Dear Friends and Colleagues,

 

As you may know, I have now become personally involved in the fight against Rhino poaching. I cannot sit and complain with the rest of SA but do nothing from my side. Especially not after my personal experience with 6 of these magnificent animals during a week-end. To all of you who has signed the petition – thank you. This is not something I am driving but I will do everything in my power to help them to get as many names as possible.

 

Now, traditionally Spring is a happy day when companies and people wear bright, joyful colours. I have had an idea that SA should all wear black on Spring, 1st September and tie a black ribbon to the right hand mirror of their vehicles or motorbikes. The idea is that it should symbolise the following;

 

1 We are fed-up with poachers and the leniency showed in their prosecution and sentences including affording them bail.

 

2 In memory of ABSA and all the other Rhino's that were killed so senseless for their horns.

 

3 To symbolise that the future is black for our Rhino population because our government shows lack of interest in fighting this?

 

Please, please wear BLACK on 1st September 2011 and tie a BLACK ribbon around the right hand mirror of your vehicle. Spread the word. PLEASE join in this campaign! If you have contacts in the media – please help us. I have received positive feedback from as far as the Cape – companies there are declaring the 1st of September 2011 “Black Spring” and the media is already alerted to this.

 

Please post on your Face Book wall and declare 1st September 2011 “Black Spring” – tell people about the idea. if you can get your company and employees to support this – please do? We don’t all have money to contribute but we can make a stand and a difference by something so simple, so symbolic. With the rate our Rhino’s are poached – we do not have reason to celebrate on spring day.

It is NOT the poachers, it is the demand. Stop those paying for poaching rhino horns and the demand will cease. I suspect to much will be lost by those involved in this disgusting business, that why the carnage is allowed to go on and on.

I don't think you can change demand, too many people want Rhino horn (Asia has to many people). Only way to stem the slaughter is to legalize Rhino horn farming, setting pricing, creating regulations and monitoring.

 

Increase the supply so that the demand gets fed legally. This will decrease the nouveau riche wanting to attain Rhino horn for societal stature, and in turn take the pressure off wild rhino.

Increase the supply so that the demand gets fed legally. This will decrease the nouveau riche wanting to attain Rhino horn for societal stature, and in turn take the pressure off wild rhino.

 

There are issues with that idea too. You create a false belief market, i.e. If it is supplied, more demand is createdby those who can now afford it. It is essentially approving the belief, thereby adding authenticity to the claim.

 

Now here is an intersting fact, and tell me if you think it has any relevance... China has voted Cape Town as their NUMBER ONE tourist destination.. Part of this is due to the close locale of the surrounding game parks.

 

I see is two distinct methods of using this to our advantage in changing the mindset surrounding false beliefs - not only Rhino but Shark fin -

 

1. Protest the tourists from their arrival until their departure. An everyday bombardment of protest against the demand. Make it really unpleasant that their false belief fuels the rape of our animals.. Notice, OUR animals, not theirs! Yet China has the audacity to vote CT as top spot!?? (I know Chinese govt is not responsible, nor are the majority of its citizens, but it just so happens China has not responded to the request for action against the trade.. WHY? Because it is worth so much to certain individuals linked to hierarchy??? Could be.)

 

or

 

2. Accept their presence and through an aggressive marketing drive, fill their stay with images of repercussions in this destructive trade. Billboards, television, leaflets, tour lunch-boxes, bumper stickers, websites, hotel in-room marketing material, basically everything they see, hear and understand during their visit shows our concern for their demand...

 

If it will get them to discuss how much it affects the PEOPLE of South Africa when they return to China, that might be the start of empathy for our wildlife. Almost a shame system.

 

I think it is ironic that CT is their top destination. They WANT to come here, we cannot let this opportunity slip passed!

