  1. How much is the set?
  2. Sharing some pics of a wheel set I've just completed. 1180g for the set, with tape and valves installed. 30mm inner width, asymmetrical 29er rims Bladed Pillar spokes and black brass nipples 140kg system weight limit The spoke holes are molded, not drilled, so even though they're light, they're strong. These are not just super-light, fragile race-day wheels. I've told the customer he can use these everyday with no worries. Pretty, no?
  3. I have no solution for you, so I'm writing simply to offer commiserations... Finding some NOS spokes and nipples may be your best bet.
  4. Some hubs simply chow bearings. Slightly poor tolerances and incorrect preload will wear bearings out. Often there's nothing you can do about it. If your bearings last a year, that's considered acceptable. I rode a set of Hope Pro4 hubs for over 15 000km before any bearings needed changing, and then it wasn't even all of them...
  5. You asked for it... 1290g for the set, with tape and valves. 160kg system weight limit. 23mm inner width x 50mm deep profile. Glossy, UD finish with solid black graphics under clearcoat. 36t star ratchet freehub mechanism I really loved every minute of this build. Enjoy the photos.
  6. Incl shipping and tax that Hunt wheelset mentioned comes in at around R27 600. I can build a wheelset with Nextie's incredible hubs and their 25mm ID or 29mm ID gravel rims in depths between 30mm and 60mm, with lightweight bladed spokes and black brass nipples, including delivery for around R24k. Max system weight of 150kg. Wheelset weight between 1200 and 1400g depending on the rim model. @splat I'm more than happy to put together some specific options for you to look at.
  7. A set of gravel wheels I have just finished assembling. Can't wait to see this bike all built up with the Lefty...
  8. There are not many new hand-built wheel options anymore under R10k for the set, but this is one of them. Stan's now has their Arch S2 rims available in SA, and paired with very solid Cure XC4 hubs and double butted spokes, these wheels are great quality and offer excellent value for money. The rims are not offset like the Stan's Mk4 rims, and are a bit heavier, but have the same 28mm inner width as the Arch Mk4 version - meaning they work well for 2.2 - 2.5" tubeless-ready tyres. And yes, non-boost hubs are available for those of us still riding older bikes.
  9. It's not you, it's me. I've tried to send wheels with tyres on (once) and it cost almost double! Lesson learned I guess.
  10. If you take off the tyres and pack them into a box of 63x63x24cm it should be around R300 with The Courier Guy or Fastway.
  11. Ya it's about R280-300 each way at the moment to send a wheel set...
  12. Disc wheels need at least 24 spokes per wheel, and definitely not radially laced.
  13. A pretty "unique" set of wheels I've just had the pleasure of putting together... PINK hubs and 29" 359 Vibrocore rims from Spank. Double butted spokes and black brass nipples. Yes, I know the freehub is missing - this is because I'll install the right one needed by the buyer to suit his or her cassette 👍 You know - for when your existing wheels don't match your bike, your riding style or your personality These are available for purchase on my website if anyone's interested.
  14. Or @David Marshall in Kyalami
  15. Those black and gold wheels ended up on this bike... Pretty cool 'eh?
  16. There are some nice options available locally at good prices, in addition to what's already mentioned above. Cure XC4 hubs are brilliant and bulletproof, and around R1800 for the rear hub, or R3000 for the set: This is what I'd go for if I had to spend my own money on an older bike. Spares readily available, solid freehub mechanism with individually-sprung pawls and standard size sealed cartridge bearings.
  17. 32" wheels huh? Yup, I can already source 32" rims if required... getting the right length spokes might be interesting...
  18. Recently I was commissioned to build a 29er wheelset for a singlespeed bike that a customer was putting together, and had painted black and gold. The brief was: Light rims, but in alloy not carbon Gold nipples and valves Excellent value for money with reliable, reputable parts Here's the result. Hope Pro4 hubs on Stan's Crest Mk4 rims, laced with Pillar PBA1420 bladed spokes and gold nipples. I used nice Panzer gold anodized valves. 1620 wheelset weight. Enjoy.
  19. Lightest MTB rim in the world? Nextie has just launched their lightest 29er MTB rim ever, at 245g. Instead of drilling holes for spokes and valves, they are molding the holes, to prevent structural implications from drilling. This not only saves weight but also improves durability. With bladed spokes, brass nipples and Nextie's Rollingstar II hubs, it's now possible to build a wheelset weighing less than 1150g. I'll be offering these as an option for custom wheel builds from now on. Pricing is expected to be around R10k per rim, but this is TBC.
  20. Yes I do - it's like a false axle. Here's a pic.
  21. 24h rim to a 32h hub? I'm keen to hear how you laced that one up. Did you skip every 3rd spoke hole on the hub?
  22. In the old days the spoke hols in the hubs were inconsistent sizes or oversized, or the hub flanges were not at ideal angles. Or spokes had variable thicknesses. The spoke washers helped the spokes seat more evenly in the spoke holes. Today's hub and spoke tolerances are incredibly good, so we don't need spoke head washers. In 10 years of building wheels I've never felt the need to use them. Maybe @David Marshall can also weigh in here?
  23. It's been a "weird hub week" here in Wilderness... 2x electric hub motors built onto new rims. A dynamo hub front wheel build A Lefty hub front wheel build
  24. I have thousands of alloy nipples in my workshop. Specifically, the silver anodized squorx ones that come with DT Swiss rims. The thing is though, the alloy nipples stay in the workshop while the wheels leave after being assembled with brass 😆
