  1. Hey guys, So a little while back I posted pics of the '88 Cicli Zini (Reynolds 525) with full Shimano 600 Tri-Color Groupset which I bought, and am in process of restoring. However, I think the bug's bitten, because I find myself checking each and every paws shop, old school bike shops, messy backyards, adverts etc... yup, there goes all my savings Hahaa. So, I picked up this old girl this week, and am so excited + she's my size. Specs and details herewith (photos attached), and would appreciate any additional info or comments Frame: Le Turbo - no decals of type of tubing, but I guess Reynolds 500 or 501 (also think probably early 80's, around '84) Handlebar and Stem: Belleri St Etienne (France) Brake Levers and Calipers: Modolo Corsa (Italy) Downtube Shifters: Simplex Front Derailleur: Suntour Sunrace Rear Derailleur: Simplex SX630 (Bernard Hinault) Hubs & Skewers: Maillard (France) Cassette: Maillard Atom 77 6 Speed (France) Crankset: Gipiemme Azzurro (Italy) Front Rim: Ambrosio Elite Rear Rim: Mavic (thinking the original was probably Ambrosio - but got damaged and replaced by Mavic) Saddle: Selle Italia Mundialita Sadly no pedals, was the same with the Zini - now hunting down Shimano 600 and Gipiemme pedals
  2. Thank you for advise Loose cog- especially re. hobby paint for touch-up - great idea.
  3. Thank you for advise Kamaalo - also thinking of keeping it all original. Will post an update once done.
  4. Hi Everyone, After having followed this thread for a very long time, I have today bought my first real classic steel bike (picked up at a pawn shop), apart from those like a Cosmos, Peugeot and Le Jeune I owned when I was much younger. It's a late eighties, early nineties Cicli Zini Campione Mark 2 (62cm centre BB / Top Tube) built with Reynolds 525 tubing (probably built by Gotty Hansen), full Shimano 600 group set (7 speed) and Mavic Open 4CD rims on Shimano 600 hubs. Mostly original parts, except for saddle and pedals, with original paint and decals. Typical paint chips and scuff marks for a bike circa 20 to 25 years of age. Bought it for R1k. Got a couple of questions though. Do I fully restore (repaint), or keep as original, with a good clean-up, service and touch-up here and there. Also, is it possible to re-anodize the Mavic rims, or does one leaf as is, which adds to the patina. Your feedback and help will be kindly appreciated - really excited to get started with my project. Herewith some photos....
  5. If memory serves correct, Hennie Wentzel took over the Le Jeune brand with the factory situated on the Bottelary Road between Brackenfell and Kuilsrivier, Cape Town. Le Jeune was sold through Peter Allan cycles in Belville late 80's, early 90's. Bought my first brand new frame (Le Jeune - Reynolds 531c) from Peter Allan early 90's. Would give my left "toe" to have that frame back today...
  6. Dear All, I'm an absolute bike and cycling history nut, and want to get more into classic / retro steel bike restorations. Been doing a lot of reading and research, but need some more info on a specific bike I can now purchase, as I found very little info available on the net and within various forums. The bike is a late 70s, early 80s Armstrong by Raleigh SA, with the head tube badge stating "Armstrong, Springs, South Africa" Has a Milremo Stem, handlebar and hubs, Weinman Type 730 brake set, Simplex front derailleur (rear derailleur and coterless rank set not original), Brooks saddle, Shimano Altus downtube shifters, some French make pedals. On the top tube it states GT, with paint and decals being original - photos attached. The seller wants R3000, and I would like to know whether this is something worth purchasing and restoring, and whether it holds any historic / classic value, or whether it's only a mass produced version of a Raleigh. Any info and help much appreciated...
