Just so get a feeling of what fellow Hubber's think/experience..

So how much training should one be doing during the week for successive 50km-65km MTB races on weekends?

Goal time +-2h30min (for the Knysna as an example)

You cant have a goal time for MTB races. All the terrains are different. Look back at previous race times for a specific race, and go from there.

Yeah when it comes to goal time for races it is race specific. The Magalies Monster took the leaders 3.20 and the same guys do other 70km races in 2.30.

In terms of your question as to how much training....

Check out alloutmtb.co.za for some good training articles and do a search on the site. There are some questions about the epic and training times which can help. SwartPiet this is maybe your are of expertise?

I am limited by time so normally can only manage about an hour a day, so I make it count and push my heart rate. I have noticed significant benefits from that.

I reckon you should be good on 6-8 hours/week if you train right. One long ride, one intermediate ride, one hills ride and one intervals ride per week.

Works for me!

It is not always how much you do but how you get it done.

Quality beats quantity hands down.

Good post, question maybe to further discussion. When do you change from the smallers races aka 20/25/30 km to the more "grootter" races 42/60km.

I did it after 2 months on a bike. My 3rd race ever was a 45km.

Now I enter the 50kms over the 30kms and I am loving it as it feels like an achievment everytime.

Just do it! :)

5 or more hours a week on the bike is plenty if you want to be at a reasonable level without letting your lifestyle suffer too much IMO. Be sure to do hard hilly rides at least once a week, not only 3hr weekend rides at medium pace.

I normally aim to be in the first 1/4 of the field in any race I do (doesn't always materialize though...). Putting down a time based on distance is very subjective - it could by muddy, windy, etc. but its always the same for everyone.

I reckon one long ride (4 hours +) over the weekend and one or two shorter rides (90 min) or a couple of spinning classes during the week should be sufficient.
