  1. Hi all I want to upgrade my bike from mech to hydraulic brakes. My budget is limited to about R1500. Which brakes should I buy? I’m not too concerned about ease of installation. I just want reliability and serviceability to be hassle free. I’ve looked at brakes such as Tektro and Shimano mt200, but I don’t know where to buy them. Thank you
  2. Hi Everyone I am thinking of building another wheel with a single speed free hub, any suggestions? Kind Regards Pieter
  3. Without starting this thread sounding like an offshore oil rig worker trying to sell his cousin's bike, I'll get right to the point: I need to decide what set of brakes to get for my MTB next. Background: I am built for going more downhill than up - around 100kg. My bike is a 150mm/130mm travel black mongrel weighing more than 14kg. I like the more technical stuff and not averse to my bike's tyres leaving contact with Mother Earth on occasion. I currently run Shimano XT M8000's on a 203mm front and 180mm rear rotor which give me reasonable stopping power but lacks modulation and brute force when it is really needed, and I feel holding me back a little in terms of confidence to push the boundaries a bit more. The shortlist at the moment contains: TRP Quadiem's Hope Tech3 E4's Formula Cura's and possibly TRP slate I'm not a big fan of SRAM brakes due to previous bad experiences therefore I won't consider these as an option for now. At the end of the day I'll need to way up performance, reliability, ease of getting spares, backup and repairs but also value for money, as there is a significant difference in price between some of the options on my list. I am not asking any of you to choose for me, but would appreciate if anybody with proper experience with any of the listed brake sets above to impart some of it to educate my eventual leap. Greatly appreciated!
  4. [i did a quick search and didnt find a thread dedicated to this, if there is, sorry for this and please direct me to it.] Shifter mounting + Brake mounting =.........the challenge of finding the right matchmaker (and there are MILLION variables) AND it can change your "ah let me quickly do a brake set change" to a long night of research and scratching in your spare parts bins. Now something that can puzzle me at 11pm is how to fit my new SRAM Guide brakes to my Shimano XT shifter. I had Hope brakes before and that needed its own 'matchmaker'. I thought there should be a thread here on the hub with pics of how to do these things, a summary where anyone can come to find what ever they need (so please add stuff if you have more info). Patches are the guy to actually do this (he likes writing long posts with pictures etc etc) but it seems like I asked some questions he didnt even know so I will start and throw a few things in that I have found in the last few hours. So the XT shifter I bought (i-spec), it looks like: See the problem? Yes, nothing nice and round that can go around the bar, because it is made to go nicely onto a Shimano brake like so: But because I planned to use it with Hope brakes, I bougth the Hope matchmaker back then, it mounts on shifter like so: And to the bar like so: There are obviously plenty of shifter options and plenty of brake options and yes you can mount them seperately, which is what I considered next. Which would look like this for the brake: And well something like this for the shifter: or where it seems you need/can use one of these: Which does leave you with a 'busy bar' but I am SO desperate to get these damn brakes on that I would have let it happen...IF I had one of those options avaible ...SADLY I dont!!! Here is where the frustation started at 11:30pm last night. And no, you can not mount the shifter with the hope matchmaker and the top half that came with the Hope lever assembly, because neither have thread. Refering to these two parts: So the option I then started looking at is the matchmaker option with the XT shifter and SRAM brake. So it looks like here alone are quite a few options too. Here is what I think will get my bike sorted asap: (I actually think I might have the right little one piece somewhere at home...if not, I might find a friend that do (before day end). Patch did tell me about this website, but I dont think they can help me as fast as I need it: http://problemsolversbike.com/products/mismatch_adapters Randomly here are other options I have found with Hope brakes: More reading: http://www.braggibikes.com/mixmatch/ At least the guides and dropper post lever was easy going...match/love at 1st sight... And this is just great for 'unclutered' bars: Edit 1: 11pm = night..think it is called a tautology
  5. So as the title suggests am looking for some new boost wheels that will be light enough to pedal over distance but resilient enough to hand a few rock gardens and general trail riding. Weight and how they roll is as much a factor as I like to do distance as well as short fun stuff. The bike is boost which is another consideration. Actual boost hub's or the axle kit AC offer to make hub's boost compatible. Would rather not have boost but unfortunately the bike I wanted is. I can't see there is any perceivable difference between actual boost hub's and the axle conversion. Although some argue it's pointless having a boost bike and then just adjusting the spacing. I know in the real world I can't feel the difference . Have already ridden the bike with loan wheels that are boost hub's vs my wheels which are spaced . I will only be running 2.2 -2.3 rears and 2.3- 2.4 fronts if that has any bearing on my decision as the ac's are wide proper wide. Anyone who has ridden or owned either or both your input would be appreciated. As would anyone who wants to pass on some advice . Am leaning towards the smokin guns, what a freakin cool name . Oh and on a mid travel 9r Have put this out there instead of hassling MM ????????
  6. While I was installing a new cassette onto my Hope Pro 2 Evo Hub I accidentally pulled the freebody off the hub. I wasn't expecting to pull it off so easily, I was really just making sure the cassette was fastened properly. Anyhow, this may well have been a good thing as it allowed me to see just how dirty things are getting inside the freebody. What presumably was grease at one point can now only be described as a muddy gunk. Not exactly the kind of stuff you want to "protect" the pawls and hub shell. I've checked out the video on Hope's website for overhauling the Pro 2 Evo hubs. I would love to swap out all the bearings and do the full service myself, but I don't have all the tools. So I thought I could at least clean and grease the Freebody myself. According to the Video, Hope use a grease called Mobil HXP 222. I can't seem to find this anywhere in SA though. So here's my question, which grease can you recommend I use?

