  2. Here is waht you need to do to avoid those potholes at 4:30 am Mark them clearly. A litre of paint is a lot cheaper than a rim or even a tire.
  3. Nah, you do your own dirty work. It is really effective though, and has a positive side effect. Road authorities get jolted into doing repairs.
  4. I also have done most of my training in the dark before sunrise. I use a cat-eye HL-EL320 front and LD 1000 at the back. which certainly help. The potholes got another treatment. As I also ride the same route every day I invested in 5 litre of white road marking paint and a 200mm paint roller. The Potholes on my training route all have a white strip 200 mm wide and 20 metre long in front of them !!
  5. If Cycling an create jobs and tourism in Scotland , why not in SA? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/south_of_scotland/7257427.stm The Guy in Pink2008-02-24 08:39:32
  6. There is another way ... Motorists can just wait patiently for cyclists to move on before attempting to pass them. It happens here in Suriname. Motorists never get upset or impatient, and wait patiently for cyclists and pedestrians. When I arrived back here last week it took some time to get out of the bad SA motoring habits. In one incident last I assumed that two pedestrians would wait for my car to pass before stepping across they road in front of me. They had expected me to stop and wait for them as is normal here. I got some angry looks. In SA they would have recieved a blast from the hooter, and a wave with less than five fingers. I know which country I prefereto drive a car or ride a bicycle in. This is it. It will take a massive education program is SA to get to the stage where motorists are the second class citizens of the roads, but if it ever happens SA will be paradise.
  7. The older you get the more warm up you need. I tested the effect of proper warm up a few years ago on a bicycle ergo-meter on several of my friends. The difference between cold and properly warmed up was up to 30% more power for the same heart rate. average rider was over 20% for everyone.
  8. Yep Chilling at Home in SA. "Our site agent is on standby to return immediately pending resolution of ....."
  9. Early shift is a bummer - right?
  10. Way back when it was important to know your ratio's. Then we only had 5 cogs on the back and usually 48/52 in front. We took a lot of time deciding on which five to use before a race, and was useful to know which ones were duplicated. Everyone knew their ratio's .. Today with 10 on the back and 53/39 in front there is always capacity to spare. Not important to know the ratio anymore.
  11. A Few More from Nickerie The Ziekenhuise (Hospital) Bell Tower. Another Home
  12. Here are a few from the small town of Nickerie where I am living. A simple home, (Almost all houses are double story s the bottom floor can be flooded) A Drug lords Palace A upper class home A Nice place The Hotel wher I stay.
  13. I very much doubt it. Our local Traffic cops have no knowledge of the law, and react with incredulous puzzlement when told of it's existence. <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> .... perhaps it they were told of the potential of the law to increase their bride take they would take more interest ....
  14. Then do not upgrade. If you happly spin at 110rpm on a 175mm crank do not do the change unless you can get the right lenght. A Prettier colour in the wrong length crank is not much of an upgrade IMHO
  15. How tall are you? Do you spin or push big gears? If you are happy with 175mm why do you want to change?
  16. Depends on your height, disipline and riding style. Height : short guys would use a shorter crank, tall a longer one . On the road that will be 170mm to 177.5mm normally, with 172.5mm being most popular. Sprinters prefer a shorter crank, climbers a longer one. For Time Trials cranks longer cranks coupled with chain rings with not much difference in size (48 & 50 tooth) are useful, and a normal crank on the track would be 165mm. Tandems usually push bigger gears so can use a 180mm crank to advantage . Us older guys also benefit from a longer crank so I have 180mm cranks although I am only just over 6 foot.
  17. This morning my left pedal bearing ceased 50km into my ride, although it was 7:30am in the morning here , it was 12:30pm Saturday morning at home, and the bike shop, Cycle Centre Louis Trichardt, would be closed before the wife could get there. My wife leaves to-morrow (Sunday) morning for the airport to come here to South America for a visit. I phoned Mohammed and asked him to deliver a pair of pedals to my house. No questions, it was done, and payment will be sorted out when I get home for Christmas. Well done Mohammed!

  23. The youngest is 19, right now Kath has 3/4 with her. Our Eldest came home from London for her 30th Birthday, goes back Sunday. The 21 year old Daughter arrived this week from Durban where she is studing. Another lad is working in Jhb. a whole Tribe. The Londonite commutes to work by bike which saves her a whole hour a day and 23 pound a week. I bought her a cateye LD1000 rear and El 320 front lite to take back (Amazing what you can do from 10000Km away)
