right... school me on rear derailures.... currently have FSA cranks 39-44-54. An old LX rear derailure and an 11-34 cassette.... we ar,e not racing snakes on the tandem and would like an easy gear at the rear. we were using a 11-28 with a 44-58 upfront and it was a killer on the up hills.... my lady could not pedal the ratio and i could hardly handle all the pedaling... SO...

do road derailures shift up at a 34T? i read somewhere that, for eg, the shimano 105 can only shift up to a 28? would i be doing well if i kept the MTB derailure set up or would changing be advised.... ?

For your purpose of "lazy" Tandemming a LX long cage derraileur will be quite sufficient. It does the same job as so called "road" derraileurs.
