  1. Suriname is the smallest country in South America, on the Alantic ocean 5 degrees north of the equator. The small country has an even smaller population of only 435 000 persons and Niewe Nickerie is the second biggest town with 40 000 inhabitants. The Official language is Dutch, with English widely spoken as many people are from the nearby Carribeans and Guyana. The people come in every colour imaginable. As a background this is from the CIA world Fact Book https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/ns.html <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Ethnic groups: Hindustani (also known locally as "East Indians"; their ancestors emigrated from northern <?:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Indiaon> in the latter part of the 19th century) 37%, Creole (mixed white and black) 31%, Javanese 15%, "Maroons" (their African ancestors were brought to the country in the 17th and 18th centuries as slaves and escaped to the interior) 10%, Amerindian 2%, Chinese 2%, white 1%, other 2%
  2. <?:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Niewe Nickerie, Surinameon>, SA.<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Sometime I think it?s as if I have died and woken up in Bicycle heaven Imagine a town with narrow crowded streets, where Motor Cars, Motor Bikes , Bicycles and Pedestrians all share the road, and the Bicycles and Pedrestrians have the right of way! Here motorists wait for bicycles and give them plenty of room. 50% of the school kids go to school by bike, Guys take their Girls out by bike. And many adults do their shopping by bike It is possible to ride a bike and maintain one?s dignity. The speed limit is 50km /Hour in town and it is almost never broken. That speed limit is a joy as on my morning ride I often manage to motor pace a truck , bus or motor bike. The only downside in this cyclists paradise is the total lack of hills. On my 35km morning circuit I never get higher than 4 metre above see level!
  3. 86km/hr down the Soutpansberg at 3am with only a weak moon and the white line to guide me. It was 3 hours before it was light enough to check the Max speed on my computer. However the interesing apart is going thru the tunnels at the bottom on the mountain. The term "focusing on the light at the end of the tunnel" takes on a whole new meaning when it's starlight you are focusing on.
  4. ORCA, Sign up at our offices in Soekramsingh Str. Nw Nickerie. The Pay is SRD850.00 per month. Knowledge Dutch preferable, but Afrikaans acceptable. Big H You will not believe it the the fundies are having trouble getting those Mozambiquean immigrants to breed. Thank Goodness for that as I am having trouble trying to build their habitats in the swamp as it keeps raining in the "Dry"season.
  5. Niewe Nickerie, Suriname, S.A. Wednesday 1st Nov. What a pleasure to live and work in a bicycle orientated society! I sit down with my 43 year old college educated secretary and draw up a list of office supplies needed. When she is unsure of the English descriptions I use, I explain in Afrikaans and she understands immediately. We do an estimate of the cost , I give her the money and ask her to get the stuff. I do not sugguest how she gets into town to get it. Next moment she hops on her bicycle parked outside the office with all the other bikes and in about 45 minutes she is back from the 8km round trip with the stuff. As she gets in I tell her about the stuff I forgot to put on the list, and with a smile she is on her bike again back into town!
  6. Dirt Rider, The 140 Mozambiqueans are king prawns, so they are on a six month reproductive cycle! The other inhabitants of Moz are striving to match them.
  7. Big H I see I am a member already. The first 140 Mozambiqueans arrived to do duty on our project here in Suriname last week, after a 20 hour flight via Florida USA and are currently in quarintine. Those 140 are expected to produce about 100million offspring .
