  2. Hi All im new to daily cycling i have a a fixed speed finnis 540. my issue is I'm really struggling on my daily commute 90% of which is on a steep uphill. firstly i know that a fixed speed bike isnt going to make this commute any easier but as someone who is extremely unfit and overweight(130kg) i want to make sure that I can also enjoy my morning commute with out arriving at work in dire need of a shower. so i have been contemplating getting an E-bike for the ride and also to possibly to start doing some trails on weekends. I come here with a few questions: 1) is it actually worth the purchase? will it make that big of a difference on the daily commute or am i just better off sucking it up for the ride? 2)should i convert my current bike or just get a new one? 3) is there anywhere in and around joburg that i could rent or a hire a bike to try it out for myself to see if it is actually worth it ?
  3. A big shout out and thanks to the team at @TVS Cycles for always going the extra mile to see their customers happy . Thank you so much for all your help the past month from the excellent service on the mountain bike to the help with a trade in.
  4. Hi. I am interested in starting to ride. Particularly for daily campus commute in the city and it would be nice to use the same bike for leisure otherwise (not too hard trails etc). I've seen the Raleigh Volt 24" e bike on sale and yet I've seen people saying not to buy raleighs or bikes from makro/game on this website? I used to ride when I was a kid (had one of those BMX bikes with reverse brakes for many years...a raleigh which held up well). Since then it's only been hiring bikes on holiday once in a while. I am not fit at all but I am young and do quite a bit of walking. I am about 60kg and 175-180cm tall (and wear size 11s...dk if that affects bike riding). Not fit at all (7 minutes of indoor football has me finished). It's a major reason I'd prefer an e bike. Campus is about 5km away...it's a 40 min walk and a 10-15 min drive. It is near the city centre so regardless of the bike safety is an issue. I'm also an unemployed student. Both these reasons have me wanting a bike that is cheaper. Also I might be carrying heavy textbooks in a backpack/on a rack at the back so weight might increase even above 80kg. I wanted to know if the Raleigh Volt 24" e bike is a worthwhile buy. Both for my size/weight and long term use. Daily commute plus occasional trails. There's another Raleigh e bike called the Glide (29") that's usually cheaper but rn the Volt 24" is on sale. Anyone used Raleigh e bikes? (these 2 and Volt 29" as they seem to be of similiar build and are the only ones available in SA...there's much nicer ones overseas) . I've seen people talking quite negatively about them on this forum but I don't think they've even used them. If anyone has ridden them or knows of someone who has please tell me if I will be wasting my money or is it a worthwhile investment. I'd love for it to last me years but honestly I'd be content if it holds up perfectly for over a year of daily use. I'd also need it to be comfortable enough especially with added textbook weight and not give me any problems to fix. Please assist.
  5. So, I like this cycling thing quite a bit. With the GP Road Race Champs just up the road from me yesterday I decided to make the effort to go attend. We pitched at 15h00, thinking we will see some serious excitement as this would be right towards the business end of the various races. Firstly, the attendance seemed very sad, just a couple of Gazebo's strewn along Soutpansbergweg for families supporting their husbands, fathers, mothers, sisters etc taking part. I have since just finally accepted that cycling is not a spectator sport, at least not for people physically attending events, even on a short course setup as we had yesterday. You see the cyclists for 10s every lap, with no idea what has transpired on the rest of the lap. I had no idea which riders were in the race and where they were placed. We left after standing around for about 30mins. Somebody needs to seriously consider something new to get non-cyclists excited about these events. Mount some Go-Pros on the Race Commissionaire cars and have someone narrating the action from the car as the race unfolds. Stream all of this to Youtube and people might actually know what is going on out there. This morning, I have not been able to find out what happened in terms of results. I found Reinardt JvR on Strava and see in his description that he finished 3rd. Other than that, nothing. And then on another tangent, can somebody please explain the whole structure of the Provincial champs and how they feed into nationals? Someone like Nicholas Dlamini and Darryl Impey who currently sits in Aus, do they get a free pass to nationals etc?

