  1. Agree with the rest of the rant' date=' but just a note worth mentioning is that it is against the law to ride in the yellow line, and it is within the law for cyclists to cycle two abreast (although motor vehicles are required to change lanes to overtake), and within the law to cycle anywhere in the left lane. I'm not saying it would be wise, just that it would be lawful. [/quote'] I dont know what law you know, but that is not SA law. I downloaded the law awile ago and i can gaurentee you the law says you have to ride single file. It also says if there is a cycle lane you are not allowed to ride in the road. Google it. I would suggest you not be facetious, particularly when you are in the wrong. The law is pretty simple - a bike, as long as it has a driver/rider, is a vehicle by definition as it is "propelled primarily on wheels". S296 of the Road Regs requires vehicles to keep in the left half of the road and "not encroach on the half of the roadway to his or her right...". A number of other sections provide for how to overtake, always putting the onus on the passing car to ensure it is safe and prudent, and to move to the right half of the road to perform this maneuvre (with a few caveats about multi-lane roads and "undertaking" that aren't relevant). The basic rule is "shall pass to the right thereof at a safe distance and shall not again drive on the left side of the roadway until safely clear of the vehicle so passed". There is no further mention of where a bike is required to ride (other than the left half), although S298A prohibits the driving of a vehicle (including a pedal cycle) on the shoulder with an allowance, not a requirement, to move over to allow passing. S311 provides specifically for bicycles, including the much mentioned (and, in your case and others, misread) subsection (2) which requires cyclist to ride single file except when passing another cyclist. Effectively this gives license to ride two abreast as there is no distinction between passing and riding alongside. I didn't plan to get involved in your little territorial war, but I would suggest that at least 90% of the reaction you get from cyclists is that you seem to believe that your anger is righteous. Perhaps showing a little respect to the cyclists may engender a little respect in return. Most of the photos show nothing illegal, except in cases where the cyclists are more than 2 abreast. Even in these cases, the photo's you took show a solid white line, so passing is illegal there anyway. Cyclists have legal right to use the road, they have the historical right (given that bicycles and roads for them preceded the invention of motorised transport) and obviously the moral right in a world searching for greener methods of transport. Perhaps, but probably not, this article will help you get over yourself: http://www.capetown.gov.za/en/Pages/Bicyclesarelegaltraffictoo.aspx Finally, you did mention a bicycle lane - I don't see any in the pics. I never brought that into my initial point as I referred directly to "riding within the yellow line". There did used to be reference to cycle lanes in one of the guideline docs from the department of Transport a few years ago, but I don't recall it making legislation. In the UK bicycle lanes are compulsory in terms of their code of conduct, but recent case law has seen that section being removed from the highway code. The primary reason is that a cyclist should have a choice to ride wherever on the road he feels safest. That all said, I have no interest in how this issue is resolved, but am concerned that motorists still believe that they have a right to be indignant because their (often illegal) driving behaviour has been slowed for a few seconds, and that cyclists seem to have the ridiculous notion that somehow behaviour of cyclists has any impact on the general perception motorists have of their "absolute" right to the road. http://www.transport.gov.za/library/legislation/road%20traffic%20act.txt The Road Traffic Act 29 of 1989, Section 105 pertains to cyclists and states clearly: Ride in single file, except if overtaking another pedal cycle. Ride on a cycle path and not the road whenever there is a cycle path available . And a whole lot of other stuff There are cycle lanes in the cradle. And you miss the point completly.

  3. Thanks AM I need to stress that i have had a meeting with AM and 2 other cyclists who i believe are committed to solving these issues and I understand there frustrations and they understand mine.We had a good and productive meeting, but then again it was only AM who was interested in sorting the problem out and no other club. See it from my point. This is not a once a month thing. This is an every weekend thing - Saturday and Sunday, and we are not even talking about the races. I would say the majority of the cyclists are not a problem, but drive down the road and come accross 2 or 3 groups who are arrogant and that messes up your whole day. After a while you dread going out, because you know you are going to have a problem. I am not the only one complaining, a lot of residents know what is going on, and are watching to see how far i get, so this needs to be sorted out. Also, cyclists are not the only problem. Motor cycles doing 200km per hr is also a problem. I see it from all sides, as i ride a mountain bike and I ride a motorbike, but it all comes down to respect for the community, respect for fellow road users. Riding at 200km per hr and riding in the middle of the road is not showing resepect. You get what you give. I and the residents are open and want to sort the problem out, but there is no recourse if cyclists do not play the game. If i hit a cyclist irrespective of whose fault it is, i have a big problem. So just by driving to the local spa, i am opening myself up to an incident. Who wants to live like this???
  4. Thanks for the offer. I do however have a mountain bike and i ride with a friend three times a week and i enjoy it, but then again i dont ride like an idiot and make other residents life a nightmare.. There are a lot of cyclists riding here in the week in the morning, but no problems. They look like professionals though. But i can pass it on to Ken. He needs to get some excersise.
  5. This is every weekend. You dont want to go out anymore, becauce it is just going to mess up your day.
  6. Ok there a lot more photos. but can not upload them becauce of a spamming policy. If you want them, post your email and i will email them.
  7. Got a call from a resident who said he could not take the cyclist issue anymore. I then went out and did a general route, maybe 30 minutes drive. Check out the attached photos and you will now see why we are complaining. Remember this is only a 30 minute drive. Imagine if I did another 30 minutes. The pictures are screenshots from a video, so some of them are not so good <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> ? Cars are riding behind cyclists , obstructing /blocking traffic ? Mountain bikes are riding in the middle of the road, even though they can easily ride on the shoulder ? Having to face oncoming traffic and cyclists when trying to pass. From some of these photos, you will see some of these bunches are now not only taking the full side of the road but now coming on to the oncoming traffic side ? Having to face oncoming traffic that are passing cyclists who are riding in the middle of the road ? The normal riding in the middle of the road and not moving over. On many of these photos you will see that you can not pass them, because of solid white line or blind rise, so now you just have to sit. ? As you can see from the photo?s a lot of these guys are clubs. ? Urinating on peoples driveways. When i asked the guy what he was doing, he said we do this at his house every day. Go figure that one out. ? By the way , he was urinating on a drive way about 50 meters from a restaurant. No excuse. ? A picture of one of the guys who was riding right in the middle of the road and when i hooted, started swearing and said i should pull off and he would sort me out. I did pull off , but all big talk. Like i said, this is the new taxi industry.
  8. So whats the guys name, seen that he gave the rider a false name and contact info. And the plot thickens? No its actually quiet simple. Cyclists in groups of more than 5 or like taxi drivers. Mob mentality takes over. Somebody posted "They should not have surrounded his vehicle . They should have kicked every panel on his car and then give him a box klap before sitting on the pavemunt waiting for better days " So irrespective of whose fault it is, this what you can expect. I asked my friend and his response was after what happended to Ken who in their right mind would give details to these guys. He has no problem defending himself through normal channels. He also has an eye witness. Remember Ken got death threats, they hacked into his website, exposed his ex wifes personal details, sent him email virus, This is the mentality you are dealing with. Just out of interest , he was not forced to stop, he stopped out of his own freewill. One of the cyclists took his keys , not some bakkie driver. He did not hit the cyclist on the side of the road, he was riding in the middle of the road. So if cyclists are riding single file, as the law states, I wonder if this accident would of happened. There is meeting at Teak place on the 11th November where residents are going to put their issues on the table and lets see how CGC and the authorities respond. Read the CGC website. Its amazing how everything gets twisted in these forums and some of the stupid comments. Im not going to waste my time here anymore.
