Close competition between top cyclists expected at Die Burger Cycle Tour 2011

Press Release - 2 December 2011

(Cape Town, 30 November 2011) Some of the biggest names in South African cycling can be seen in action this weekend at Die Burger Cycle Tour in Stellenbosch.

Daikin-Gu team captain Moolman Welgemoed will be riding, out to defend his 2010 title: “It’s going to be a tough competition against the pro riders, but it’s exactly this competitiveness that makes the race such an important event on the cycling calendar.” Welgemoed will be joined by teammate David Garrett and will have to contend with the likes of Anton Wynand, Jaco Venter and Herman Fouche.

Swedish cycling sensation Jennie Stenerhag will aim to win her fifth consecutive Die Burger Cycle Tour title this year. Stenerhag, who lives in South Africa for six months of every year and calls Stellenbosch her second home, has dominated the event since its inception in 2007. Stenerhag will, however, have to ward off a strong challenge from local cycling legends Cathy Carstens and Maroesjka Matthee, who came in second and third place respectively in 2010.

This year also marks the first time that Die Burger Cycle Tour has a novice programme, and a number of novice cyclists will be competing in the 44km race to secure their place in next year’s Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour. First-time cyclist Bendelene van Rooy said she joined the novice programme after a friend introduced her to the sport by means of a spinning class. “I really enjoy cycling with other people and look forward to taking part in my first Cycle Tour.”

Some well-known faces will also be in action at the race, including COPE leader Mosiua Lekota, who will be joined by Terry Burrel (77) one of the oldest participants at this year’s race.

With temperatures expected to reach 29 degrees Celsius on Sunday, race doctor Basil Bonner has warned that riders ensure they have enough liquids with them at all times. “It’s going to be warm, so riders are encouraged to keep a steady pace and ensure they hydrate sufficiently.”

The race starts and finishes in front of Stellenbosch High School in Jannusch Street and offers riders two routes: the challenging 92km and the more scenic 44km.

Entries have closed and no late entries will be accepted. There will be substitution entries available at registration. For more information, please visit www.dieburgercycletour.co.za