Hi guys Hope the indoor trainers are keeping us all active. Im in the process of building up a racing wheelset for the road but I'm struggling with my hub choice: Hope Mono RS for R4665 DT Swiss 240s for R7013 Tune MIG 70 front and MAG 170 rear for R7255 The gap between the DT and the tune is pushing me towards the tune. But the Hopes are very very good value for money and easy to service What do you guys think? Thanks Mopkop
  9. I see Hope is bringing out an 11 speed cassette, 10-42 of 10-44. It sounds like it will only fit Hope hubs, though. http://brimages.bikeboardmedia.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Hope-boost-148-110-10-speed-cassette-11-speed-1-600x400.jpg http://www.bikerumor.com/2015/04/29/soc15-hope-10-and-11-speed-wide-range-cassettes-full-boost-hubs-and-wild-show-bikes/
  10. From our very first Ti-glide hubs launched back in 1993 we've have had a reputation for producing some of the most durable and high quality hubs on the market. This attention to detail has been carried into the new Pro 4 hub range as they are a direct development of the successful Pro 2 EVO. Click here to view the article
  11. Hi guys. I want to get some opinions on the Stan's ZTR Flow Ex rims built onto Hope Hubs vs American Classic Wide Lightnings. I know the AC Wide Lightnings weighs around 1569 including rim tape, which is ridiculously low seeing that they're 29mm wide internally. I don't know what Hope Pro 2 Evo + ZTR Flows weigh, but it's not really the weight that will get my attention. How is the AC hub compared to a Hope Hub? How much maintenance would the two require? I'm around 107kgs and not at all a contender in any race, but would really like a wheel where the tyre does not roll over the rim and where it can handle my weight. I want the Toyota Hilux of bikes.. Which wheels would that be? Please also include any other contenders, the aim is value for money, not the best looking wheel that fails after a couple of rides... For now (and I'll keep a pro/con list updated) ZTR Flow + Hope: Pro - More options visibly, due to AMC only being available in brownish on blackHope's hub, which is known for ease of servicing and durabilityPriced R6499 (if same price as Crest or Arch Ex)No rider weight limitCon - I presume they will be heavier than Wide LightningHand built somewhere which may or may not be stronger than the mass produced Wide Lightnings25mm internal width1871g (only an issue if you're a weight weenie)Unknown - All adapters cheap and could be includedWarranty (if any) American Classic Wide Lightning: Pro - Tubeless tape installedTubeless valves installed1512g per setInternal width of > 29mm!!! Con - Not available as rim onlyOnly brownish on black rim available which may not match the rest of your bikeOnly available as a wheelset, thus no other hubs availableDifficult to source in SA, particularly at a discount to RRPMore flex than Flow, particularly if you're a heavier riderComplaints of slow freehub engagement on older setsSome complaints about the rim being dented easily, however where this happened it did not affect ride quality Additional items - Adaptability - Qr, 15mm, 20mm, 142 vs 135 unknown107kg rider weight limit No rider weight limit I have to put a disclaimer here, this is just things I think I know, not facts, and the purpose of this thread is to get input into ANY wheelset that can match this weight/durability at the most affordable price. Again, we're looking for the aftermarket wheelset that matches most fatties or intermediate riders that wants bulletproof wheels at the best bang for buck. If you feel there's other wheelsets I need to include, list them and I'll read up on them a bit...
  12. Hi guys Looking at beautifying my wife bike a bit (Cannonade Scalpel), and a minor upgrade. She's running SRAM Avid Elixir 5's atm, which is also integrated to her X9 shifting levers. I'm looking at upgrading to either Elixir 9's or a total change to the Hope Tech 3 V4's. On the Sram Avid Elixir 9's I want to anodise the actual lever and the clamp. On the Hope Tech 3's I will anodise the lever and the reservoir cap. Has anyone removed a lever from the Elixir 5 or 9's, the holding pin looks permanent. I have a set of pink Jagwire brake lines on her Elixir 5's atm, so if I went Elixir 9's then it is a straight transfer, they use the same fittings from what I can see. If I went Hope Tech 3's then it is a total rip and replace. Logic tells me to go Elixir 9's, Whats everyone's experience with them. G
  13. Any suggestions where to go for the best deal on a new Wheelset? ZTR 29r Flow EX/Hope Combo with 15mm Front and 142x12 Rear.
  14. I have a new bike in the works, but am stuck on wheels. I thought that the all knowing forum might be of help, or at least give me some insights. I'm looking to get a solid, but not rock hard wheelset and have narrowed it to three options, but not opposed to suggestions. I'm down to DT Swiss Spline E1900, DT Swiss Spline Two E1700 or a custom pair with Hope hubs and Nukeproof Generator AM rims. They're all around the 22-23mm inner width for hubs. The only thing stopping me from the Hope wheels are the sound, and the 1700's are on the expensive side. I've also looked at Superstar wheels, but seeing as I'm based in Beijing at the moment, shipping is killer. Any suggestions?
