Salvo BMX are making frames from 4130 but have contacted them with no success in finding out where they get it from etc.

  8. What is the best material to build a bike from? And more importantly is it available? I am looking for 3140 chromoly but dont know where to get my hands on it in SA.

    Any feedback appreciated.

  9. Soooo....i am pretty sure various people have attempted this and by now we all have our 5 cents wrth to contribute to the thread :)

I saw this bike online-its a custom build out of the US and i am thinking of making myself one. I have kinda drawn it up in AutoCAD following the design i want. I am looking to produce a 'fixed gear' style bike cross BMX. I need some info on tube requirements, availability and measurements.

There is a standard head tube size and bottom bracket/crank housing? Also seat stem?

I work in a laser tube cutting department where we also have bending and weldign facilities so want to take advantage of these rescources and if all goes well manufacture for resale.

Any tips, help, feedback greatly appreciated.
