  1. I've just finished up this build - my lightest set of 29er wheels ever! 1070g wheelset. 29er, BOOST, carbon XC wheels. 30mm inner width and 150kg max system weight rated. Sorry about the poor photos - my proper camera went "missing".
  2. I recently moved house, and somewhere along the way my trusty Nikon DSLR was removed from my possession. It's the camera I used to get the really nice pics of all my wheel builds, and my old iPhone just doesn't give me enough control to get the shots I need. If you have, or know of anyone who has a DSLR of any vintage, in either Nikon or Pentax, that needs a new home for not a lot of money, please let me know. I'm equally happy to exchange some wheel building and/or parts in exchange. Thanks in advance hubbers!
  3. Today's modern carbon rims are incredibly strong - for example, the 50mm deep rims in the pictures are rated for a max system weight of 160kg, yet each rim weighs only 335g and is ASTM 3 rated. This is with 24 spokes. Gone are the days where we need 36 spokes and heavy alloy rims for bigger riders.
  4. Hi Ferdi, I'd be happy to assist with some options. I'll message you.
  5. I've been importing rims and hubs for custom wheel builds from Nextie since 2018 and they've been incredible to work with. Last month I had the opportunity to bring in one of their gravel frames and build a bike for a customer who had ordered wheels from me. He chose the "Gobi Grey" colourway. The frames come with axles, hanger, fork, seatpost, headset and slightly flared integrated bar/stem combo. The quality and fit/finish is superb. The customer supplied the GRX Di2 drivetrain and Vittoria Terreno 47c tyres. I built the wheels, sourced the other small parts and assembled the bike for him. Wow, it came out so nicely! If anyone's on the fence about importing a Chinese gravel bike frame, rest assured that these are awesome. (+/- R20k for frame, fork, bar etc. if I import for you) Enjoy the photos.
  6. There are so many options today, and your budget will determine whether you buy an off-the-shelf bike or have something built up, custom. I recently built the wheels and put together this Nextie gravel bike for a customer, with 47c wide tyres. I imported the rims, hubs and frame from China. All-in it cost less than R80k with the new GRX Di2 drivetrain and really nice carbon wheels. Fully integrated brake hoses and 1-piece bar/stem. The bike weighed in around 8.5kg without pedals. (with that massive 10-51t cassette) Perfect machine for gravel racing and long-distance adventures.
  7. Here we go. The bike is finally finished, except for bottle cages.
  8. Only the 25mm ID XR391 and 30mm ID XM481 available currently in SA. Otherwise buy a Stan's Flow Mk4 or Flow EX3 and remove the decals from all rims
  9. Brake discs finally arrived - pics of the complete bike to follow soon!
  10. I’m still waiting for the rotors and pedals to arrive, but here’s a decent shot of the whole bike.
  11. Yes indeed 👍🏻
  12. At today's exchange rate, around R22k for frame, fork, bar/stem, headset, seatpost, clamp, thru-axles
  13. WhatsApp me on 083 452 8716 You're in for around R20-28k, depending on options. I just built a set for this gravel bike at 1220g with 40mm deep rims for around R24k.
  14. Plenty of good options out there. My most popular lightweight combination at the moment is the following: - 280g carbon Nextie rims - Nextie Rollingstar II hubs - Light bladed spokes and black brass nipples - Including assembly (by me), rim tape and valves - Nationwide delivery - Around 1200g wheelset weight +/- R24k Save R2000 by opting for heavier hubs. Or add R2000 by opting for the Alpha36S rims and get under 1100g (pictured with silver hubs)
  15. I reckon if they didn't add the attachment bosses it would limit some people's intended use.
  16. Officially it has clearance for 47c tyres, but with the frame I'm working on, I can see there's clearance for at least 50c tyres. Actual width between the narrowest part of the chainstays is 60mm. 70mm width in the fork. It can take up to 48t single chainring and any standard double chainset. Frame weighs around 1150g with 520g fork.
  17. Ceramic bearings are snake oil. Especially the cheap ones. Rather buy decent steel bearings.
  18. I've been importing and building wheels with Nextie rims and hubs since 2018, and they've been brilliant. Finally I've had the opportunity to try one of their new gravel frames, busy putting it together for a customer. The frames ship with thru-axles, headset, seatpost and clamp, integrated bar/stem, fork, UDH and headset. It's set up for full internal hose and cable routing. I'm busy building the bike with: GRX Di2 1x12 groupset Nextie CGX 40mm deep, 25mm inner width wheels (1220g before tyres) Selle Italia seat Vittoria tyres Some initial images. Enjoy.
  19. My customer gave me a wild brief. 65mm deep, 25mm inner width carbon gravel wheels in glossy finish and bright white graphics. Here's the result
  20. Ah, I kinda miss my old On-One Inbred. I had the same frame - sold the bike back in 2015 or 2016. What does yours weigh in at as-built? Watch those Crest Mk3 rims - almost every single one ends up with cracks at the spoke holes.
  21. Thanks for the shout-out. I agree with most - keep the SLX brakes. If they ain’t broken, don’t fix em. If you want better braking power, get new pads and better rotors. A wheel upgrade will be your best investment (not only because I’m a wheel builder). With new wheels you could even keep your NX shifters and derailleur and upgrade to a GX cassette which will save weight and get you the 10t small cog. Invest in the electronic shifting later. A set of wheels with good hubs and carbon rims can weigh as little as 1200g, saving probably 600-700g on your current wheels. This will be the most noticeable difference. When it comes to wheels, get the best you can afford. Don’t pay R20k for a 1600g set when R25k can get you a 1200g set.
  22. That’s why I asked. Those silver alloy nips that come with the DT rims are horrible. I probably have 2000 of them in my box.
  23. About 420g for hubs. 500g per rim 336g for spokes and nipples = 1756g (ish)
  24. Lekker Dave! Are you using the nipples that ship with the rims?
  25. Just finished this gravel wheelset: - Hope Pro5 hubs - DT Swiss GR531 rims - DT Swiss Competition double butted spokes - Pillar black brass DSN nipples Not ultralight, but other than that, as perfect an alloy wheelset as you can get.
