My mom has just had her shoulder rebuilt - at 73. It was done by Dr. Barrow in Morningside - we did the research - he's one of the best. She was 6 weeks in a sling so you are in for a bit of a long haul - you'll even have to sleep in the thing, and apparrently it's one of the more painful operations you can have. She's just coming right now, but importantly, the Dr. did an awesome job - so I would recommend you try and get an opinion from him.

Which Dr. Barrow? The whole family of boys and dad are orthopedic surgeons working out of the same practice. And yes, I spoke to a number of people who recommended them.

Dr Andrew Barrow just did my wrist. He also fixed AB de Villiers.

If i am not mistaken Breckon and Barrow work out the same consulting office. I might be mistaken though.

Speak to anyone who has done any motocross and you'll hear how many times they have seperated both shoulders....

The problem with the shoulder joint is that it's the most mobile of all the joints on our body. Your seperation is a grade of how severe the loss of stability to the shoulder. The operation will look to get some stability back. Your recovery will be based on how effective the healing process will be. You will determine that by how much rest and appropriate rehab you give to the affected area and its supporting muscular system.

Be a little patient to start off and try not to have a specific date you aim to be back riding, but evaluate how the rehab is progressing and how the shoulder feels as it strengthens post the op again. Rather use that as your gauge. You will have far more to lose than gain if you re-injure and have to go through the whole process again! Good luck.

I have only been to the Sunninghill practice. Not sure about Morningside.

I have managed to do my left ac joint 3 times and my right one twice. Best course of action I found every time was rest and physio. It is a seriouslt annoying injury though, as soon as you think it is better you will do something and take a few steps back.

I was advised against the opp and to be honest am very gratefull for that. Shoulders are far from 100% but dont have pain and can do everything I need them to so they can just stay how they are for now!!!

Goodluck with the recovery...

Oh and next time break the collar bone it is much less complicated and quicker to recover from. Atleast thats the advice I always got from my doc
