  1. I would like to convert my Giant Talon 3 2019 to a 1x System. It currently has a 3x8 with the following specs: https://99spokes.com/en/bikes/giant/2019/talon-3 I have sourced the following parts locally and want to know if these would all fit on my Talon. I know the Talon doesnt come with a microspline hub hence the choice of a 11 speed cassette. However I would like to use all the other 12 parts where possible. Any assistance with the upgrade would be appreciated.   2. Shimano introduces a new drivetrain technology today, Linkglide. It’s designed not to be the lightest weight but to prioritise durability and shift performance. It also represents something of a fork in the road for the brand’s drivetrains. There will still be Hyperglide+, and this will remain the lightweight fast shifting performance range, while Linkglide will sit alongside their current offerings, as opposed to replacing them. Shimano claims that their testing shows that Linkglide cassettes are 300% more durable than prior Hyperglide cassettes, and three times less degradation to the cassette should mean fewer chain skips, more mileage, and better shifting long into the cassette’s lifespan. Linkglide will be available in either 10 speed Deore (RD-M5130-SGS) or 11 speed Deore XT (RD-M8130-SGS).Before we all celebrate too quickly, there is one small catch - the Linkglide technology, while introduced in Deore 1x10 or XT 1x11 speed as a highly durable option, is not cross compatible or retrofittable with current drivetrains due to different gear pitches. All Linkglide components will feature a logo to differentiate them from their stablemates. A CS-LG600-11 11-50T XT cassette, pictured, weighs 780g. The CS-LG600-10 11-43T Deore cassette is slightly lighter at 634g.The teeth of Linkglide cassettes are made from plated steel with a new shape to reduce wear and tear. The teeth feature a thicker and more robust construction to prevent wear in the areas that experience the most degradation over time. Linkglide cassette teeth are also taller and stronger towards the tips to prevent chain skipping and tooth deformation, even as the miles add up. Sprockets 11T, 13T, 15T of the cassettes are replaceable. The Linkglide cassettes also feature a new shifting gate design and position, enabling the chain to move smoothly across the sprockets. These gates aim to reduce pedal shock or jumps during shifting, providing better pedaling fluidity and smoother pedaling performance. The SL-M8130-R XT shifter; the SL-M5130-R Deore shifter is available with an optional shift window.Two new shifters, again Deore and XT, are available. The XT has multiple clamping options whereas the Deore makes do with a simple band. The shifters use a different pull ratio to the rest of Shimano's range so are not compatible with non-Linkglide systems. They are, however, somewhat interchangeable with each other thanks to a linear pull ratio. That means an 11 speed shifter will work on a 10 speed derailleur. Linkglide cassettes are compatible with standard HG freehubs. To accompany the new Linkglide cassettes, there are also new Deore XT and Deore derailleurs and shifters. The derailleurs feature Shimano’s Shadow RD+ low profile design and clutch mechanism. All Linkglide drivetrains use a common chain design, regardless of the number of cogs on the cassette. Existing 11-speed Shimano chains are compatible with Linkglide drivetrains. It’s perhaps also worth noting that all Shimano 11-speed chains are currently e-bike rated or e-bike designed.
  3. Hey Guys First thread on here so take it easy on me haha... I have a Cannondale Trail 29 Hardtail. Used to ride a bit of DH at varsity (I sucked, good at crashing though.) and then focused on paddling and running the last 8-10 years. I decided to get back onto a bike cos it's fun and you can do such a cool mix of long explorey days and cool techy trail rides. Anyway, I bought my budget Cannondale Hardtail with tubeless done and the front derailleur removed by the previous owner as he was just using it to keep miles off his fancy bike for beachfront rides etc. I got it for R 9 500 only a year old in immaculate shape. So its 1x10 SLX and has the Shimano branded but no specific name (SLX / Deore etc) brakes. I manage 95% of the time with the 1x10 as he put on a 40t big cog - spin out on the downs obviously but that's fine. 34t chainring. I've done close to 100km days pretty comfortably and I manage most of the steep tech stuff ok too. I think that 1x11 would obviously be better if I want to do some stage / longer 1 day races. The brakes are also adequate but not much more than that. What sort of price would I be able to pick up a SLX 11 speed rear derailleur and cassette and some better brakes? Happy to trawl the used section of the hub until I can find something! I've put on wider Ritchey bars and a shorter (50mm) stem as it's a large and I'm probably in between M and L frames. Do you think it's worthwhile? I'm happy and comfortable on my bike and riding some pretty decent distances / speeds and technical stuff so don't feel the need to go full sus any time soon due to extra cost and service requirements etc.

Hi Guys, I should start by saying that until this weekend, I haven't been on a bike in about 13 years (since school days) when a Raleigh M-Trax was the coolest thing around, so please forgive me if my knowledge is a little limited and perhaps leads to me asking dumb questions. I promise I'm a quick learner A good friend of mine gave me a GT Avalanche 0.0 (I know, old as balls) to get back in the swing of things, and ever since he told me that I'll be getting it, I've been looking at what it's got, and what I might like to change. The first of these would be replacing the current v-brakes with some entry level disk brakes. The frame and hubs are good to go in terms of fitment possibilities (shimano hubs with 6x bolt fitment), but my question pertains to the brake levers currently on the bike, and how replacing these will affect the fitment of my existing shifters. From what I could see, the existing shifters are fitted to the brake levers, which in turn are fitted to the bar. The nature of this fitting is still foreign to me, as is whether, and if and if so, which hydraulic lever will enable me to maintain this fitting? The Deore range is pretty vast in terms of models, and I have no idea what to look for in terms of being able to retain my existing shifters. I realize that the bike is worth about R4.65 and fitting anything other than a smiley face sticker to it might be overcapitalizing, seeing as Gumtree is rife with second hand bikes with disc brakes fitted for less than the average disc brake kit, but I'm just exploring the possibility in the hopes that someone rips their stock brakes off to upgrade, and then sells it to me for a steal Thanks, and have a good one!
  5. Hubbers, Any technical info on what are the main differences between the Shimano FC-M615 and FC-M625 cranksets (2x10)? I've tried the Shimano website, but differences are very vague. Cheers.

Hi there I'm looking at new brakes as the ones that came on my bike just aren't cutting it (Shimano m505) everything else on my bike is SLX so my first instinct is the SLX and they are higher up in the Shimano line so therefore should be 'better'. I want to know from experience what everyone's experience has been and any advice on which ones to go with as I'm looking at the SLX m675 vs the Deore m615. I see online there's about a R700 difference. I ride cross country mostly doing ROAG events around 40km but I want to work towards doing longer races and even a stage raceor two. I'm 178cm and 59kg and currently have 180mm up front and 160mm in the back, I would like to keep it that way but will get new rotors. Also is ICE TECH really worth it especially with me being so light I'm not heavy on the brakes. I looked and can get SLX set with ICE TECH rotors from CRC for about R2 200 and my girlfriend will be in England at the end of the year anyway so is that a good option? (I like supporting local but that is an awesome deal). And with everything being Shimano on my bike I want to keep it that way also for the sake of ease with I-Spec, I like the cleaner look. HELP!!!
  7. Dear all. I need your assistance. I'm new in MTB and have Trek X-Caliber 6 2014. The problem is my front derailleur Shimano M191. In some positions of front gear and back gear I hear friction in it. I've tried to adjust it but without success. I've decided to change it on Shimano FD-M590. The problem I see is that stock one designed for 8 ring cassette (which is installed) and Deore is for 10 ring cassette. Please, advice if it is going to work properly and if not, what change I can apply? Thank you.
