Rear Hub Axle Stripping...

patches

Recommended Posts

On saturday when I took my wheels off my bike to load it into the car, I noticed the free-hub body was loose. Under closer inspection I saw that the cause was a stripped axle and drive side lock nut.

The hub is a Nuke Proof Generator AM 135mm QR. It runs sealed bearings.

Here's pics of the axle and lock nut (sorry for poor quality)

One may not be able to see due to poor quality pics... but the thread on both the lock nut and the axle is stripped.

Has anyone had this happen before? What causes it? Clamping the QR too tight?

I doubt it has anythign to do with a too-tight QR, since this is very difficult to do.

I guess it is a combination of poor materials, poor design (too small thread) and a loose nut that moved on the axle when pedalling, damaging the fine thread. It is easy to spot this type of damage if you know what you're looking for. A nice picture taken with a macro lens may help to confirm the cause.

It seems like Nuke Proof is just a name, not a gaurantee.

thanks JB!

unfortunately I don't have a nice camera... but yeah, I also thouhgt the clamping of the QR is unlikely.

As you say, the nut was probably loose, and with my riding (most of which is dirt jumping), it must have experiences some lateral force.

Well, looks like a CRC order is in need. R60 for the nut. R150 for the axle. keep it tight. Lesson learnt.

I know it's probably not the best idea, but will any further damage occur if I ride it while I wait for the replacement to arrive? The QR ensures that the freehub body stays in place while the wheel is on the bike.
