  1. Understandable. However, drips are necessary for the full lab rat experience
  2. For anyone interested but unsure of eligibility due to diet or any reason please contact me and I'll send you a questionnaire. Thanks
  3. If you are 45 that might be close enough...
  4. Anyone else interested? Well trained cyclists please...
  5. Thanks to all those who have e-mailed me so far. Keep it coming...
  6. Trumps in terms of? Are you keen to lend your high-carb skills to the trial? There is no intervention, we are interested in how your body functions as a high-carb athlete.
  7. We're in the late stages of testing and are trying to match high-carbers to existing low carb participants. That is why the selection criteria is quite specific.
  8. Hey all Well trained cyclists on a high-carb diet, if you meet the above criteria in the original post and have in interest in your physiology please drop me a mail.

  10. We still need one more participant... Amongst other things, we are measuring: Body fat % Peak power and VO2max Composition of diet (protein, fat and carbs mainly) Watts, HR and VO2 at 55% of peak power Carb and fat oxidation rates Blood glucose, ketones, fatty acid and lactate Muscle glycogen levels before and after a two hour ride Insulin resistance and glucose tolerance There will be detailed feedback for all tests.
  11. Hi cyclists We've had a drop out from the trial so there is space for one more participant. We are looking for a participant for this trial: http://essm.uct.ac.z...bohydrate-diet/ that meets the following criteria: Male, mid to late 30s Well trained and competitive Eats a diet low in fat and high in carbs Available for testing at the Sports Science Institute in Newlands, Cape Town Available for testing from 21 July to 16 Aug. If you meet the criteria and are interested in your physiology and substrate oxidation this trial could be for you. There is feedback and results for all the tests. The feedback includes but is not limited to: Peak power VO2max HRmax Fat and carbohydrate oxidation rates Muscle glycogen levels and rate of use (muscle biopsy) Rate of carbohydrate production by the liver Insulin resistance and glucose tolerance testing Body fat % Dietary analysis There is R750 for participation. Please contact me if you are interested and want more details at wbschr002@myuct.ac.za Thanks, Chris
  12. We have managed to find and test the low carbohydrate cyclists (there were many more out there than we thought), which is why we are now looking for the high carbers.
  13. Please could you e-mail me and I'll send you the relevant information. My e-mail address is wbschr002@myuct.ac.za
  14. Testing is underway and is done on an individual basis. We can start immediately and can schedule it to suit your needs.
  15. Unfortunately not. There is token R150 per visit.
  16. Visit 1: 2.5 hours - includeds dietary analysis and peak power output Visit 2: 2.5 hours - 2 hour steady state ride at 55% of peak power Day prior to visit 3: Come to Sports Science to collect labelled water and give blood sample Visit 3: 5.5 hours - 2nd dietary analysis, tracer infusion, muscle biopsies, 2 hour ride Visit 4: Oral glucose tolerance test (used to measure glucose tolerance and insulin resistance) Whole thing is usually done over 2 to 3 weeks. Hope that helps, Chris
  17. Hello cyclists The University of Cape Town is conducting research into carbohydrate and fat metabolism during cycling in athletes on high fat diets (or the Noakes diet) versus the more standard cycling diet (high carb). If you are intersted in participating in research, learning some interesting things about how your body works and doing a peak power output test this may be for you. Specifically we are looking for athletes that meet the following criteria: Males between the ages of 30 and 44; Well trained and able to ride at a relatively high intensity for two hours; Eat a diet that is HIGH in carbohydrate and LOW in fat; Able to get to the Sports Science Institute in Newlands, Cape Town on 5 occasions for the testing. For more details you can contact me at wbschr002@myuct.ac.za or check out: http://essm.uct.ac.za/glucose-production-during-exercise-in-athletes-on-a-very-low-or-high-carbohydrate-diet/ Thanks, Chris
  18. Thanks for the tip - I have posted on the LCHF thread. It is still early days in terms of results but I would be happy to discuss the trial with anyone who is interested. http://essm.uct.ac.za/glucose-production-during-exercise-in-athletes-on-a-very-low-or-high-carbohydrate-diet/
  19. Hello everyone The LCHF diet is being put to the test in the lab and compared to the low fat high carb diet. UCT is conducting research into how blood glucose is maintained during exercise in cyclists who eat very low carbohydrate diets. We are looking for male cyclists who eat on either extreme: low carb high fat (LCHF) or high carb low fat. If you eat this way and are interested in participating in research please go to the following link for more details: http://essm.uct.ac.z...rcise/#more-349 The testing takes place in Cape Town and feedback will be given on all tests done. Examples of feedback include (but not limited to) VO2max, peak power, fat and carbohydrate oxidation rate, glucose tolerance and glucose production rate at the liver and kidneys. Please spread the word if you know of anyone who might be interested. Regards, Chris
