Hi All

I need some help. I recently bought a Mongoose Ritual Dirt-Hi. It currently has gears however I want to convert it to single speed. How easy would it be and what would I need?

Thanks

Dead simple dude! I had my old giant brass converted to single speed. you can buy single speed chain tensioners that fit onto your frame where the hanger for the rear deraileur fits.

then its a case of selecting a gear ratio you like, mounting the neccessary gear and then shimming it correctly so that the rear-wheel gear runs in line with the front. you then need to trim your chain to the right length and then set the tension using the tensioner.

as far as i recall my chain tensioner was R.180 and labour was also not much. cost R.350 in total to convert to single speed. tho in retrospect i am pretty sure i could have done all of it myself with some thought.

If you have horizontal drop-out you don't need a chain tensioner. You take up the slack in the chain by shifting the rear axle in the horizontal drop outs. Most bikes either have a bolt system (to push the axle backwards) OR a chain tug (which pulls the rear axle).

WRT to setting up the rear wheel you can either buy an aftermarket conversion kit OR you can make your own spacers (just Google it there are heaps of options)

I've find you want a gear ratio of just over 2 (so 26 up front & 12 on the back). I'm currently running 22/12 and I spin out way too easy, but it's okay for the riding I've been doing.
