I see a lot of guys upgrading the standard Giant P-XC2 29" rims to other brands. Why is this? I have had no problems with my rims and don't think they are much heavier than a lot of sub R5k brands. The only issue I have found has been that I seem to have a problem getting tires to seat on the rim (tubeless conversion). Is this possibly the reason for the upgrade? How can I improve the seating on the rim? If I flat I cannot inflate with a bomb, which means putting in a tube for roadside repairs.

I suspect that most of them upgrade the entire wheel, not just the rim.

However, the rim is problematic with tubeless valves. The inside profile and large valve hole makes it impossible to get a reliable seal using Stans or similar valves.

For this reason alone I'll fit other rims. The hubs and spokes are fine though. The front hub is actually rather nice.

I have these wheels and used a ghetto tjoopless with insulation tape till recently .... no problem inflating with RK's. They did start to lose air after a while (the insulation tape starts to 'shrink') so I have now done it with the 'new' rubber tjoopless strips, not sure who makes them ......
