  1. Yup same happened to me this weekend ... Thule ER940 ... bike was okay but plastic "foot" melted away ... the Thule ER940 was supplied with the Toyota Fortuner [bought new last month] and was supplied by Toyota as "tested for the Fortuner" ... mmm ... I think not ... I'm getting Toyota / Thule to replace the melted bits and have just queried chrome end piece to the Fortuner exhaust to prevent it happening again ... apparently [according to dealer] no issue with vehicle performance so I'll pursue this avenue for now ... but PLEASE! surely if its happened before AND the carrier is sold and stocked as a Toyota "tested" part then there should be a read-to-go elegant solution ?!
  2. Living and cycling in the Fourways area for some years I used Witkoppen and Cedar Road as road cycle training routes ... on a number of occasions during my last season I had seen [and once been closely involved in] taxi drivers knowingly push cyclists off the road ... pass cyclists dangerously close ... narrowly overtake a cyclist then cut the cyclist off whilst coming to a dead stop ... in every case that I've witnessed it was clearly no accident. One morning I approached some traffic officers on duty at end of Cedar Road, thanked them for their presence and shared that we [cyclists] are seeing an increase in malicious and provocative driving by taxis ... the officer on duty seemed to be aware of this and assured me they were doing their best with resources they had ... I decided [sadly] to stop training on Cedar and Witkoppen.
  3. Thanks Scotty! ... it also has a nice feature that helps you log and track maintenance events. I'll soon add the possibility to receive by email a .pdf "certificate" listing the registered bike criteria ...
  4. ... a question often asked ... indications (there are no bike theft statistics available in ZA) are that random theft is a smaller part of the problem ... organized crime is suspected ... and then we also assume they cross our borders. Keep in mind that as ownership cannot be proven in general bikes crossing our borders go unchallenged ...
  5. The bikejack debate and general cyclist safety has been going on for some years. Still we see no improvement in the general trend ... and no comments it seems from authorities. The bike theft scourge is still alive and well! The National Bicycle Registry was started about 3 years ago in response to two of my fellow cyclists being bike jacked ... I spent some time with SAPS forums after the event and discovered that law enforcement has a big problem when it comes to prosecuting perpetrators of bike theft [by any means] ... proof of ownership is in most cases not possible ... not to mention being understaffed and ill-equipped. In addition, in cases where suspected stolen bikes were recovered [e.g. crossing our borders] there is no system to locate the original owner. I thus started the Registry [free by cyclists for cyclists]. It proved itself when two bikes were recovered and traced [near Diepsloot]. The Registry is operated similar to motorized vehicle registration ... and its free to all cyclists. If indeed the message goes out that stolen bikes can be traced and perps prosecuted we may well neutralize some of the motivation to steal ... and if this prevents even one bike jacking then I've achieved what I set out to do. I have also canvassed bike shops and online 2nd hand bike dealers to check and track VIN numbers (frame numbers) when servicing or listing bikes ... and to visit the Stolen Bike list on the Registry. We cannot hold our breath hoping bike theft will go away ... we can and should look after our own. Please visit www.bicycleregistry.co.za

  7. @Gary: Thank you for registering! ... Just for info ... the Registry was started about 3 years ago in response to two of my fellow cyclists being bike jacked ... I spent some time with SAPS forums after the event and discovered that law enforcement has a big problem when it comes to prosecuting perpetrators of bike theft [by any means] ... proof of ownership is in most cases not possible. In addition in cases where suspected stolen bikes were recovered [e.g. crossing our borders] there is no system to locate the owner. I thus started the Registry [by cyclists for cyclists] just after this event. It proved itself when two bikes were recovered and traced [near Diepsloot] just over a year ago. The Registry is operated similar to motorized vehicle registration. If indeed the message does go out that stolen bikes can be traced we may well neutralize some of the motivation to steal ... and if this prevents even one bike jacking then I've achieved what I set out to do. I note comments further down the list of concerns about information safety ... this is a topic very close to our core ... we do not share any personal info with anyone. We have purposefully not involved any corporate entity [and we have been approached] ... the Registry stands by its founding ethic ... for cyclists by cyclists. If further info is required about the Registry, welcome to drop us a mail at www.bicycleregistry.co.za. Safe cycling! Will.
