First: N+1 Second: Absolutely depends on the route. If you stay in the city, only flat tarmac, I would go rigid mtb with road tyres. Lighter bike, but can take a bit of curb-hopping. If there are a few hills around, I'll go geared, but still rigid.

Safety is really not a thing. We have been going there with kids for two years now, never any issues. When we started investigating the area as a likely spot for our major school outing, and asked about safety, we got a few strange looks from the locals. Locked gates are not a thing. If you really want to take someone along, the two oukes in the Adventure dept at Stanford Lake College are keen cyclists racing snakes. I can probably try and find a number if you want.

Keep the road bike - come race time you will be sad. N+1... Even if that means an old clunker.

Before someone mentions it, yeah, I know, Rule #5. But... On my 60km commute, a single speed will only be in the right gear maybe 10% of the time. I bought an old bike for the commute, so I'm not wearing out my race bike.

I have slicks on my rigid 26". The ride is very hard on the sidewalk/gauteng rocky dirt. I've been wondering whether I shouldn't go with a crossmark up front (have a spare) for more grip and less of a hard ride.

Nah, if he is that adventurous, think a Strider will be good. He'll fall a few times, but that is how they learn. Got my son a pedal bike for his 4th birthday, and he ditched the training wheels within the week. You'll be amazed how fast they learn.

Think I must get me one of those. Currently the fixed seat is on my wife's bike, so I take her bike when it's just me and the kids, and when the wife is along, she lets me hear it about how big our girl has grown since last week... Also I think it must be a bit more comfortable for them, as they sit over the front shock vs over the hard rear axle?

Anyone commuted in Petoors yesterday? I went to work on my bike, but that was very early (before the rioters awoke). Then at work, everybody got these messages about CBD and Scummyside being in chaos. I have to go Fountains, then Nelson Mandela, which has CDB one side, and Scummyside the other. I chickened out, and asked a colleague to drop me off... This morning I took the car down my usual route, and everything seemed fine. Made me think (again) that the social reporting is a bit off the mark.

The amount of scars I picked up while crashing my red BMX... Grew up on a plot, red sand all over, lots of ramps and ditches. Also lots of veld/other peoples' plots with trails. My brother had a blue one, and we would be cruising the neighborhood (aged 5 and 7, late '80s) We knew pretty much all the streets and kids within a 5km radius. My friend got a blue Bomber for his birthday, I was jealous as hell. Today I won't let my son out without an escort (me), even though there's a nice piece of veld behind the house, and trails running along the river.... oh well, gives me an excuse to go ride as well, and the wife HAS to approve...
