  1. Hi all I see that 2020 Epic riders are being offered guaranteed entries for 2021 with a 75% discount. Is anybody a 2020 rider that doesn't want to do the event in 2021 and would like to get their 75% back in cash? This would entail you paying the additional 25% for a 2021 entry and then substituting me, in exchange for 100% of the 2021 entry price. I would like to do the event again in 2021 and would be happy to pay full price for the entry, at the time when you substitute yourself out for me. Send me a message if you are keen.
  2. Hubbers Wahoo has pushed a new update to my trainer and since then it seems that the “control with ANT+ power meter” function in the app has stopped working. I normally use my Stages to control the Kickr to prevent power differentials when riding indoors vs outdoors. Anybody else notice this issue? Please help! Dino
  3. Hello Hubbers, Quick question - has anybody ever tried to hook up an S-Works Epic to a Tacx Flux for indoor training purposes? Any suggestions / advice would be awesome! I am running a 2x11 XTR drivetrain... Thanks in advance!
  4. Good morning Hubbers, Sorry for being quiet over the past few days! I have followed the discussion on the forum with close interest and truly appreciate the effort and level of insight which each of you have put into your responses. I also appreciate and understand the arguments from both sides. This clearly is a simple issue on the face of it, that is actually quite complex when you get into the discussion a bit further. Each post raises a good point, and I agree with elements of the arguments from both sides. As an update: Based largely on the discussion and views on this post (thank you), I decided to accept the R2,000 repair quotation and went to Garmin yesterday, paid and am expecting to receive the replacement unit today. A few hours after having paid, Garmin reached out to me to tell me that they had discussed my issue further and, in light of the context surrounding the issue and the unit being so close to within warranty, they have decided to replace it under warranty. They have committed to refund me what I paid yesterday in the coming days. I must say, this wasn’t at all what I expected at the start of the day yesterday but was very well received and extremely appreciated. Starting to understand why some of your refer to Bike Hub as “Garminland”. That is impressive. Thanks again all, have an awesome week! Dino
  5. Yep, I also had that thought but I am quite sure that I didn't
  6. Sure - first one on a Google search... https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/running/forerunner-735xt-aa/1232753-dead-screen-after-one-year-of-using-garmin-735xt
  7. Replacement unit only comes with a 90 day warranty - so might be in the same position in 4 months time!
  8. Ordinarily I would agree, but given that I acquired the watch shortly following its original release, there was no history upon which to do one's "homework". Nobody wants to be unreasonable, but there also needs to be an element of good faith - if it's a known fault due to a manufacturing defect which is unrelated to user force / error, it should be rectified. It simply isn't practical to replace your Garmin watch every year...
  9. Dear Garmin South Africa, I write this post to express my significant frustration and disappointment regarding the quality of the Garmin 735XT watch which I acquired from you 13 months ago, as well as the very poor level of after-sales support which I have received from you in the past 2 weeks. Whilst on holiday in December 2017, my Garmin 735XT watch completely died shortly after completing a morning swim (the 735XT is a tri-watch, so no issues here). Despite trying to reboot and/or charge the watch, I couldn’t get it so switch back on. On returning from holiday, I took the unit to your support centre in Rosebank and was promptly informed that I needed to pay R2,000 for a replacement unit. I find this unacceptable for the following reasons: The watch mysteriously died just 1 month after the expiry of the (very short) 12 month warranty period; There was absolutely no physical damage to the unit and no signs that the watch may have died due to the presence of external forces. As such, one can only conclude that the unit died due to a manufacturing default; andThe 735XT is known to have had a number of issues, including this one. When I booked my unit in at the support centre, your own staff admitted to me that “you don’t want to know” how many issues Garmin has been having with the watch. Furthermore, I am personally aware of two individuals who have returned the watch in the past month for the exact same reason. Upon escalating the issue to you, I was told that “there are no known issues with the Garmin FR 735XT with regards to the screen dying and then not functioning any longer” and the decision for me to be made to pay for a replacement unit was enforced. In light of the information I have provided above, not only am I aware of two individuals who returned their 735XT units for the same reason, but your own support staff made a concession to this effect. This statement is therefore clearly in bad faith and untrue. I have tried to contact you to discuss the issue in more detail via 3 separate e-mails over the past week as well as via 4 phone calls, to no avail. I have therefore had to resort to a more public forum in an attempt to escalate the issue. In closing, myself (and I’m sure many other members of the cycling and broader endurance sport community) support Garmin due to (i) the known robustness and durability of your products and (ii) the quality of your after-sales service. This has been a very disappointing and immensely frustrating experience which is totally at odds with this. Should consumers accept that the Garmin “of old” no longer exists and start looking to other brands to achieve the levels of quality and after-sales support we are looking for? Please could you contact me urgently to discuss further. You have my details, I have called and e-mailed many times. Dino
  10. Just as an update - my toys have arrived! See picture attached. Will let you know how the fitment goes and how I am enjoying the new ride...
  11. Will do - let's see what they say... Would be quite happy to wait and/or take and XTR derailleur instead... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. Can you believe it I ordered and paid on Chain Reaction only to receive a mail from them later in the day saying the derailleur I had ordered was out of stock, so they refunded and cancelled my order! (While I lost R200 on the exchange rate in the process!) Very bleak - not sure what to do now as they won't place the item on back order for me it seems... Will keep you posted!
