  1. Haven't trained so il do the 10k fun ride LOL. Is the route for the 10k the same as the summer fast one?
  2. Was a nice race but the marshall in the silver/grey Mahindra bakkie at 7km directed a few of the 10 km riders incorrectly down the opposite way of where we were supposed to go saying we started in the wrong batch. I was confused as there was only 1 batch for 10k riders so I just carried on going at full speed down a sketchy path through the veld, I was in 5th place at the time and I could see the 4 riders up front somewhere but due to the long grass didn't see I was on a completely wrong path to them and the marshall didn't bother stopping us so I just carried on. Ended up doing an additional 3.6 km and ended 95th overall, according to my watch my average speed was 19.4km/h so I should have gotten 6th overall but my own fault for just going balls to wall and not paying attention. Better luck on the next one I guess LOL
  3. Awesome, will pop past on my way home from work to register. Thank you
  4. Hi, when can we collect entries/race number etc if we entered online? Want to try and avoid queues on the day if possible and how hectic is the traffic getting into the venue on the day? I stay about 5 mins away, was planning to cycle there but the wife wants to come with to show some support so will be coming with the car and I hate sitting in traffic LOL.
  5. Awesome thanks bud. Havent done a MTB race in years so looking forward to doing the fun ride and maybe getting back into sport and working on fitness for the longer rides.
  6. Sorry for the dof question, but venue, is this by Randwater just off Klipriver road in Alberton? You pass by Sundowners go towards the cemetery? Keen on entering this one
  7. I also suffer PF, developed it after running my first and so far only half marathon in August this year in cheap mr price shoes, had run a few 5 and 10k's with no issues so I thought they were fine to use but clearly not. The PF is the whole reason I started mountain biking. All I can say is when there is pain, its very painful. The pain comes and goes, more painful when I wake up and start walking than when running and yes I am still running but nothing more than 5km at an easy pace for now until its healed. So long as I stretch and warm up before a run and don't try push too hard, its all good. Also wearing over the counter orthotics as I have a very high arch which also seems to help. I have been doing some research and came across a thing called a strassburg sock, cant find them anywhere so I made my own one, been wearing for the past 2 nights and I can feel a noticeable improvement when I get up in the morning or during the night, I feel almost no pain at all but as the day goes by, if I sit for long periods, the pain comes back when I stand up and then as I walk a bit and the foot loosens up it goes away. I must confess I have not been icing the foot as much as I should lately, but I have been taking anti inflammatory meds on and off and that also seems to work a bit. Is running prolonging the healing process? I ask because with the easy running my foot does seem to getting better slowly, can I continue to do easy running or is it better to stop completely until its healed? My wife is a fanatical runner and never misses a training session or race so the running is more for her benefit than mine at this stage until I am fully healed.
  8. Ok haven't read all of this thread, but I have been working in the medical aid industry for 11 years now. Heard some hectic stories of Govt hospitals. So long as I can afford it, I will def belong to a med aid. Oh and I saw a post somewhere above asking about discovery plan changes. Word of advice, shop around at other schemes, discovery prices vs benefits are not that great at all. Fedhealth and Bonitas have just launched similar wellness programs to discoverys vitality so they are 2 good ones to look at. Bonitas is second largest to med aid in SA .. And no I don't work for Bonitas and not pushing their product LOL.
  9. LOL renting a 1 bed cottage which is actually the cheapest I could find, still saving up a dep to buy a place but eish at the rate property prices are going up, it wont be any time soon. Wife has set a budget for me or I would go overboard LOL
  10. LOL no doubt there are some really good second hand bargains out there. Thanks and apologies if I ask any stupid questions, I am very new to MTB'ing. I am currently on a cheapy 26 inch bike. I have seen loads of second hand 26 inch bikes for sale well within my budget, however ive skipped over them in favour of a bigger wheeled bike because being a newby, I thought bigger will be better, I do understand bigger gives more stability but I stand to learn more about that LOL. What is the major differences between 26,27.5 and 29 inch besides wheel size and prices?
  11. Thanks guys, appreciate, I stay near Rietvlei and Thaba trails, Love riding thaba trails, they have an awesome trail. Will def save up a bit more and look at the second hand ones. I think im leaning towards as 27.5, done some research and it seems to be the ideal inbetween bike. Im not the tallest person, 174cm so a I think a 27.5 would be a better choice. Also on down hill speed and low gearing for inclines, the gearing would make a more significant influence than wheel size or am I incorrect in saying that?
  12. Hi guys, I am new to the MTB scene, did my first 10km race (Caxton angels in need MTB challenge at RideFree Bike Park in Modderfontein Edenvale). Absolutely had a blast, ended up coming in 4th in my category and 9th overall in a time of 48:42 riding on a cheapy Totem 26 inch mountain bike I paid R999 for at Makro. The lady who came in just in front of me looked to be riding a full carbon fibre 29er and the 3rd place guy in my category was less than 30 seconds in front of me. The only reason I bought the bike was to follow my wife when she does her running training ( we are more marathon runners) but I injured my foot so im not doing any long distance training at the moment. I was missing doing races so I decided to try a mountain bike race and I am now hooked on mountain biking. I now would like to upgrade to a better MTB, I have a budget of R3000-5000 (will have to save a bit more to reach the R5000 though) What would the more experienced riders suggest? Went to look at the Raleigh bikes from Makro but they not really a big step up from the cheapy I currently have LOL so I don't want to go that route even though it fits into my budget. Also considering the entry level Titans from sportsmans warehouse maybe. Thanks guys
