A man was arrested on Table Mountain after rangers responded to complaints that he harassed cyclists on a popular cycling route near King’s Blockhouse.

“I can confirm that the arrest has taken place. The man was harassing people on the mountain. It has been confirmed that he is wanted in connection with other incidents on the mountain,” SANParks regional communications manager Merle Collins said on Sunday night.

“From what I understand, he did not attack or rob anybody, but he was harassing people.” She said mountain rangers had responded to a call yesterday (Sunday) afternoon.

“Our guys were in the area. They handed the suspect to police. This comes as a major breakthrough for all of us.”

Asked how the suspect had been connected to other crimes on the mountain, she said a Morphe Touch test (a device that scanned fingerprints and confirmed whether a suspect was linked to other crimes) was done.

She said the matter was handed over to the police.

Cape Town Cental police spokeswoman Khunjulwa Sam confirmed a man was in police custody, but said he was not wanted in connection with other mountain incidents.

She said the 20-year-old would appear in court on Monday in connection with two crimes committed in Manenberg.

A Rondebosch resident, who did not want to be identified, said a group of cyclists had chased the suspect after he had threatened one of them.

“They called security.”
