STOCKHOLM - A teenage cyclist has been fined for speeding in the southern Swedish town of Tranas, local media reported Wednesday.

The 17-year-old was clocked at 58 kilometres per hour in central Tranas and ordered to pay a fine of 1,500 kronor (242 dollars), the daily Tranas Tidning reported.

The speed limit in the area of the town where the police speed trap was set up is 50 kilometres per hour.

The teenager would likely not have been fined had he used rollerblades, a skateboard or roller skis.

"The reason is that if you use roller skis, rollerblades, skateboards and the like, you are counted as a pedestrian," Bo Goingberg of the Swedish Transport Agency told broadcaster SvT.

Hmmm, I remember a fuss in Joburg back in the 80s sometime - I think it was a cyclist clocking 70kph in a 60 zone on William Nicol or Bryanston Drive. Also got issued a speeding fine, and there was lots of debate because speed limits were originally introduced as a "petrol saving" strategy by the government of the day.

I used to have aspirations of triggering a speed camera on my bicycle. Dunno how they would have sent the fine to me (unless I put my car registration on my back)... but it would have made for some confused faces when the JMPD downloads the pics off the camera.

I have since given up on those aspirations...

...but I will pick them up again if someone knows of a 40kph camera in the Jo'burg area

(has to be a 40kph zone... my bike is running a single 36T blade up front, so even on a slight downhill I spin out at 60kph)

Occasionally on a Wednesday morning, we activate a fixed Traffic light camera as we cycle through a particular intersection.

Would love to see the faces of the guys processing the film.

So you're the guy / group who rides through red robots?

That's right, at 05:00 if there is no traffic approaching from either direction.

Madness. Nobody in their right minds gets up at 05:00am (or, even more disturbing, at some earlier hour to be on the bike on the road at 05:00am). I recommend a good psychiatrist and sleeping pills.
