I did my first Ultra marathon on Saturday (Two Oceans) and it went very well.

Everyone's always going on about the different sports drinks.

I tried most of them through the years of cycling and running.

When I entered Two Oceans, I saw that they will hand out Powerade at the refreshment stations.

So I started training with Powerade.

During the race, I only used Powerade and GU gels. Thats all.

I did walk a few times, but my training programme advised me to do so, to save the legs.

I got no cramps and even went a bit faster for the last 5km's.

So why spend a lot of money on expensive sports drinks when Powerade works just as well.

Carbs are carbs, and salt is salt.

I train/race on Game and Energade, and whatever gel I prefer/have at that point in time - I do not like the taste of Powerade.

Just using powerade or any other sports drink during a race will make you extremely dehydrated. One of the members of my club raced a long race with just energade and ended up throwing up everywhere.

You actually would probably do well with just GU gels and water...

The sports drinks are either isotonic or hypertonic. What you really need to have is something just slightly hypotonic.

Is it an issue if you drink a sports drink and take gels? I have heard it said that you should use either or but not both as your sugar levels can get too high and make you ill.

I tend to race on Energade(two bottles) and Supagoo(1 sachet every 30 minutes - starting with the first in the pens 15 minutes before the start). Keeps me going during the race, but I've noticed that I feel 'unwell' afterwards. Have not done any races(only 2) this year, although I've picked up my training since November last year. Have noticed that I've tended not to NEED the gels as much, which let to me not taking then as regularly and me then being more tired towards the end of the event.

One of those races was on '23IG' :) and I've bombed like a Kamikaze pilot only dreams of doing! The other I tried to follow my normal feeding scheme, and had the race of my life (except towards the end when I've not been taking my gels as regularly!)

BAD!

JUST ANOTHER COOLDRINK!

NOT ENOUGH OF ANYTHING TO MAKE YOU SUPER CHARGED!

WHEN USING A GEL "you need to consume 500ml water" OR YOU WILL GET CRAMPS AND DEHYDRATE.

WHAT? Makes a drink become a SPORTS drink?

THATS! All they are just another SPORTS DRINK!

EVERYBODY FOR THEIR FAVORITE +*_-' (add drink) may just SURVIVE!

I always used to use powerade and it was ok. Last year during amashova I stopped halfway to refill at a USN water point and they had some proper stuff - it made a huge difference, it must be almost like how Contador feel after some spanish steak. Never gone back to powerade unless I am far away from home and need to raid a garage shop.

I also tried that 69GI stuff and also was reduced to newborn lamb status after 50k. Having said that - different things work for different people so try different things in training and find what works for you.
