  1. Seems that it is a slow day at work for Big H. If you want to be seen at night, and want to make your presence felt on the road you need to do it right. I do 80% of my training in the dark so here is how. ( Apologies I got no couch so I took the casino Slot Machine shot) So what have we here, at the Back is the Cateye LD 1000 And at the front a Cateye EL-Hl 320 giving 1200 candle power. My training partner has a bicycle bell and uses it a lot to warn people wandering into the road, so I got a Zound Air Air Horn, which at 120decibel sounds like a Electric locomotive approaching a level crossing. Works rather better than the bicycle bell. This bottle is the air reservoir. Pump it full with the bike pump at it lasts for about 50 blasts.
  2. I am looking forward with great interest to see how they cope with the PPA 4 in one.
  3. Use it or loose it.
  4. In training I get up to 185 chasing trucks and buses in racing 193+. (Age 60) Was tested April 1972 by Human Science Lab at 188, so haven't changed in over 35 years.
  5. Ewep, Is is not a case of chicken and egg suitation? Up to now CSA have not recieved any funding from the vast majority of cyclists, so yes they have not provided is services and support to cycling they could have. 20 000 cyclists have happily given the funding to the PPA , and they have been able to provide services to cyclists - in a restricted area. Now we have a unified body national we need to fund and support it. Then bitch and moan it they do not perform.
  6. Which sport do you want to look at ? Every sport has the same structure and rules, tennis, hockey, rugby, cricket, swimming, Pigdeon racing, show jumping, Endurance horse riding, snooker, darts, Karate, wrestling and Boxing. Why should cycling be a special case?
  7. If you run the comrades, take part in any sport competition , be it tennis, golf, hockey, rugby, cricket, Karate, gymnastics, squash snooker or darts you have to belong to a club. Why does it irk for cycling?
  8. The sooner they are implemented the better. Cycling has been the "Odd man out"in sport in SA for far to long. Al last every cyclist who wants to partake in organised cycling will to belong to a club and contribuite to the provential and national bodies. A great step forward.
  9. Not in the case of a Vertical axis turbine, Lift or more correctly Torque is generated throughout the rotation of the aerofoil
  10. They always do this to me, we have two events in the area on the same Day. Now I have a choice between Pedallers "Challenging route" and a 70km flat ride at the Louis Trichardt Air Force Base. I had hernia Surgery on Thursday but the "Challenging route" is very tempting. I think that I may just show support for Colin's big gesture. <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
  11. It is possible to get "lift" from an aerofoil , like a yacht sail or a subject that I am looking at at present, wind Turbines. This site site explains the concept a bit http://club.cycom.co.uk/vertAxis.html . However it would be impossible to get "Lift" from a symetrical object like a bike wheel.
  12. ChampionChip have done the right thing by Polokwane Pedallers, and will be timing their race next Saturday For Free! Thanks Colin !! (and well done Hubbers!) This is how the Polokwane Pedallers announced the event. Dear Cyclist Thank you for participating in our Road Hog race held in August 2007. You may recall that we decided to use this race as a fund raiser for Johan de Lange who lost his leg in a motor bike accident. We are happy to report that through your participation and generous contributions we raised R9 000 and paid it over to the school. the teacher who is managing this fund told us that our contribution helped a lot and they got the full R30 000 needed for his prostheses. Without your help this would not have been possible. Our next race is on 15 September 2007 and we managed to select an get a permit for a brand new route!! This is quite a challenging route with rolling hills and a few climbs. We really are exited about this race and what the route offers cyclists. A new feature is that the Christian Motorcycle Association will be patrolling the route with 15 bikes during the race to enhance your safety. ChampionChip also confirmed that they will be here to time our race. They offered to time this race free of charge to make amends for the previous race which they could not time due to unforeseen circumstances. We believe this is a great offer and look forward to them timing our race. Regards George
  13. Hendrik, I am also at home , If you Pass through LTT going to or from Singwedzi call and we will put the kettle on.
  14. Rad, This thread has nugged some race organisers in our area to start thinking more seriously about aquiring their own system. I had supper last night with someone who paid R66 000.00 to Colin in June, so naturally the topic came up. 66 G's will buy a lot of stuff, but it needs research to get the right stuff.