I will not work. Chinese, not your friendly sweet and sour take away Chinese or R5-00 shop Chinese but those that grew up in China has no feelings or guilt or remorse. They do not even care for other Chinese and are only worried about themselves. They will lie without even thinking. I have first hand experience of that. I worked with three different Chinese Construction Companies as a Consultant over a period of four years. It was exactly the same with all three companies even though they came from three different provinces in China. Their quality of work is not that bad but we had to constantly check them for cheating. I saw a light in their soils laboratory one night. I found them re-calibrating their Nuclear Density Testing Device to give proper reults. Later I found one of them practicing my signature, in both cases the people involved were sent back to China immediately. NOT BECAUSE THEY CHEATED BUT BECAUSE THEY WERE CAUGHT!

 

Please do not call me names for what I said above as it is first hand experience I had and what I saw was expereinced by other working in our team. Those that thought the Chinese were good were those on their payroll.

Rhino horn thieves fooled by replicas in UK heist

Fake rhino horns, anyone? That's all thieves who broke into a British museum have to show after a misguided robbery.

 

The thieves were seeking valuable rhino horns that can be sold in illicit markets for their purported aphrodisiac and medicinal use, but they left with worthless replicas instead.

 

Officials at the Natural History Museum at Tring had replaced the real horns with replicas because of a recent surge in rhino horn thefts at museums, galleries and auction houses throughout Britain and continental Europe.

 

Police believe organised crime gangs using mainly smash-and-grab techniques are behind the rash of rhino horn thefts.

 

"We have been made aware of approximately 20 thefts of rhino horn from museums and auctions houses across the UK and Europe in the past six months," said Ian Lawson, a Metropolitan Police detective specialising in arts and antiques.

 

"Additionally we have been made aware of incidents in the UK where premises that have rhino horn on display have been subject to hostile reconnaissance," he said, advising museums to consider removing authentic rhino horns from public viewing.

 

Rising demand for the horns and a crackdown on the illegal trade of them have made rhino horns extremely valuable. U.K. officials say the real horns sought by the thieves Saturday would have been worth about 240,000 pounds (NZ$465,000) on the open market.

 

The horns are now twice as valuable as gold, police said. They are often used in powdered form by Asians or other people who believe they can cure serious diseases or boost sexual performance, claims that are strongly denied by rhino conservation activists.

 

Nothing else was taken from the Natural History Museum at Tring during the break-in between 4am and 5am Saturday (4-5pm Saturday, NZ time). The thieves apparently used a large hammer to remove the bogus horns from the two rhinos' heads.

 

The museum, located 48 kilometres northwest of London in the county of Hertfordshire, remained closed while police investigated and museum workers repaired display cases. It planned to reopen Sunday.

 

A museum spokeswoman who asked not to be identified because of security concerns said the replicas, made of resin, were put in place three months ago as a precaution.

 

"Just looking at the quantity and spread of thefts since February shows that this is a real and serious threat to museums with rhino horns," she said

Had dinner with a guy who represents a group who consults govt.'s and conservation bodies in the protection of their wildlife and what he had to say about control has changed my view on this topic forever. It was purely by chance that he made it. He was supposed to be stuck in Botswana but transport came through at the last minute.

 

Corruption, pirates, ivory trade and black market were topics relating to the 'darkest' parts of this continent, but in his words, nothing compared to the lack of control found here in SA.

 

2008: 83 Rhinos killed

2010: 333!

 

SA has the most advanced poaching teams being funded internationally and as you might fear, in some cases being coordinated from inside sources, people tasked with protecting them! Rhinos, in some instances are being killed inside translocation camps on the same night they arrive. How do poachers know when a Rhino arrives if translocation is a secret project? Just one case would be enough proof that there is a leak from inside, but alas, it is being proven on a regular basis. Our Govt. is just not proactive.. Other Govt.'s have realized the affect on tourism and "are pretty damn serious about it." In SA the prize for poaching is bigger than the penalty. 8 years for poaching with suspended sentences and BAIL? C'mon SA!
