1.) Don't panic on the first part of the swim. What you are experiencing is normal

2.) When you get out the swim chances are you will approach your bike from another angle as when you exited after parking it. In the confusion after the swim I have found myself looking for my bike even having made a mental note of where it was. Get some physical beacon or marker or something that will help you locate your bike from the entry side of T1, after the swim. Same thing for T2, although I have found my orientation generally better with T2

3.) Don't start your run too fast. Force yourself to slow down until 1-2 km's in

4.) Enjoy

Good advice. A unique colorful towel helps.

Also, for T1 if the water is cold I find it helpful to kick more aggressively the last 25m of the swim to get some blood into the legs for the bike.

For T2, I cycle high cadence the last couple of meters to get my legs ready for running.

Drink beer afterwards - you deserve it!

If you swim like me, this is not a problem.. it is easy to find your bike when it is the only one left in the transition

I think wetsuits should be allowed. Germiston was very cold. How much can water heat up in one week? In anycase it seems like a few showers over the weekend.

I loooove my wetsuit, even if it is only 600m

I agree! Part of the tri fun is all the "essential" gear that goes with it...

What do you think I should wear a wetsuit or not? Its my first TRI race.

Will it be faster wit the wetsuit or without taking into account the transition ?

That depends on how good a swimmer you are. The better you can swim, the less you will need the wetsuit. 95% of the time, you'd be faster with the wetsuit. It takes at worst 30 seconds to take it off but the time spent breaststroking (haha) and doggy paddling could be saved by swimming slow freestyle with the wetsuit keeping you afloat.

a wetsuit = about 10 sec's per 100m so if you lucky you will gain about 1 min in a sprint race and then you loose almost most on it in T1 getting the wetsuit off, in longer races it makes a big difference, in a sprint race you shouldnt be swimming more than 15 minutes if you are i would rather invest in a swim coach to improve your stroke swim stroke than spend it on a wetsuit
