  1. that narrows it down a bit
  2. Sorry' date=' but To Hell and Back cannot be the best one day ride, even if you did do it in one day. What are the criteria for judging?[/quote'] Umm, sorry Spandex?it SO can be the best one day ride?especially if you do it like the Hell and Back One Day all the way event and start in Prince Albert!! I am with Underachiever?this has my vote! <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Baviaanskloof 24 hr - doing that in a day is half the point spandex2009-03-11 03:54:14

I am with Underachiever?this has my vote! <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> but all those miles of corrugated dirt road?? and not even spending the night in Die Hel? to compare what I think is a similar apple I'd rather do Baviaanskloof 24hr - although i've driven through it, so can only imagine what the riding is like or even the Karoo to Coast route for that matter - nice change of climatic zone / terrain and all tending downhill can't comment on mtb rides much outside the WC, unfortunately
  4. http://www.kalahari.net/books/Best-mountain-bike-rides-in-South-Africa/35965/27925981.aspx You might find this useful if you're planning a road trip - although it is out of date because it won't include the new 'trail centres' - depends what you're looking for. To backtrack on my previous comment, Die Hel is most certainly worth visiting on a mountain bike as an experience, but spend the night there. The bulk of the riding is a wide dirt road. Why not break it down by province? Also see http://www.mtbroutes.co.za/ but this involves more digging.

  6. That's hardly a day ride. It can easily be done in an hour and a half. Impressive....a few more laps and it'll be half a day ride...add lights and some determination and it'll be a 24 hr slog! My wife won't be doing it in an hour and a half any time soon, and she was 4 months pregnant the last time we did it - took us about half a day. Out of interest, what's our definition of a one day MTB ride, and according to what criteria are we judging the best one (day ride)? Also, who really spends the entire riding their bike (unless they're training for the Epic, and even then it sounds misdirected)??
  7. all sounds very complicated - not so sure you need to take a whole Friday off to get ready for a ride?? another spare tube and you're set... experience is still the best teacher. oh, and enjoy dusting off your bmx skills!
  8. Harkerville Red Route
  9. rather practice removing / fitting a dirty nappy rock
  10. thought so - concrete bridge up ahead right? i was coming down from the other side. OMG he was taking up half the road just like this...so far my third close encounter with puff adders.
  11. This looks like the Puff Adder crossing on the Rhodes Mem road! Seriously, a few months ago I had to correct my line, coming around a corner, to get around one of these okes - in fact it may actually have been the very same snake because it looks like it might be the same spot. hectic. I didn't stop to take pics.
  12. they don't need an introduction - they've been there for years - see them on table mountain from time to time, silvermine as well