  7. Hi all I want to upgrade my bike from mech to hydraulic brakes. My budget is limited to about R1500. Which brakes should I buy? I’m not too concerned about ease of installation. I just want reliability and serviceability to be hassle free. I’ve looked at brakes such as Tektro and Shimano mt200, but I don’t know where to buy them. Thank you

  9. Hi guys. I have been looking for buying a crank brothers cobalt wheels for a while, but I don’t see any shop that actually has them. I have seen them online but from a non trustworthy shop. Any idea?
  10. ON AVERAGE, WHAT DO YOU SPEND ON: Cycling Jersey Bib short Im doing some market research on cycling apparel, the reason for this is, I love riding with nice fitting & high quality gear, but these do come at a price. I just received a order from a major brand and to be honest, it was disappointing because i paid a premium for this item and expected great quality from them, so i want to see if there is a price range that my fellow cyclists are willing to pay for epic quality, a realistic price point. Im on a mission to see if a solution is possible to make great quality gear accessible to most riders.
  11. Looking for a few ladies to ride with around Parkview/Emmarentia area. Beginner-intermediate level. Road or MTB. Are there any groups around?
  12. Hey guys I was looking for an all round bike that I can race enduro with but from what I have seen the sensor comp seems to be a good bike especially from a price point. I'm a bit worried about a used bike just incase I snap the frame it doesn't have a warranty

  15. I had an awesome experience this past weekend. Broke my pedal while away on holiday in Marloth Park. Thought I would take a chance and commented on a local mountain biker's ride on Strava, asking if he perhaps had a spare set. He ended up driving 10km to meet me half way with a set of pedals and refused payment. Mountain bikers are awesome people Thanks Willie Horn from Komatipoort
  16. Any one find a pair of Rudy Project sunglasses at Northern Farm on Monday, 22 March, or later? They have a silver & white frame with photochromic lenses. Thanks.
  17. Hi All We are hosting a Classic & Vintage ride on the first Sunday of each month starting at Makiti in the Cradel. 7:00 for 7:15. It is very much a social ride and distance as per participants desires. The aim is really to get classic enthusiasts together to show their bikes and an opportunity to discuss our passion. Please join us, even if you don't yet have a classic bike. Thanks Greg Chamberlin 079 609 3555
  18. Average rider (strength) seeks weekend group ride in the surrounding areas. Any suggestions for this weekend? Thanks! JP
  19. I'm doing a poll on the preferred team size for a team time trial race, taking into account social distancing rules and regulations, and the limited size of heads at an event. Mass participation events are most certainly under pressure and unlikely to take place until the pandemic is behind us. Assuming a team trial event, similar to the MalutiD90 and the DC, would be the way forward, what size team would you deem ideal for one of two distances (100Km and 160Km)? Type your reply in the comments section below, remember to subscribe to this channel and click on the bell icon to get notifications each time new content is posted.
  20. edit: link to the event registration is open - click here. Some club mates have been talking about starting a weekly/bi-weekly/monthly Crit race on a short circuit course on a Friday night. The venue will be on a new section of tar SE of Rand Airport;1.72Km long and can be race both clockwise and counterclockwise;18m of elevation gain per lap - it's flat, but there will be "out the saddle" efforts twice per lap as you negotiate the two 180-degree turns (1 hair-pin and 1 mdeium sized traffic circle;Daurtion will be 30 mins + 1 lap - maximum of 4 groups per night;Estimated lap time of 2:00 - 2:30, depending on the group, giving 12-15 laps before the bell lap.Initial talks have been around a Friday evening as the full route is lit, but not sure what the interest will be vs a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. We'll start on a Friday evening, as planned, and then see how it gains traction. Seeding? What's that... if you get dropped, suck it up and try harder... or... drop a group the next time. Rules can be added as we go, eg. repeat winners can be pushed up a group, and vice versa for last few places. An entry fee may need to be charged to cover a medical team and toilet hire (the closest shops are about 2-3Km away, We'd prefer to award points for position and then perhaps have one end of season prize giving. As we grow, this can become more formal. No officials needed, and this won't be sanctioned. The costs to set this up is unnecessary, and is more about giving those interested in participating a chance to hone their bike handling skills, do some HIIT workouts under race conditions and FUN - the rules are simple: Safety first - it's the riders' responsibility to police the guys drifting/changing lanes;First one over the line wins - he/she gets to brag about it until the next race; The race starts on time, and only stopped if weather conditions make it unsafe - we'll use our experience from running our mass participation event. I'll post a link to the video soon - driving it by car doesn't do justice to the effort required to complete a lap or two or 12-15. What else? Let me know in the comments below
  21. Our first event last month was a great success. We are hosting another Night Ride, from the same venue, but we have a new route this time. We will still pass the Union Buildings, but wont be going up to the telkom tower, opting for a more leuisurely route throough the suburbs, with a few more MTB specific sections this time. Afterwards there will be snacks and wine, and we can enjoy a bit of a chat, and there will be a few lucky draw prizes too. Space is limited, and as many found out last month, the event fills up pretty fast. Make sure you book your spot now, to avoid missing out. click here to book a spot
