HI Eddie Can you contact me with more info on who you dealt with in getting this info. Yes it is true we do not carry every Mavic item - their catalogue is massive, but we can usually accommodate special orders with our air freights every 4-6 weeks - on the rims we currently still have old stock (non UST version) as aftermarket rims are not big sellers it is not something we would bring in as a stock item if there was no demand - but can definitely get on special order for you. but yeah if you can give me some info on who you dealt with i would appreciate it my mail is gavins@dragons.co.za

Hey V12 man Not completely in the know on Enduro Moto tyres, but at 65 pounds for Michelin Moto enduro tyres (are these good tyres?) and 49 euro for Mavic Claw Pro all mountain tyres (this is a good tyre! ) would give (at todays exchange rate) R1228.50 for the Moto vs R823 for the Mtb. Thats just taking RRP from each int website, not sure of distribution,taxes etc so please take my calculations with a pinch of salt - i also know squat all about Moto Enduro (except that its cheaper than Mtb'ing and i should probably rather get a KTM 500 EXC-F than upgrading my mtb) If i remeber correctly from a friend it is cheaper to rebuild a Moto fork than an Mtb fork too!! I am not in disagreement that bicycle pricing is crazy - maybe an economist can explain economy of scale in some depth - the reason two sets of brake pads for my MTB cost more than four sets for my VW caddy - and i still have change for a pie and a coke! Are items for bicycles more expensive to make, probably not, but the R&D team behind these items is probably close on the same size, so smaller sales volume but maybe similar staff costs. all i know is im the chop that orders the stock and then sweats as the exchange rate skyrockets.

Will check on the tax ,not as high as 10% although for the headache of breaking down which wheels come with which tyres and then submitting to SARS they should have actually paid us money Biggest player to pricing has been exchange rate though, R14 in Feb R18 in Aug when the first 2019 items started arriving, so yeah been some interesting 2019 pricing so far. should bought my bike spares in Feb

Technically SARS happened.... they need funds for rubber recycling, or a new government luxury car or summing There was a new levy on tyres implemented last year, affecting all imports on tyres - as most of our wheels come with tyres on them, we now need to break down our invoices to show the tyres and their weight, which is a headache!. its not a massive tax but it all adds up. Exchange rate is also a big player - our current shipment of UST road tyres came in at a Euro exchange of 17.9, Whereas the last shipment in Feb was at 14 to the Euro, that makes quite a big difference on retail price! Distributors always seem to get a bad rap on Bike hub, never completely sure why...I certainly dont think Cool heat has just bumped up the pricing becasue they bought Interac, as seems to have been suggested by some posts... But i share your pain on bike part costs, after stage 1 of the Glacier Storms River Traverse I needed to replace front and rear pads at full retail - and ya, cheaper to put brake pads on my car

HI Furbz Hi-Jack away :-) Thanks for the comment - the R-SYS wheels were originally designed in an era where everything had to be superlight, the wheels were designed as a pure weight weenie/climbing wheel and in its current version is 1295g for the set, making it still one of the lightest alloy clinchers around. At the end of the day wheels are like horses for courses, you will use a deep set of wheels on the flats and faster courses (due to the higher speeds) and a lighter set for hillier courses (given the weight differences are often up to 600g between a good set of medium profile wheels and deep wheels this is a significant reduction for the climbs) With the introduction of the ISM 4D rim the curves of the rim were improved to enhance the aerodynamics (are yours still the square shaped rim?)- since the rim is the first part that hits the air this is the most important area for aerodynamic improvement - no matter what, once the air hits the spokes it will be churned up, Mavics R-SYS front wheel only has 16 spokes and is actually as "aero" as most medium profile wheels with 24 spokes. Given that there is little aero advantage below 33km/h and the wheels provide no aero advantage in the bunch (the big guy on the front does that) - these are the perfect wheels for those days sitting in the bunch waiting for the final climb of the day to attack. These wheels are also incredibly stiff so are pretty useful in a bunch sprint. They would however not be my first choice of wheel to solo break at the start of a 120km flat race!! Mavic

