  1. That is true ????????
  2. Nope... you’ll have to find yourself an 11 speed road derailleur to play nicely with Shimano road shifters. Interestingly, you could have used a Shimano 9 speed MTB shifter with 9 speed road components, but after the road stuff went to 10 speed, it doesn’t seem compatible. Sramm stuff works together though..!
  3. Hi guys, I'm looking for a set of those cable to hydraulic calipers for a gravel build... anyone got? Also considering a full hydraulic road shifter upgrade if anyone has a groupset lying around surplus to requirement! And a fairly fresh 29er wheelset (through axle). I'm tinkering with my gravel grinder and building one for a mate, so am looking for quite a few bits and pieces.
  4. A little lockdown build of mine. Gen 1 Momsen STR with a bit of a sprayjob. Cyclocross fork sorted the geometry out quite nicely but yes... I am quite lanky and that seatpost still needs to go up high . Oh, don't need a seatpost clamp as the alloy seems well and truly bonded to the steel frame. Steel weight weenie, now there's an oxymoron! This may have been covered before, but does anyone have experience of those cable to hydraulic disk brake calipers? I'm trying to work out a reasonable (less than R8000) hydraulic braking solution). Any advice would be appreciated.
  5. Here is my Gen 1 STR after a little spray job and gravel conversion... So comfy!
  6. Sjoe... I'm busy converting my V1 STR frame (which was a nice SS gathering dust) to a nice gravel tourer as that seems to be what me and my mates are doing more of these days. Overnight bikepacking tours with 100ish km gravel days. Definitely seems to be something that is gaining popularity, but there are not many options for steel gravel frames locally. I have been riding an alloy Specialized Tri-Cross which I picked up in the UK but it was hard as a goat's knee on anything but a super-smooth surface. Looking forward to the compliance that I know the STR will give me, but would like the option of being able to pick up a slightly lighter, more gravel specific steel frame. In an XL! Just looking for a carbon rigid fork to finish my build, then I'll post a pic.
  7. Is that an eBay fork? How do you find it? I'm looking for a rigid carbon fork and have been battling to find one locally... everyone's out of stock!
  8. A Narrow/Wide ring would obviously be ideal, but they’re hard to come by in the current climate. I’m keen to try a ramped ring if need be with a chain guide/derailleur as a guide.
  9. Hey chaps, I’m doing a 1X gravel build and am looking for a 42T Chainring. I had some after converting to a 34T single ring on an old 2X crank but I tossed them! I’m in Durbs so would prefer local, but happy to pay postage.
  10. Cleaned her up a bit. Beautiful bike under it all! The original sparkly metallic Aubergine is very cool too. Fork could do with a re-chrome as the chrome is peeling in places but for now we’ll call it ‘patina’. Serviced the rear hub that was a bit wobbly, pumped up the tyres... happy days. Downtube shifters will stay. I want to see if I can fit them to the cable stop bosses. Brooks saddle migrated over from the gravel grinder. Shifterless brakes are on order. New 25mm tyres will finish her off nicely. Seatpost is still stuck, but I’m easing penetrating oil in there everyday and riding her without a clamp bolt so hopefully the post will pop at some point. Well-chuffed!
  11. Thanks guys, yup... I do quite like the downtube shifters! Think I will get some simple brake levers to tidy things up ????. Thanks again for the advice!
  12. Sorry @mahleu! It really is a cool bike. Tks @bikebloke, I’ll give those things a try ????
  13. Interesting, got a fairly prompt response from the factory informing me that is a 1996 model, made from Vanadium steel produced by a company called Oria (as opposed to Reynolds etc). So not as old as I thought... a practical classic. My research says that Miguel Indurain was the last steel frame riding Tour de France winner in 1994. Interestingly, Pantani won on an aluminium Bianchi in 1996, but after that it was all carbon. So the 8sp Shimano 105 Groupset is probably correct. The down tube shifters look to have been fitted when the brifters packed up. Anyone got a working set of 8sp 105 brifters going begging?! Fork could do with a rechrome, but the metallic aubergine paint job with chrome chain stays is pretty good. Seatpost seems siezed... any ideas? All in all, very chuffed with my R699 Cash Converters buy!
  14. Good idea. I have mailed them... will wait and see!
  15. Hi guys I'm new to this forum, have a few bikes but picked up my first vintage bike today (I did have a Hansom road bike in the early 90s when I was still at school!). So today's purchase is a Faggin (Palermo I think... the decal is a little worn). I'd like to find out what year it was produced in and perhaps what components it might have come with. It is sporting a mish-mash of Shimano 105 cranks, brakes and brifters but has the down-tube shifters (Shimano). It has a set of Rigido DP18 rims which look interesting and sella setapost and stem. I'll try to post a pic Any info would be greatly appreciated!
  16. Here’s one a mate and I put together this last week. Was a single speed gathering dust in the garage... Momsen Str steel 29er frame 105 11 speed Groupset Carbon rigid fork XT Cranks Brooks saddle Rapide gravel bars
  17. My Kalahari Ferrari, Momsen STR built with bits and pieces in the garage. I can see why lots of peeps say they ride their single speed more than their geared bikes... Too much fun!
  18. Thank you Danger Dassie, that's exactly the kind of feedback I'm after! Will get hold of one from somewhere to try out if possible. Any ideas where I could do that in Durbs? Will phone the listed dealers and see what gives. Ciao
  19. Hmmmmm.... You see that's what I'm thinking. My 2006 khs xc204 (that I paid $180 for) powder coated black gets a lot of attention. Lots of people want to know what it is. Granted, I do have Fox shocks and a decent Wheelset on her but I'm super-comfortable on her and maybe part of the fun is knowing that I put her together for 1/2 or 1/3 of the price of some of the bikes I'm easing past up and down the hills. Just not easing past too many of my mates on 29ers these days but don't have a spare R30k lying around :-( Think the Axis could be my horse...
  20. Hi folks The Axis A10 29er looks like a really good deal. Has anyone actually ridden one? Any idea of weight? I saw some chaps shouting that they'd rather pay more for a 'quality' frame and that the ergonomics might not be that great etc but has anyone actually ridden one? Would appreciate some reliable feedback.
