I recently purchased a Giant TCR road bike from my local bike shop. Whilst the salesman was explaining everything to me he informed me that the group set was Shimano Ultegra. Indeed, when looking it looked like all parts where Ultegra. However, the other day i took the back wheel off to clean the cassette properly, only to find it was a Shimano 105 cassette. Is this standard practice? Should i be upset? I feel like i was mis lead in what i was buying...but being fairly new to the sport i am not sure.

I'm not too clued up on road bikes, but often on MTBs it is standard practice to have certain parts a "model behind" on the groupset.

ie. if the bike has XT rear derailleur is might have an XT cassette, chain and front derailleur, but it is common for those parts to be SLX. Some bikes even do it with shifters. SRAM X9 rear derailleur, but X7 front derailleur and shifters

Many thanks. It sounds like it was a rookie error not to know exactly what all the parts were, but I am comforted that I haven't been ripped-off. The shop is excellent so glad to hear that they did not mis-lead me.

You misunderstand. The 10S stands for 10 speed and is printed on the spacers beween the cogs. The model of the cassette is found on the lockring on the outside of the smallest cog. eg CS6600 for an Ultegra cassette

Shifters Shimano Ultegra

Front Derailleur Shimano Ultegra

Rear Derailleur Shimano Ultegra

Brakes Shimano Ultegra

Brake Levers Shimano Ultegra

Cassette Shimano 105 11-28, 10-Speed

Chain Shimano 105

Crankset Shimano Ultegra, 34/50

Bottom Bracket Shimano BB71, Press Fit
