I've got my first mtb race coming up.

 

I'm curious as to what one needs to take with while riding races ranging between 40-50kms?

Obviously fluids are vital, but is that all that i'd need?

Will I need to take those energy sachets etc?

 

Just curious as to if I need to take some kind of substance to eat.

Take a gel or two, but go with the mindset of not having them. Only use it when you start seeing your great great great grandfather having a dice with you.

 

Ok spares wise

 

1 x Multi-tool with chain breaker

1 x SRAM quicklink

1 x Spare tube in sock

1 x Crowbar tyre lever

1 x Plug kit if you are running tubeless

2 x CO2 bombs + 1 x adapter

2 x Cable ties

1 x Roll of electric tape

1 x Mini bottle of lube

 

Waterpoints will have chow...at least bananas, some of the better ones will have bars and jelly babies and chelsea buns, so don't take food

Don't take anything that you have not trained on. If you are not used to Gu's or the stuff they hand out at the water points, you are asking for trouble.

 

I take the following for nutrition:

- 2 x small ziplock bags with my race fuel in

- 1 x energy bar (same type I train on)

- 1 bottle with race fuel, to be re-filled at the water points

- a 1lt camelback

 

Spares:

same as above, but I take a small leatherman and my celphone too. I also pack my rain jacket if the weather looks at all dodgy, which is most times during the Cape Winter.

 

Also note that often water points run out of food and sometimes they run out of water and coke/energy drinks too. So make sure you have about 500ml reserve when you get to a water point.

I am horrified by some of the advice you got!!!! Your body has enough fuel in its petrol tank to last you for about 2 hours. Should your activity require you to continue at race pace for longer than that, you should replace as much as possible of whatever you use. Remember you can only replace about 50% of what your body consumes. That is why you should pre-hydrate properly, meaning you should take very specifically formulated supplement that will by-pass the natural hurdles of your digestive system (liver and stomach)and be absorbed quickly about 30minutes before the start. Stick to formulations that are natural with as little as possible anti-caking and preservatives, and no-no to cane sugars and sweeteners and especially caffeine. Should you only be busy for about 2 hours, only take water and make sure you get something for recovery afterwards - dairy is a fantastic "whole food" that contains virtually the whole matrix (like yogisip).
