  1. What an awesome event this was!!!! Really really well done to the organizers, thanks Nigel for all your hard work!!! hands down the best event I've ever done. Giba is incredible!!! Managed to get into top 30, which I'm pretty stoked about, given it was my first enduro ever and I was riding an xc bike!!! Nigel was there time to pre-ride the courses? I don't know if there was, but I didn't get a chance to and I reckon if I did I could have cut times susbstantially. Or is the course supposed to be like a surprise?
  2. Wowzer, that's hawt!!! But my 2011 model serves me just fine for now
  3. So a 120kg guy can only absorb 27-30g protein, and a 50kg guy can absorb the same??? The amount of protein your body can absorb is actually directly proportional to your body weight, the max your body can absorb is actually 1g per pound of body weight. And this is only if you are training really hard, ie guys doing a lot of weight training. And a cyclist won't be able to absorb this much protein as say a body-builder.
  4. Didn't quite understand the OP properly, but I assume you intend on taking whey after rides. As someone else said Optimum Nutrition is generally regarded as the best whey protein on the market, however it's twice the price of anything locally produced, and I don't think it's worth it. When you finish a ride you need whey protein to begin repairing your muscles, but you also need to restock your glycogen stores with some carbs. So It's not really an issue if you get a "meal replacement" which has a bunch of carbs in it anyway, because your body needs them. If you do want to go for a pure whey, really the quality boils down to the quantity of Whey Isolates versus quantity of Whey Concentrates. Whey Isolates have a higher biological value and therefore your body can synthesise the protein faster and begin muscle repair quicker, but whey isolates are a lot more expensive to produce... Anyway long story short, when looking at a protein on the shelf, if you look at the ingredient list, and whey isolate is listed before whey concentrate then you have yourself a pretty quality protein. (A lot of companies advertise whey isolate in their proteins, and then only like 5% is isolates, so if you check the order in the ingredient list you can avoid being hoodwinked). You can also compare amino acid profiles of your different proteins, your BCAA's (Branch Chain Amino Acids) are the really important ones, which are Leucine, Isoleucine & Valine. Also glutamine is an important essential amino acid. So basically a high quality protein will have a greater quantity of these per 100g than a low quality protein.
  5. Thanks for all the replies. So basically it's not remotely worth it!!! Looking at a Felt Z90 now, advertised for 3k neg. It's a sora/tiagra mix, but it's fairly new, got a carbon front fork. I'm battling to find anything better in that price range in the Durban area! Lemme know if anyone thinks the felt Z90 is a bad idea, until then I'll assume it's alright!
  6. Thanks, great advice!!! Will definitely keep it in mind. Yeah I'm 6ft with an inseam of 85cm, so a 58cm is ideal. How many cms can I go either side before I start compromising the fit of the frame?
  7. Yeah unfortunately there are very few road bikes for sale in KZN on thehub, so I'm mainly using gumtree to look.
  8. Tks for the replies guys!!! yeah bike is a bit old hey, I'm think R5k is too high!!! What kind of spec does the bikes you picked up for 3.5k have? I know a new bike for 3,5k is specced with entry level parts!
  9. Hi Guys I made a post recently about the fact that I'm looking for a cheapish road bike. I'll be using it on a turbo trainer, and for the odd road race (maybe 3 or 4 a year). Anyway I found this bike, it seems to be a pretty decent bike, do you think it's worth the asking price? http://www.gumtree.co.za/cp-sports-bicycles-fitness-in-hillcrest/gt-gtr-roadbike-56cm-491775433 I think this is a spec sheet for the bike: http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?year=2005&brand=GT&model=GTR+Series+3.0#.UclPTvkweSo What do you think, worth R5k? Regards, Nick
  10. Tks a lot guys, really appreciate all the insight. Clearly still have a heck of lot to learn about this stuff. The convertor looks interesting, will definitely look into that. Cheers
  11. Tks for all the replies. Seems like it won't fit, which was kind of what I thought. Which is a good crankset to look at getting? I know the XT crankset is pretty nice, what BB would I need to make that work? Running the Alu frame.