As Cippo states higher up its not just a case of slapping a wider tyre onto any rim, you will change the ride characteristics dramatically by having a mismatched rim to tyre size (including a higher possibility of the tyre blowing off the rim) so unless tyres blowing off your wheels while decending at break neck speed is your thing, rather check out the extra info here to make sure your rims and tyres are compatible for the ride you are looking for. http://engineerstalk.mavic.com/en/the-right-tyre-width-on-the-right-rim-width/ for info on better rolling and pucture resistance check out GCN's video on tubless setup: As a side note on my recent vist to Annecy for the distributor meeting it was interesting to note that all the Yellow neutral service bikes (the ones that Chris Froome doesnt fit on!) are all running 28c

No Worries should have been clear - we can only get Cosmic replacement decals from Mavic, and have only had Cosmic decals made locally.(the cosmic decal has remained reasonably standard over the recent generations). Our local contact has been quite good at doing custom decals so as with danny if you want to contact me on mail i can forward you the details. I am currently in Annecy France for the Mavic distributor meeting, and the service centre here does have more decals than we are able to order (we can only order Cosmic)...if perhaps you have the photos of your wheel that you can send....i can try and rummage through their decal storage and see if they do have my email is gavins@dragons.co.za Regards Mavic

HI Curbie Bummer about the crash! WRT the spokes it would be best to send these wheels in to us via your LBS to have a look at and replace the spokes - we have a specifically calibrated tention meter for the carbon spokes on these wheels to build them back up to factory spec and we then offer a further years warranty on all the parts replaced. regards Mavic

As a distributor I have recently been getting calls more and more for disk brake off-road road wheelsets. It seems roadies are no longer content to stay on the lovely smooth road (ok its SA, so smooth road with the occasional pothole) but are keen to explore the back roads and dirt roads. This "go anywhere" style of riding is becoming the norm in Europe and at our recent distributor meeting in Annecy it is quite evident that most of the roadies are kitted out to get off the beaten path (including the Mavic road segment manager who was riding 35c tyres!!) - orange bike in photo Interestingly Mavics neutral service bikes (like Chris Froome rode in last years Tour de France) are kitted with 28c tyres standard. (the yellow bike in the centre) As it is the time of year where i need to commit to 2018 stock, it would be interesting to get some feedback from the roadies who want to get dirty, but not dirty enough to buy a MTB, specifically what are you looking for in your off-road-road wheels, high end?,lightweight?,durable? etc feel free to post some photos of your road/offroad machines too, I'm interested to see what you are all riding if anyone wants to contact me directly you can get me on gavins@dragons.co.za Regards Mavic

HI Organic the squeal usually comes from the black inner bearing seal becoming dry, a few drops of mineral oil occasionally will stop the noise. If the seal has been dry for a while and has become hard you would need to replace this seal - not crazy expensive though. How old is your freewheel body? there are performance benefits and weight benefits to using a bush rather than a bearing but it does mean a but more servicing to prevent the bush from wearing too soon. if there is movement on the body i would recommend that you replace the body. both items can be ordered by your LBS so no need to send the wheel to us for repair. On the spokes touching this should not happen, i would recommend a trip to your LBS to check all spoke tensions (they should have the Mavic tension chart). HI Mongoose Depending on the wheel model, for cheaper wheels Mavic does not deem it cost effective to replace a hub as it is nearly the cost of a whole wheel...but from mid level wheels upwards we can get hubs - Mavic hubs are notoriously bullet proof though, so we dont keep many in stock - have only replaced a handful of hubs in the last few years. are you looking for a particular hub? you can get me on gavins@dragons.co.za Regards Gavin for Mavic

HI King_Crispy That is not correct, all rims and spokes and bits and pieces can be supplied to stores. We do not supply hubs to stores though. We do however recommend (especially on fore drilled wheels like the SLR that the wheel comes to our service centre for a full rebuild as we have specifically calibrated spoke tension meters for our different wheels and are able to rebuild the wheels back to factory spec). HI mrbaker Although this would have been before my time (I took over Mavic in Feb) I would be interested to get more information on your case so that these delays do not happen again. We are generally up to date with spare parts and when we are out we can get from our supplier every 6 weeks so I am concerned that there seem to be people who have waited many months for spares (generally barring any production delay these spares are usually in stock with us). any more info on this case would be appreciated Best Regards Gavin gavins@dragons.co.za 021 461 6252
