If I was only a roadie, this would be much easier. Racing/Peaking in summer and start with base training in winter.

How do you do periodization if you do mtb, road riding, trail running and road running. Ok I'm not that worried about road running. It's more for the fun.

Do you look at your main events for the year and structure it around that?

For this year it's the jock in July, Gauteng Trail running series in June/July, Isuzu 3 Towers in October and Thule 4 peaks trail run in October/November somewhere.

According to 'The Cyclist's Training Bible' by Joe Friel (excellent book for anyone serious about training), you first need to select your priority races and goals and then you structure everything else around those.

That said, I believe Hunter Allen (the power training guru) called the South African racing calendar as being pretty odd with the Jock, one of the biggest races of the year, stuck in the middle of nowhere and all the other major races months away on either side. This makes it difficult to structure a proper base training phase through winter.

Its easy, ride hard every day till you cant, then take a day off and repeat. Thats the training program of my good friend Graeme Obree.
