I hope there is someone on this board within the importers of freight forwarding fraternity that can help me?

I have recently ordered a package from CRC which, after shipping fees, totalled just over R 20 K. DHL now refuses to release this as you need to have an importers number and the SARS at ORT are just useless  and dont even respond to my queries.

What is the best way to proceed with this?

Many thanks in advance

Hi,

I have been in a similar situation last year, it's actually easy.

Get a clearing agent to do it for you, just speak to the local SARS agent, they will give you names of individuals or companies that will do the clearing for you.

The cost is about R400.

You will need to provide the clearing agent with proof of what you paid, i.e. credit card statement or email statement from CRC.

Good luck, it can be frustrating

Thanks All, and also for the PM's Bongo - unfortunately the people mentioned could also not help me, only DHL can do so because they are already in receipt of the package. My goodness they are useless!!!

I have now resorted to placing an article on hellopeter.com, hopefully this wakes them up

Leturbo - its a Quarq power meter, BB30, quite a nice bit of equipement (plus two Oakleys, one his, one hers!!)

Have You sorted this out yet. You only require a Imports/Exports code if you are a regular importer or Exporter but if you do this once of then they should use a general code for importers as yourself.

I can not see any delay in getting your things released by customs if you have all the supporting documents (Invoice, list of Goods purchased etc).

Will come back to you shortly with more details if you require it.

Hi

YOu need to speak to who ever is dealing with this for you and tell them to write a motivational letter asking customs permision to use the miscellaneous importer code of 70707070, this consist of saying you a first time importer, importing for personal use not for resale etc, anything that motivates your reasons to use this code, and if they still have a problem ask to speak to their supervisor, then if you still have a problem get me their name and no and will take it further for you.

Hope this helps you, goodluck

mmmm....

The rules actually states that if you import more than 3 times a year of more than

R20 000 per year, you have to register as an importer. <_<

That said, I am sure you'll be able to push it through via the genereal importers code.

As for DHL.....I wil NEVER, EVER, NOT IN A MILLION years EVER use them again.

I go out of my way to chase them out of my company when a rep visits.

They are by FAR the worst company I have ever dealt with. Worst. Ever.

Good luck with this!
