  1. Subh Davali !! Holy Roller had a rant about Divali and fireworks earlier in the week. Here in Nickerie Thursday night about 2000 people (10% 0f the population) took part in a optocht (procession) through the streets celebrating this important festival of light. (not one firework to be heard) The Guys in Pink was there on his bike with his camera following the Optocht for Hubbbers. Of Course being Nickerie Bikes were an important part of the proceedings Colour full costumes and lights everywhere. Colour, lights and Bikes, this is Nickerie. From Lamps to Flaming torches, Light is light. Bikes, Balloons, Lights and Palms. It's all fun Young Girls were carried aloft representing the Goddess. The Load is light and even the bearers of the litter had fun And still more bikes passed the Guys in pink. Look at the smiles and the joy of the participants, they really had fun! The Guy in Pink also had fun on his bike. Friday is a public Holiday to Celebrate Divali , and to-morrow night the residents will celebrate at home, lighting lamps in their homes and on the streets in front of their houses . Sahb Divali !! 2. They have never generated the sort of funds needed yet. It does cost money to collect and administer funds, and administer the sport. 2008 will be the first year that a universal licencing system will be in place , and hopefully they can start to do things with the money.
  3. And when the cycling body tries to get its finiances in order by asking every cyclist to join up and pay an annual fee (licence) just listen to all the " What do they do for ME? " shouts on this board.
  4. Louis Botha Avenue was just great way back when. The Traffic did not move at all , so you could zipp along between the cars. Death Bend was called that from the Time I was in Primary school. Then it had Tram tracks to trip bikes.
  5. About a million years ago I took my track bike into College , (next to Park Station) from Modderfontein. Coming back I decided to avoid Louis Botha Avenue at Rush hour without brakes so I went down Sylvias ass . . . I Made the corner at the bottom .. just.
  6. Long Cranks for a Track Bike? And Why the Brakes?
  7. Diwali is BIG here. It is "The festivle of Lights", and the people light up their houses, and in the evening set lamps on the streets in front of their houses. I am looking forward to Thursday night's procession through the streets of our small town. Last year there were 75 groups of about 30 people , all dressed up in traditional costume and carrying lamps and lights, with music and drums and chanting. I followed them about on my bike to cut through the crowds . At Diwali there was not one cracker to be heard anywhere. The crackers are reserved for New Year when hundreds of tonnes are ingnited leaving the streets red with paper from the fireworks. The crackers are set off in strings, Last year one was over 300 metre long.
  8. Johan, You are confusing the properties of your liquids. Viscosity is not necessarily related to lubrication . In your trumpet paraffin works because it is thinner than your singer oil, not because it is a better lubricant
  9. Paraffin is an abrasive. Diesel a lubricant. Rather use diesel for cleaning the chain , but stick to the paraffin to light the braai unless you want wors tasting like the underside of a 20 tonne truck.
  10. Old Bucket , when will the online bit be ready?
  11. Why does he wear gloves?
  12. Seems that it is a slow day at work for Big H. If you want to be seen at night, and want to make your presence felt on the road you need to do it right. I do 80% of my training in the dark so here is how. ( Apologies I got no couch so I took the casino Slot Machine shot) So what have we here, at the Back is the Cateye LD 1000 And at the front a Cateye EL-Hl 320 giving 1200 candle power. My training partner has a bicycle bell and uses it a lot to warn people wandering into the road, so I got a Zound Air Air Horn, which at 120decibel sounds like a Electric locomotive approaching a level crossing. Works rather better than the bicycle bell. This bottle is the air reservoir. Pump it full with the bike pump at it lasts for about 50 blasts.
  13. I am looking forward with great interest to see how they cope with the PPA 4 in one.
  14. Use it or loose it.
  15. In training I get up to 185 chasing trucks and buses in racing 193+. (Age 60) Was tested April 1972 by Human Science Lab at 188, so haven't changed in over 35 years.
  16. Ewep, Is is not a case of chicken and egg suitation? Up to now CSA have not recieved any funding from the vast majority of cyclists, so yes they have not provided is services and support to cycling they could have. 20 000 cyclists have happily given the funding to the PPA , and they have been able to provide services to cyclists - in a restricted area. Now we have a unified body national we need to fund and support it. Then bitch and moan it they do not perform.
  17. Which sport do you want to look at ? Every sport has the same structure and rules, tennis, hockey, rugby, cricket, swimming, Pigdeon racing, show jumping, Endurance horse riding, snooker, darts, Karate, wrestling and Boxing. Why should cycling be a special case?
  18. If you run the comrades, take part in any sport competition , be it tennis, golf, hockey, rugby, cricket, Karate, gymnastics, squash snooker or darts you have to belong to a club. Why does it irk for cycling?
  19. The sooner they are implemented the better. Cycling has been the "Odd man out"in sport in SA for far to long. Al last every cyclist who wants to partake in organised cycling will to belong to a club and contribuite to the provential and national bodies. A great step forward.
  20. Not in the case of a Vertical axis turbine, Lift or more correctly Torque is generated throughout the rotation of the aerofoil
  21. They always do this to me, we have two events in the area on the same Day. Now I have a choice between Pedallers "Challenging route" and a 70km flat ride at the Louis Trichardt Air Force Base. I had hernia Surgery on Thursday but the "Challenging route" is very tempting. I think that I may just show support for Colin's big gesture. <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
  22. It is possible to get "lift" from an aerofoil , like a yacht sail or a subject that I am looking at at present, wind Turbines. This site site explains the concept a bit http://club.cycom.co.uk/vertAxis.html . However it would be impossible to get "Lift" from a symetrical object like a bike wheel.
