You also might find that when you join a club that there will be someone with an old stable K1 like the Manta lying about in their yards doing nothing which they would be begging you to make use of. It is not unheard of to have an old Manta changing hands from beginner to beginner for generations until it gets written off against a tree or a rock in the rappids.

You're right. And some clubs also hold annual auctions of old boats. I know that Dabs have one every year right about this time (September). They invite people to bring their old/surplus boats down to the club, and they also auction off any boats where the owner hasn't paid his subs and has abandoned his boat in the racks.

Tombeej have you done the fish and the Dusi. The vrou and myself are training for our 3 rd fish together in a K2

Ja I've done pretty much all the big races, except Dusi. That's coz the whole reason I took up canoeing in the first place was because of a series of injuries I picked up from pushing too hard in running & cycling in the late '90's that forced me out of those sports (glad to finally be back). So with the 40-odd km's of running that happens in the Dusi I knew my leg wouldn't hold up to that. Best result in the Fish was 7th K1 in 2008 I think. Won a few regional river races and lots of top 5's and top 10's too. I was also chairman of one of the Gauteng clubs for a time.

I also did quite a bit of surfski, including 3 x world cups. The infamous 2007 Durban world cup is the one race burnt into my memory more than any other.

Ah, the year that it was quite big.

Hope to do it later on, but big downwinds still scare the crap out of me.

Nice man, wanted to actually start a thread on this the other day to find out if there any paddlers around here. I use to do a little surf ski paddling myself, nothing serious tho. Myself and wifey enjoy the paddling as we don't take it to seriously just for the fun of it. We proper slap chips paddlers. Looking forward to doing the fish in a months time

You can also try http://www.whitewatertraining.co.za/ Based in Parys - do regular trips down the Vaal. From what I know, the vaal is pretty poor most of the time but when the water's up! Watchout!

There are other rivers too of course. The Ash River (Clarens area) gets its water from the Lesotho Highlands water scheme so water is COLD but always pumping.

Also consider joining ESSA - www.explorationsociety.org/ - cool people and usually going on a trip somewhere. They have done some epic stuff too.
