I think its a bigger problem with how seedings are done. A few years back I managed a ridiculously fast time at the Bakwena, with the result that I was almost always in the A group (which was not always the best idea). In these circumstances (i.e. if you KNOW that you really shouldn't be riding with the big dogs in the A group) I think it's simply common courtesy to the big dogs to drop back a group. Obviously, however, you always want to be in the best group you can be ...

If the seedings are done properly (and seeding indices calculated properly, which wasn't the case with me after that Bakwena), you shouldn't feel the need to drop back a group.

I think you've hit the nail on the head... "IF the seedings are done properly."

IMO, the seeding system currently in use has a few flaws, and I've expressed my opinions on the forum a few times.

Don't worry - I haven't seen that many people who drop back - will see on the day how I feel  - come marshal the start one year and you'll see it's more than just a few  - it could be that they want to ride with friends, woke up late, can't read, etc., etc.

This race is one of my favorates... good to hear

The practice of using a single best race from the past year leads to most of the problems I'd say. A single 'best' seeding of 14 odd hardly qualifies me to ride with the A bunch although that is where I'm generally seeded. Dropping back to B leads to a more enjoyable ride, although the experience can be nerve wrecking to say the least.

geraldm24, do you know/can you say in what order will the VC/Elite Ladies/A/B bunches be seeded?

The start order has been approved, but I'll post this on Wednesday

All I can say for now is that the Elite ladies will have their own race without any interference from other groups.

I wasn't going to enter but after a poor performance at Ride 4 Sight, I decided to enter. I last did this race in 2008. Can't remember much only that we started and finished at Carnival City and that the route was easier (shorter as well) than Ride 4 Sight.

What is the time diff between your finishing time for the New Fast One time for the Carnival race?

The average speeds are about the same for most groups

 Somebody spoke to Roy? This looks a lot like what he mentioned, something like "We won't mind if the ladies start at 6am"!

I'm pretty sure the ladies won't mind to have their own race without interference from the Open/Seeded groups. Doubt VA/VB will sit on the wheels of the ladies. So let us hope the ladies teams actually pitch and not save their legs for SAs

the ladies have been asking for their own race for many years, but the SA Team selectors have insisted the ladies ride with the Vets to improve their standard of racing, and getting used to bigger bunches. Had we been allowed to start them on their own, they would've started at 06:10 ever since we increased the Elite's distance to 134Km (2010).

45 minute gap? Why so?

The Elites & U23 ride 134Km, which incorporates riding part of the course twice.

To give the ladies a chance to have their own race, they start 10 minutes after the Elites which gives them enough time to finish ahead of the men.

The Vets start when the Elites turn left off the 103Km route to start their extra loop, and will slot in behind the Elites at the 21.5Km mark about 10 minutes later. Every other group starts like normal, after the Vets, and each group will finish within a few minutes of each other from just after 09:00 until the last person cross the line at about 14:00.

Fair enough. Thanks for the answer.