  12. Hi Guys So I've tried to find out about this, but can't seem to find a definitive answer. I've got a 2011 Specialized Epic Comp 29er which has a "Custom SRAM S-1250, 7050 alloy arms, 10-speed triple, GXP spindle, S: 170mm" crankset and a SRAM GXP, outboard bearing bottom bracket. I'm looking at buying a "Sram S2210 BB30 Crank. 2X10 (38/24)" to replace the current crankset, can any confirmed what the compatibility of this is i.t.o. of the bottom bracket? Please can somebody help me, or at least point me in the right direction to finding an answer, I'm a bit of a noob with regard to this! Cheers Nick
  13. Thanks for the advert, not bad deals!! Will keep in mind
  14. Tks for the help guys, and clarification on the groupsets. The only thing now is, nobody ever advertises the year model of their bikes. So when I see a trek 1000 for R3000 and a giant OCR3 for R3000 with the same groupo, I have no idea what the differences between the frames are, especially i.t.o. of weight, for all I know one frame could weigh 3kg and the other one 5kg, if you catch my drift.
  15. Well I checked a online sizing guide, and based on my height and inseam it recommended a 58cm frame. But a 56cm would probably work too
  16. Whats the spec on this bike? It is up in jhb, I'd rather buy something down here that I can inspect before purchasing.
  17. Am I correct in saying that this bike is great value for money, and I should be looking for something like this? Only problem it's in cape town, would prefer to buy locally. Bike looks well specced, fairly high end for R3k http://www.gumtree.co.za/cp-sports-bicycles-fitness-in-cape-winelands/giant-ocr-5-road-bike-size-l-494082290
  18. Found one or two that look potentially good, nothing outstanding that's grabbed my attention. My height is 6.0ft I will probably only buy after next paycheck, but if you got something for sale lemme know. Cheers
  19. Cheers Ryan, thanks a lot I'll give them a shout, appreciate your offer to help out!!! Will PM you if I need your help, cheers
  20. Tks for the advice. I understand the importance of lightweight wheels, but I'm not going to be picky or expect much with my price range. Bare in mind also that I'm not looking to compete on this bike, I'm looking to compete in mtb races in which case I have a good bike. This bike will just be for training and the odd road race, but in the road races I'm not looking to do very well, just don't wanna have to ride my dual sus for road races. Will def check out whats around at my lbs's
  21. Definitely second hand with my price range, size large, preferably 58cm
  22. Thanks for the replies already guys. Yeah I know I'm going to get something pretty entry level. I'm happy with alu frame, I have no need for carbon or anything. Wheels also not a major concern as long as they roll better than a mtb tyre Just with regards to groupset, I've seen most bikes in this price range come with Shimano 105. Is this a decent groupo in terms of reliability, should I stay away from it? Is there any groupsets in my price range that I should look out for? Sorry I would usually research this all myself, but with my price range I can only afford a bike thats a several years old and it's a bit harder to find info. What about this bike? http://www.gumtree.co.za/cp-sports-bicycles-fitness-in-city-centre/road-bike-very-light-492274561?MessageId=MSG.VIEW_AD.REPLY_TO_AD_SENT&mpname=LocClass-R2S&mpuid=%3B492274561%3B72752346%3B3100150%3B9179%3B9204%3B%3B%3B%3B1370871485072&secev=AQAAAT8ozqoAAM0AAAACACIxM2YyZTRlZDI5MC5hMjBiMjcyLjQyZTYyLmZmZjY2NTMzAAAAAB1Xg4EBAAAAKwAAAADKp%2BIA9Eo%2B2KnlQi2JRehVeVvOsArmvT8* Tks Nick
  23. Hi Guys So I'm a mtb'er but I'm looking at buying a road bike to train on (might stick it on a turbo trainer) and will want to use it for the very few road races I may do - Amashova, Tour Durban, Argus etc. What can I expect to get for preferably around R3000? What should I look out for? What kind of groupset should I look for in the price range. I know I'm not going to get a great bike, but I'm just looking for something that isn't too heavy, and is basically reliable. Any help and advice would be appreciated, I'm probably not going to buy immediately, maybe only after the next paycheck, but just want to start seeing what I should be looking for. Thanks Nick
  24. The problematic rear suspension on the spark made me think twice, got the specialized and very happy with it! Been improving my race times pretty substantially.