  15. I also had a great 100km ride to-day. We also have a public holiday to-day, we are celibrating the Ameridians and Javanese migrants. My ride was harder at an average pulse rate of 144bpm, but on absolutely flat roads, most between 2m and 3 metre above sea level with one climb up to about 6m to get on to this bridge over the Nickerie river. Flat roads make you work as there is no rest! This draw bridge is 30km inland and seen here at high tide when I paddled from here to the town 25km away one Sunday. Ships can pass under the Bridge when it is raised. This afternoon I have mapped out a 20km route on the 6 km Corintijn River. The tides are right for a late afternoon paddle. This is where I will start from this afternoon. And of course it is summer, as it is all year here. We have a Min. Temp of 24deg C and a max of 30deg C every day of the year! Bliss! 16. My standard vernier measures to .02mm (1/50mm) or 1/1000 inch, although it only measure to 140mm , Standard verniers are available which measure more than 300mm With an inch ruler you will be guessing anything finer than 1/16 of inch. My only use for a inch gauge is symbolic. I have experienced worn chainrings on a mountain bike that needed replacement although I have never had a worn road chainring that needed replacement. I have some Campag chainrings still doing service 35 years later.
  17. Not True fandacious. There was an out of court agreement.
  18. Yep, its obvious that your as high as a kite! Why Drink 'n drive when you can smoke 'n fly?
  19. The Main cost for timing a small country event is the traveling cost of the timing van. Any event in the Far North starts with a R3500.00 bill for traveling. The Timing fee is added to that so Timing a small event country costs in the region of R 20.00 - R 30.00 per rider
  20. Come on Colin, Not Good enough! If you have a contract you live by it. You could have driven up yourself and handled it on your own. It may be a small event, but they reqularly use your services.
  21. The Price on Totalcycling.com is about 24 Pounds= R 360.00 I paid about R600.00 at Johnsons cycling 3 months ago for one. And they have been around a long time. I have used the same basic shape Selle San Marco saddle since about 1970. Maybe then the did not have the "Rolls"plate
  22. The race is being used to raise frunds for a worthy cause, ( see below) so I think that Colin needs to put his hand into his pocket and contribute. Dear Cyclist Just a reminder of our Road Hog cycle race as listed below. You might have read or heard about the tragic incident involving Johan de Jager. Johan is a Grade 12 learner in Tom Naude high school and is a keen sportsman. He was involved in a motorbike accident 2 weeks ago and lost his lower right leg. He needs to get a prostheses, but he does not belong to a medical aid. One of the teachers at the school started a fund raising to assist him. The total amount required is R30 000.00 Polokwane Pedallers decided to use this race to assist as well and plough something back into the community who supports us. We will be donating a portion of each entry fee towards this fund. His friends from the school will be marshals on the route and the fees we would have paid them will also go towards the donation. If you personally want to contribute to this worthy cause as well please deposit the money into the collection box that will be at the entry tables. See you at the race!!! 23. Polokwane peddlars were dropped in the Cr@p when Champion chip decided not to honour a contract for timing the Road Hog race on saturday. This is what the Club Chairman has to say. Dear Cyclist We have just heard from ChampionChip that they will not be honouring their contract with us, which we signed with them in November last year already, to time our race on Saturday. Apparently it is due to unforeseen staff problems. The management committee of the club agreed that we have a moral obligation to inform you of this change as we advertised the race as being timed by ChampionChip. We also understand that some of you only decided to enter and maybe travel some distance due the fact that it is a timed race. I can assure you that we seen this breach in contract in a very serious light and will take the matter further. It also poses a problem to us to allocate prize money especially to category winners. We decided to turn this problem into a opportunity and decided the following: The race will continue with same high standards and effort that we organised our previous races; Johan de Lange will still benefit from this race; Medals will still be given to each person who completes the race; We will not be awarding prize money to race or category winners - instead we will have at least 15 cash prizes of R150 each. This will be allocated by means of a lucky draw at the normal prize giving time advertised. All cyclists who finish the race and attend the lucky draw will qualify to get a prize through the lucky draw. Everybody therefore has an equal change to receive prize money. The money that we save on the timing and the saving in prize money will also be handed over to Johan as part of the fund raising we promoted in our earlier email. We invite you to still enter for the race and enjoy the day with us and at the same time help a young person in need. There will a be coffee shop with food and drinks on the premises which will be open until the prize giving ceremony. We apologise for any inconvenience, but at the same time ask you to see the positive side of this race where we plough back into the community with your support. Keep on cycling!!!