  13. Thanks very much for all the extremely useful advice, insights and help on this! I have ordered and paid! Settled on the XT shifter, chain and derailleur, with an 11-46t at the back and the only difference being I chickened out of the 34t oval ring up front and stuck with the 32t (never know when you will need that granny!) Let's see how it goes... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Sounds great! I currently have XT brakes but with a direct bar mount. I think this means I will need to stick to the direct mount XT shifter? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Splat, see my final proposed config above. Any thoughts would be great??
  16. Thanks again for all the responses everyone! See below my revised order, after taking everybody's responses into account. I think the XTR shifter with multi-release makes sense. I also think a 34t front oval ring with Shimano's new 11-46 tooth cassette at the back gives nice range? (I am small, light and climb well...) - Chainring: BLACK by Absoluteblack narrow wide oval single chainring (34t, 104mm) - Shifter: Shimano XTR M9000 11 speed trigger shifter rear (bar mount) - Derailleur: Shimano XT M8000 Shadow+ 11 speed rear mech (medium cage) - Cassette: Shimano XT M8000 11 speed 11-46t - Chain: Shimano Ultegra 6800-XT M8000 HG701 11 spd Any final thoughts? Not sure whether to go for the "long" or "medium" cage derailleur...? Views on the 34t, 11-46 combo? Per the responses to this post, seems the Absoluteblack ring will fit fine on my current SRAM crank? Thanks everybody! Exciting times...
  17. Thanks very much for the very helpful replies everybody! Now just need to try and work out if there is a way I can keep my current SRAM crank so as not to change the BB?!?
  18. The only issue with the Comp Carbon is that it is sold with SRAM cranks. Not sure if you can find an XT chain ring that will fit a SRAM crank on the 1x11 config so as not to mess with the BB? Options here: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/za/en/shimano-xt-1x11sp-gear-kit-bundle/rp-prod142199 Full bike specs: SRAM S-1250, 7050 Alloy Arms, 10-Speed XC Double, PF30 Spindle, S: 170mm, Others: 175mm
  19. Dear hubbers, Apologies as I know this has been a much-discussed topic in the past (but not in relation to this specific bike, I believe...) A very simple question: I have a 2014 Specialized Epic Comp Carbon, currently in a 2x10 setup, and am looking to convert the bike to a XT 1x11 Groupset (see link to the exact Groupset below). Will this work on my bike? I am looking to buy the following Groupset off Chain Reaction Cycles (with the 170mm, 32t & "Bar Mount" options selected): http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/za/en/shimano-xt-1x11-drivetrain-groupset/rp-prod137311 My bike is unmodified from the factory-standard specs, other than a ZTR Crest / Hope wheel set which I have upgraded to. Full spec list here: http://www.vitalmtb.com/product/guide/Bikes,3/Specialized/Epic-Comp-Carbon,13438 Thanks very much in advance for the help! Dino
  20. Dear all, I believe that the gates have been closed through the valley on the Rhenosterspruit ride up in Joburg. Anyone able to give more info? Is the route still rideable? If they are closed, any ideas what the story is there? Thanks so much!

    sani2c Feedback

I seldom post on The Hub (rather read), but after recently having completed my 3rd Sani (my father his 6th), this is something I feel strongly about: Good (as always, too many to put into 5 points, but these my highlights): 1. The new setup at Jolivet - everything about it! Wonderful, in comparison to the rabbit warrens of the past... 2. Umko was in the best condition I have ever ridden it - really stunning (contrary to other people, no significant descent delays experienced by me) 3. Glencairn farm. Although the start at Underberg school was always good, the extra space afforded by the farm, as well as the stunning views, will certainly add an extra element to the event in coming years. This year we didn't see the full benefit, due to the change being a bit last minute, but I think that when things are properly ready next year and we have all moved our accommodation for the first night to the right place, the new start will be awesome. 4. The water points/seconding tables were top class, as always 5. The post ride "gees" was really well done this year. From Max's antics, to the photo montage and video presentation which is seemingly miraculously made in just a few hours, these special few hours in the race villages in the evenings, sharing war stories from the day that has been, really made it for me. Bad: 1. The quality and sizes of the kit this year was really bad. With an event that has a reputation for the best commitment to quality possible, this really let the brand down. I feel that after 11 years of doing this, "it is what it is" simply isn't a good enough excuse anymore. You guys felt the loss of Salomon and Aca Joe in a big way this year... An idea to curb these issues which are experienced every year would be to leave blank (unbranded) items of kit in stores (depending on the sponsors for the year) in the major SA hubs during the year prior to Sani. That way people can try on the kit for the coming year's event and get their size orders right in advance. If you have a sponsor on board, that would also be a great way to push people to their stores and boost their own sales (win-win). 2. Although it didn't impact me directly (fortunately I was in front of them), I have heard a lot of very negative feedback about SuperGroup starting in D batch daily on the Adventure (also refer the Hub forum on this). The fact that many of these riders were real novices, riding in a high up batch, caused chaos on any and all technical areas of the route (especially Umko) 3. This really speaks to the point raised in 2, above. Farmer Glen, you always speak about how you are a farmer first and foremost. Please just guard against your events becoming too commercialized, with some boardroom in Joburg calling the ultimate shots on what currently is the greatest stage race on earth. The SuperGroup debacle is a good example of this. 4. Like many complaints on the forum so far, the MacKenzie Club showers need to be expanded and improved. 5. The finish in Scottburgh. Although I accept that there will always be congestion because of the physical layout of the beach (and personally love finishing at the sea), perhaps a bit more thought could be put into the logistics at the finish to reduce the congestion experienced for the last 3 years. I know this isn't easy, but I believe with enough good planning, it can be done. As always, we will see you next year!
