  1. Peterjohn, I ride the spruit all the time, from Alberts Farm, Emmarentia, and up to Conrad - never witnessed any trouble, or been a victim of it. I carry pepper spray as the dogs, not criminals, are the issue! For some reason the signs all around that have "dogs on leashes only" emblazoned on them are not visible by dog owners . My wife and I have had some close calls. One day when I unleash a can of SWAT on a dog right in front of its owner its going to stir up one hell of a ruckus!Somehow dog owners insist that "killer", their pet rottweiler or german shepherd was acting most "peculiarly" and "out of character" when they tried to rip you off your bike presumably to lick you to death out of affection...... Seriously though, one one Saturday morning, while out riding in a group of 4, a lady had been murdered between 6 and 7am near the Riverside Spar in Bryanston area, and was left about 2-3 metres from the path. The book I have on mtb trails in SA says about the spruit that cyclists have been consistently and violently attacked on the spruit since the early 90's. The authors recommend riding in groups more than 2 at all times (Herman and Sussanah Mills were the authors. So its luck of the draw bud. Make sure you can get a rabies or tetanus shot closeby though.... Orvor2009-09-04 01:47:45
  2. Don't have more details, sounded like the driver did a maverick move and didn't see the cyclist.
  3. I heard yesterday that a cyclist was killed instantly on the corner of Empire and Rivonia, right outside the entrance to IBM, at about 7:50am on Tues. He was a commuter and from what I was told, was hit by a guy in a mini cooper. I heard from colleagues that the car was not damaged at all. Goes to show you that you can be fatally injured even at a speed that would not cause big/any damage to a car. I thought something was up because traffic was backed up badly until past 08:30am. Guys we have to be so so careful out there - I wonder if its worth it any more..... Are there any stats out there about accidents involving cyclists riding alone, vs cyclist in bunches? Does the "safety in numbers" concept work? Anyone know? Robin.
  4. I bought my Epic 5 years ago at Summit Cycles. Since then, not a single breakage or component failure experienced. Shocked at whats happened to the prices since then. Get this: I paid about R17,500-00 and its replacement value is now R32500-00 for insurance purposes. Anyone wanna steal an EPIC? Kidding for the record. I guess your whole experience can be soured by one guy, but for me there is only one brand (ok maybe I'd try FELT or the Giant Anthem next).
  5. Dirt, Try commuting to work - there is an active thread on this at the moment. Better to use a mtb and avoid roads as much as possible and you can begin the commute at 06:30 and be at work by 08:30 depending on where you live. It takes some adjustment, but you will find a way to work out the logistics if you really want to. For the sacrifices made, 10-15 hours in the saddle before you hit Saturday is the reward. Obviously if you live in Roodepoort and work in Springs means you will have to wake up earlier. Jokes aside, then you're better off in spinning classes. Regards
  6. Anyone had any incidents in or around Alberts Farm or Emmarentia?
  7. Eish, my Fox Brain rear shock needs a service. Johann, any ideas who I could take it to in Gauteng (Northern Suburbs)?
  8. I've searched the archives on this, but don't seem to find any answers. My question is - Is it possible to run a double chain ring as an average rider (Riding 4x per week) on a mtb? Maybe reduce the size (teeth) of one of the 2 chain rings at the front, and increase the size of the granny gear at the back (if its possible from a 34T to something bigger?) Has anyone done this - is it even feasible?
