  1. Just finished up with these. 240g carbon XC rims on very light 230g straightpull hubs. The rider is putting these on a non-boost 29er MTB for gravel duty. 1090g for the wheelset with tape and valves installed. Had the Italian flag colour decals custom-made too. I love how people can just get exactly what they want in a custom wheel set.
  2. 30mm deep, 23mm inner width - really in that sweetspot. Notice the small ridges inside the rim cavity - this apparently makes the rim stronger, almost like corrugations in cardboard.
  3. Just sharing a few pics of my most recent build. Alloy Jetset AR-23 gravel rims on the new ED-GE straightpull hubs. I used Pillar PBA1420 bladed spokes to keep the weight down, and black brass DSN nipples for durability. Approx 1690g wheelset and tubeless-ready with 23mm inner width rims. Great for gravel or a robust disc brake road option. All for under R12k, hand-built and delivered.
  4. Maybe it's time for a "Tyre insert buyer's guide" for my website. I've supplied my customers with Panzer, Vittoria, cSixx, Cushcore. Personally I'm torn between using inserts and not. I don't use them myself, and rely on line choice and tyre pressure to save my rims, but I'm not too rowdy of a rider anymore. Let me know if you're interested in a comprehensive comparison article, and I may put one together similar to what I did with gravel tyres a while back (https://wheelbuilder.co.za/buyers-guide-gravel-tyres/)
  5. I get these from H-Works in Xiamen, China. They're awesome quality and well priced.
  6. Nothing wrong with doing it on a hardtail - done it myself. And Sani and J2C. And singlespeed. Ride what you got, but ride.
  7. Certainly the most elegant solution I've seen to try and repair dings in the rim edge. The dings themselves are cosmetic unless they prevent tubeless sealing, or if it's really bad and the rim bed has a dent, also preventing sealing. The other issue is that when you bend alloy "back" it weakens that area. Also if the impact was hard enough, it could flat-spot the rim, making it impossible to fix.
  8. Once an alloy rim has a dent in it, it's very difficult to fix. That's what makes carbon amazing for rims - no dents and never gets "bent". This allows you to straighten wobbly rims with spoke tension adjustments alone. Hit something too hard though, and you will break 'em.
  9. Cost is much less important than competency. I'm expensive because you don't pay me for time but for experience and expertise. To rebuild a wheel I charge R850, excluding parts. Good quality double butted spokes cost around R30 each, including nipples. And I'm in George, so factor in courier costs if you'd like to send me your wheel 🤑
  10. I'd be happy to help. If your nipples are breaking, your spokes are too short. If you've broken more than 2 spokes on the same wheel, your spokes all need replacing because they're fatigued and will all eventually break. What rims do you have? You're welcome to PM me or shoot me a WhatsApp on 083 452 871 six.
  11. I hope not! But this year I’ve struggled to find decent rim brake rims and hubs. It’s a problem for guys who have great rim brake bikes and want to keep them running or upgrade them.
  12. I’m already struggling to source proper rims and hubs for rim brake bikes. Save yourself a headache and get a disc brake bike.
  13. Yes they do bring in special orders - sometimes can be quick, sometime you wait a while.
  14. Ja, suppliers know best - so much so that I had to import a set of alloy rim brake road rims in 20h and 24h for a straightforward build I need to do for a customer. Ludicrous.
  15. Did you guys know that you can paint carbon rims? Nextie, my regular carbon rim supplier, sent me this photo to show what's possible. 50mm deep rims, 24mm inner width, 360g per rim. Pretty, no? These rims are called "Ripple" and have a wavy "ridge" below the rim edge to break up airflow and make the rim more aerodynamic and improve crosswind handling. Currently only 1 set of these blue rims exists in the whole world and I can get hold of them if anyone's interested.
  16. When it comes to singlespeeding, there are no sins. Except riding gears.
  17. I have loads of nice double butted Wheelsmith 266mm silver spokes. WhatsApp me and I'll send you some. Just pay for PUDO. 083 452 871 six
  18. Someone who would appreciate the old school steel frame and almost-vintage parts might love the chance to own and ride it, or convert it to a singlespeed maybe. If it was mine, I'd list it with some nice photos for sale for R2500 and see how it goes.
  19. I would use longer spokes for the front wheel - too little thread engagement can cause the spokes to rip the threads from the nipples. Ideally you want the end of the spoke to reach the top of the slot in the nipple head. Are your new spokes silver or black? (I may have some lying around)
  20. Something quite unbelievable - not one importer in South Africa has alloy rim brake road rims in 20h / 24h in stock. Not Mavic, DT Swiss, or any big or small brand. With the number of rim brake bikes still in circulation this really surprises me. I have found a source in the UK, but obviously the shipping almost kills the viability of bringing in a set. Am I missing a supplier? I'm building a set of wheels for a customer and already have a gorgeous set of hubs - straightpull and very light. (same as pictured)
  21. Another world-cup-light 29er XC wheelset has just been born in the workshop. This time it's an all-black affair, with bladed spokes, brass nipples and Nextie's Rollingstar II hubs and Alpha 36S 245g, 30mm inner width XC rims. Coming in at around 1170g, these are race-day light but everyday durable. Enjoy the pics.
  22. I'm launching a new brand of wheelsets in the new year. Watch this space.
  23. A lot. 👍 Happy to chat through some options with you.
