Hi,

Ill be moving to Stellenbosch this coming weekend and would like to know if there is a cycling club in the area? I do not really know the routes in the area, how safe it is etc.

If not, are there any group rides which are organised in the area over weekends and possibly during the week as well?

PS - I am mostly referring to Road Biking.

Thanx!

I don't know of many groups starting in Stellies but there are a few rides from the Durbanville area (Durbanville Area Roadies - here in the hub). There are a few bike shops you can try contact - BMT on Dorp Str or Flandria.

There are bound to be loads of rides happening over the Dec period. I have a new bike to break in after I build her on the 19th Dec.

Awesome Thank you! Just joined the FB group so lets see what comes up.

Any routes you guys can suggest that are "safe" to cycle alone? Is Polkadraai safe for cycling?

Polkadraai is safe - don't go towards R45 or past Kayamandi alone - heard / read of lots of bike jackings past there the past year. I missed one by like 5 minutes last year while riding alone. The guy was almost jacked while riding with a friend.

I have ridden past there again since, alone, and I have no issues with it. Just be vigilant, stick to the middle of the lane if no cars.

Most of the roads leading out of Stellenbosch are safe. However, as the other posts suggest, try not to pass Kayamandi during times when there is little traffic on the road. Polka Draai is safe, and from there you may join Bottelary [probably the road with the highest volume of bicycles in the Western Cape]. At the end of Bottelary, you can either go left on the R304 towards Joostenberg, or straight across the intersection onto Kromme Rhee or right onto the R44 back towards Stellenbosch. A great road to try out is from Stellenbosch along the R44 towards Gordons Bay and then the coastal road that runs all the way to Kleinmond. Depending on how long you want to make your ride, the out-and-back ride can be as long as 140km.
